Stage 3
Yesterday saw the first uphill action and the first small gaps among Contenders as the likes of Madrazo, Dombrowski and Sicard gained 20 seconds on some of their rivals. Meanwhile, Arnaud Demare won the stage and the yellow jersey.
The French is the big favorite today again, but we expect a classic sprint finish. There’s a small climb, two kilometers at up to seven percent, 17 kilometers from the finish line. Usually, that should not matter as much, but for guys like Ricki Nelson or Nacer Bouhanni, it could spell trouble if ridden too intensly.
Katrasnik is the first aggressor of the day and immediately, four men are in his wheel. They are Restrepo, Schönberger, Vanderpool and Arifin.
Pruus, Mottin and Kulimbetov want to join them but the peloton isn’t eager on an eight men breakaway so they quickly reel that trio back in.
No one else gives it a go and so we have this quintet out front together as they make their way to Nancy. There’s no mountain sprint today, Yzeiraj’s polkadot jersey is safe on his shoulders for at least one more day. Restrepo, Schönberger and Arifin are within 1’34 of the yellow jersey, their two companions have lost more time already.
The first two thirds of this stage went by without much to talk about. The advance of the group peaked at around five and a half minutes but is down to two and a half as they get to the intermediate sprint. Restrepo takes it ahead of Schönberger and Arifin; Katrasnik and Vanderpool show no interest at all.
In the peloton, two teams have emerged as the main work forces: EA Vesuvio for Van der Lijke and Aegon for Groenewegen. Especially the former disappointed on stage one and will look for redemption today.
With the peloton coming closer and closer, Schönberger launches the first attack from the group up front - presumably, it won’t be the last.
Indeed, after the Austrian is predictably caught, it’s Restrepo’s time to go.
As if for completion’s sake, the other three all attack together after the T-Mobile rider is caught again as well. The peloton is already in sight but with just under 30 kilometers to go, the gap is still over a minute and a half.
On the “climb” of the day, Vanderpool is the first one to get caught by the peloton, now led primarily by Puma. But it’s only a matter of time for the rest of them.
Restrepo and Katrasnik held out the longest, but a big effort by Dunne reels them in close to the summit of that small ascent with about 15 kilometers to go.
The peloton made it over the top in one piece with only two exceptions: Dumoulin and Frison fell behind after doing a lot of work earlier.
As we approach the final kilometers, EA Vesuvio and Puma do a good job of bringing their leaders in position. Demare still has three men ahead of him, Van der Lijke two including Reimer.
Almost all other sprinters are here as well. Van Poppel is directly behind the yellow jersey, Van der Sanden and Bouhanni shoulder to shoulder up next. Groenewegen is to their right with Soupe, green jersey Stauff and Samolenkov on his wheel while Nelson still has Quaade with him. Only Liepins is absent.
At 28 kilometers per hour, there’s some decently strong wind here in Nancy. And there’s a split in the peloton, possibly as a result of it. At first glance there seems to be no major contender in there, but we’re going to have to check that later. On the home stretch, the wind is going to come from the side.
Into the final corner, the EA Vesuvio train is in trouble and with it the riders behind it. Felline has charged to the front but he’s the only rider left ahead of Demare with just under two kilometers to go. Groenewegen, Van Poppel and Samolenkov are in prime position behind the French.
Demare accelerates even before the red kite! A bold move, but the yellow jersey gives him the confidence. Reimer tries to bring Van der Lijke back to the front on the right. Nelson got held up once more by a dropping leadout but isn’t completely out of it, just two or three positions behind Bouhanni.
The yellow jersey has a bit of a gap but his chasers are coming quickly. Van der Lijke is especially fast on the other side of the road, only just leaving his leadouts slipstream.
The finish line is getting closer and Demare has yet to slow down! And at this point, the guys behind him have been in the wind for a bit as well. Can he pull this off?
It’s going to be close! Van Poppel and Samolenkov still in second and third as Groenewegen and Van der Lijke can’t seem to find another gear to get past them.
Stauff and Soupe are fighting to maybe still crack the Top 5, but Bouhanni and Van der Sanden are just as fast.
Demare is just now starting to fade but the finish line is too close …
… and he takes it! Second win in a row, extending his lead in yellow and of course taking a massive step in the points classification as well. And that after a sprint from 1,2 kilometers out - what a demonstration from Arnaud Demare! Samolenkov beats Van Poppel to take second place, a strong result for the Russian.
Groenewegen and Van der Lijke might be a bit disappointed with fourth and fifth after their teams’ efforts today, but at least for Van der Lijke, it’s a small step up from stage one.
Soupe just barely edges out Stauff and finishes sixth. The German will still wear the green jersey tomorrow, but his deficit to Demare is already at 22 points.
Bouhanni, Reimer and Van der Sanden complete the Top 10, Nelson leads what you could call the pack over the line to finish eleventh, another disappointment. No time gaps today, though.
All jerseys stay on the same shoulders tomorrow as they were today, but Demare extends his lead in the GC by another 20 seconds.
