Stage 3
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/P.jpg

Yesterday saw the first uphill action and the first small gaps among Contenders as the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard gained 20 seconds on some of their rivals. Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Arnaud Demare won the stage and the yellow jersey.

The French is the big favorite today again, but we expect a classic sprint finish. There’s a small climb, two kilometers at up to seven percent, 17 kilometers from the finish line. Usually, that should not matter as much, but for guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Ricki Nelson or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Nacer Bouhanni, it could spell trouble if ridden too intensly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Katrasnik is the first aggressor of the day and immediately, four men are in his wheel. They are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Restrepo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schönberger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vanderpool and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Arifin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Kulimbetov want to join them but the peloton isn’t eager on an eight men breakaway so they quickly reel that trio back in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/03.jpg

No one else gives it a go and so we have this quintet out front together as they make their way to Nancy. There’s no mountain sprint today, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Yzeiraj’s polkadot jersey is safe on his shoulders for at least one more day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Restrepo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schönberger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Arifin are within 1’34 of the yellow jersey, their two companions have lost more time already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/05.jpg

The first two thirds of this stage went by without much to talk about. The advance of the group peaked at around five and a half minutes but is down to two and a half as they get to the intermediate sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Restrepo takes it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schönberger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Arifin; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Katrasnik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vanderpool show no interest at all.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/06.jpg

In the peloton, two teams have emerged as the main work forces: EA Vesuvio for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and Aegon for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen. Especially the former disappointed on stage one and will look for redemption today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/07.jpg

With the peloton coming closer and closer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schönberger launches the first attack from the group up front - presumably, it won’t be the last.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/08.jpg

Indeed, after the Austrian is predictably caught, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Restrepo’s time to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/09.jpg

As if for completion’s sake, the other three all attack together after the T-Mobile rider is caught again as well. The peloton is already in sight but with just under 30 kilometers to go, the gap is still over a minute and a half.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/11.jpg

On the “climb” of the day, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vanderpool is the first one to get caught by the peloton, now led primarily by Puma. But it’s only a matter of time for the rest of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Restrepo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Katrasnik held out the longest, but a big effort by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Dunne reels them in close to the summit of that small ascent with about 15 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/13.jpg

The peloton made it over the top in one piece with only two exceptions: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Dumoulin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Frison fell behind after doing a lot of work earlier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/15.jpg

As we approach the final kilometers, EA Vesuvio and Puma do a good job of bringing their leaders in position. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare still has three men ahead of him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke two including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer.

Almost all other sprinters are here as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel is directly behind the yellow jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni shoulder to shoulder up next. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen is to their right with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe, green jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov on his wheel while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson still has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Quaade with him. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Liepins is absent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/16.jpg

At 28 kilometers per hour, there’s some decently strong wind here in Nancy. And there’s a split in the peloton, possibly as a result of it. At first glance there seems to be no major contender in there, but we’re going to have to check that later. On the home stretch, the wind is going to come from the side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/17.jpg

Into the final corner, the EA Vesuvio train is in trouble and with it the riders behind it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Felline has charged to the front but he’s the only rider left ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare with just under two kilometers to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov are in prime position behind the French.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare accelerates even before the red kite! A bold move, but the yellow jersey gives him the confidence. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer tries to bring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke back to the front on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson got held up once more by a dropping leadout but isn’t completely out of it, just two or three positions behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/19.jpg

The yellow jersey has a bit of a gap but his chasers are coming quickly. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke is especially fast on the other side of the road, only just leaving his leadouts slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/20.jpg

The finish line is getting closer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare has yet to slow down! And at this point, the guys behind him have been in the wind for a bit as well. Can he pull this off?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/21.jpg

It’s going to be close! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov still in second and third as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke can’t seem to find another gear to get past them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe are fighting to maybe still crack the Top 5, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden are just as fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare is just now starting to fade but the finish line is too close …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/23.jpg

… and he takes it! Second win in a row, extending his lead in yellow and of course taking a massive step in the points classification as well. And that after a sprint from 1,2 kilometers out - what a demonstration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Arnaud Demare! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel to take second place, a strong result for the Russian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke might be a bit disappointed with fourth and fifth after their teams’ efforts today, but at least for Van der Lijke, it’s a small step up from stage one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S3/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe just barely edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff and finishes sixth. The German will still wear the green jersey tomorrow, but his deficit to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare is already at 22 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden complete the Top 10, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson leads what you could call the pack over the line to finish eleventh, another disappointment. No time gaps today, though.

All jerseys stay on the same shoulders tomorrow as they were today, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare extends his lead in the GC by another 20 seconds.
