Stage 7
To conclude the first weak of racing, the sprinters likely get a chance again on the longest stage of the race. Demare could celebrate his third stage win and looks to extend his lead in the points classification, but lots of sprinters want to succeed today.
Quaade opens today’s flurry of attacks. Mexican champ Prado and Kaczmarek counter.
Their endeavor is short-lived, so another group tries their luck. Prado is in there again, this time with Augustyn, Pruus and Oliveira.
Viviani and Okbamariam join them to form the break of the day. They quickly establish a two-minute lead.
With the first mountain sprint in sight, Augustyn accelerates.
But Prado outsprints him to take six points. Pruus is the only one who had any mountain points prior to today, but he doesn’t add any here.
Oliveira lost touch with his companions at that sprint and never makes it back. Incredibly, he would go on to crater completely, finish more than an hour behind the rest of the peloton and be the first rider to miss the time limit at this race. Generali still has Viviani in the group, at least. They have close to four minutes on the pack at the moment.
It’s a close call at the second KoM point, but Augustyn takes the five points ahead of Prado and Okbamariam. None of them are a threat to Vosekalns and his polkadots, of course.
The usual teams make the pace in the peloton and cut the lead of the break to about a minute and a half at the intermediate sprint (which goes by uncontested). EA Vesuvio could really use a moral boost after yesterday’s desaster for Schleck.
As is customary, attacks start in the group ahead once the peloton gets closer. Pruus is the first. All his companions would try as well, but they only prolong the inevitable.
They prolong it for a while, though, as the peloton only catches them with 10 kilometers to go. Puma lead the pack and close the gap.
Two trains emerge as we head into the final three kilometers. Demare is followed by Groenewegen, Van der Sanden, Liepins and Samolenkov on the left,
Van der Lijke has Stauff, Van Poppel, Soupe and Bouhanni behind him on the right.
Nelson is just outside the frame, trying to catch up. There’s a decently strong headwind, which might benefit riders who are a bit further behind on those trains.
Through the final corner, Reimer leads the group, Demare now in fourth position. The flamme rouge is just ahead!
Van der Lijke and Demare move to the front with Stauff and Groenewegen in their slipstream, respectively.
Van der Lijke went way too early and quickly fades, leaving a trio up front with Van Poppel and Soupe in pursuit.
Stauff can’t keep up, leaving Demare and Groenewegen side by side heading into the final 500 meters.
Samolenkov and Van der Sanden are currently the fastest, but they need to hurry up!
And they do, attacking the leading duo from both sides! Groenewegen has a slight edge over Demare, but will he hold off the other sprinters?
No! Samolenkov sprints past him, possibly towards a sensational stage win! Van der Sanden is already slowing down again, but Liepins is making up ground!
But he comes moments too late! Samolenkov can celebrate!
Van der Sanden finishes third ahead of Groenewegen and Demare while Van der Lijke just barely makes the Top 10. Today was not the day to be in the wind early.
Due to the high pace, a gap opened in the peloton and more than 100 riders ended up losing a whopping 2’37. Among them were Brambilla (GC 15th), Nesset (19th) and Iturria (20th) as well as Kangert (22nd), Smith (23rd), Laengen (24th) and Vervaeke (25th).
The biggest benefactor is Schleck, who moves up from 26th to 19th, although of course still more than six minutes behind the GC lead. Gazelle only have two riders in the first group and consequently they lose 2’37 in the teams classification on most of their rivals. With Frankiny and Novak also losing time, Lopez now has more than five minutes on his closest competitors in the young riders classification.
