From here we move directly east for a climb: Côte de Corlier in the Bugey hills a southern extension of the Jura mountains. Then heading south and shortly after passing the Rhône river near Lucey we got a short hill climb: Côte de Jongieux, just a starter as we are soon to climb the Hors catégorie Mont du Chat, actually a 14.5 km ascent with summit just 15 fast downhill km from the finish line. The official climb is only the last 8.8 km, average slopes of 10%.

Côte de Jongieux (cat.4) after 108.8 km
Mont du Chat (HC) after 129.6 km

Sunny 31°C, winds 4-6 km/h in the lowlands, almost no wind in the mountains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S5/03.jpg

Six riders attempt to start a pursuit pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Boswell, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Pernsteiner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Rucigaj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sergis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Ssabagwanya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Vorobev

They do not make it, instead it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Boswell, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Vorobev in pursuit and after about 18 km on the route they join the original breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S5/04.jpg

Up to this point the pack have been fronted by riders from Podium Ambition keeping the gap around one minute. The plan was to get a rider in the breakaway and eventually it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robov getting away from the pack. Soon also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Stoltz taking his chance to catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robov and form a pursuit.

Still with a fast peloton led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png De Souza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robov was reeled back in, about the time the original breakaway starts to climb Côte de Corlier, also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Stoltz back in the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Zakarin can’t keep of the high pace in the breakaway.

Gap 1’20” 4 km to the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S5/05.jpg

Getting closer and closer to the top the breakaway explodes, the pace is still very high in the pack, forcing the stronger rider in the breakaway to work hard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy leading with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo

At 15” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Boswell
At 46” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Vorobev
At 1’12” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Vermote

Now the only 6 riders in front of the pack at 1’19”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Sütterlin with a puncture in the pack.

After the KoM the peloton really push the gas pedal down, putting a lot of pressure on the breakaway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Anderberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Bouet burning a lot of energy.

With just a few km remaining in the Bugey hills, before the long downhill to the Rhône river valley, they have cut the gap to 56”, having visual contact with the three riders remaining from the breakaway. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo having more than 30”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska about to close the small gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S5/09.jpg

Just prior to the downhill pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Grashev attack from the pack

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S5/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Grashev gets contact with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek, again we have three riders forming the breakaway.

We get several attacks from the peloton on the long downhill. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Bongiorno, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Vlasov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Malori sitting like pearls on a string then the leading trio reach the valley.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek takes the points sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Grashev

At 9” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes crack and can’t keep up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Malori, he was later caught by the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Malori catch up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Bongiorno, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Vlasov, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo rejoins pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Grashev
