Stage 7
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/P.jpg

To conclude the first weak of racing, the sprinters likely get a chance again on the longest stage of the race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare could celebrate his third stage win and looks to extend his lead in the points classification, but lots of sprinters want to succeed today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Quaade opens today’s flurry of attacks. Mexican champ pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Prado and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Kaczmarek counter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/02.jpg

Their endeavor is short-lived, so another group tries their luck. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Prado is in there again, this time with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Augustyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Oliveira.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Viviani and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Okbamariam join them to form the break of the day. They quickly establish a two-minute lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/05.jpg

With the first mountain sprint in sight, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Augustyn accelerates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/06.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Prado outsprints him to take six points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus is the only one who had any mountain points prior to today, but he doesn’t add any here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Oliveira lost touch with his companions at that sprint and never makes it back. Incredibly, he would go on to crater completely, finish more than an hour behind the rest of the peloton and be the first rider to miss the time limit at this race. Generali still has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Viviani in the group, at least. They have close to four minutes on the pack at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/08.jpg

It’s a close call at the second KoM point, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Augustyn takes the five points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Prado and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Okbamariam. None of them are a threat to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns and his polkadots, of course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/09.jpg

The usual teams make the pace in the peloton and cut the lead of the break to about a minute and a half at the intermediate sprint (which goes by uncontested). EA Vesuvio could really use a moral boost after yesterday’s desaster for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Schleck.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/10.jpg

As is customary, attacks start in the group ahead once the peloton gets closer. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus is the first. All his companions would try as well, but they only prolong the inevitable.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/12.jpg

They prolong it for a while, though, as the peloton only catches them with 10 kilometers to go. Puma lead the pack and close the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/13.jpg

Two trains emerge as we head into the final three kilometers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Liepins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov on the left,

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni behind him on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson is just outside the frame, trying to catch up. There’s a decently strong headwind, which might benefit riders who are a bit further behind on those trains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/14.jpg

Through the final corner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer leads the group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare now in fourth position. The flamme rouge is just ahead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare move to the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen in their slipstream, respectively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke went way too early and quickly fades, leaving a trio up front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe in pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff can’t keep up, leaving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen side by side heading into the final 500 meters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden are currently the fastest, but they need to hurry up!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/18.jpg

And they do, attacking the leading duo from both sides! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen has a slight edge over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare, but will he hold off the other sprinters?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/19.jpg

No! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov sprints past him, possibly towards a sensational stage win! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden is already slowing down again, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Liepins is making up ground!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/20.jpg

But he comes moments too late! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov can celebrate!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden finishes third ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke just barely makes the Top 10. Today was not the day to be in the wind early.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S7/22.jpg

Due to the high pace, a gap opened in the peloton and more than 100 riders ended up losing a whopping 2’37. Among them were pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla (GC 15th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Nesset (19th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Iturria (20th) as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kangert (22nd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Smith (23rd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Laengen (24th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Vervaeke (25th).

The biggest benefactor is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Schleck, who moves up from 26th to 19th, although of course still more than six minutes behind the GC lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Gazelle only have two riders in the first group and consequently they lose 2’37 in the teams classification on most of their rivals. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Frankiny and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Novak also losing time, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Lopez now has more than five minutes on his closest competitors in the young riders classification.
