The stage starts in Villars-les-Dombes at town of about 5000 people located 32 km northeast of Lyon. From here we move directly east for a climb: Côte de Corlier in the Bugey hills a southern extension of the Jura mountains. Then heading south and shortly after passing the Rhône river near Lucey we got a short hill climb: Côte de Jongieux, just a starter as we are soon to climb the Hors catégorie Mont du Chat, actually a 14.5 km ascent with summit just 15 fast downhill km from the finish line. The official climb is only the last 8.8 km, average slopes of 10%.
Climbs:
Côte de Corlier (cat.3) after 47.1 km
Côte de Jongieux (cat.4) after 108.8 km
Mont du Chat (HC) after 129.6 km
Sunny 31°C, winds 4-6 km/h in the lowlands, almost no wind in the mountains.
The Race
Villars-les-Dombes
Zakarin opens the stage still with the eastern part of Villars-les-Dombes in the background. Boros in his slipstream.
Just a few km later Vermote bridge to the break.
Six riders attempt to start a pursuit Boswell, Pernsteiner, Rucigaj, Sergis, Ssabagwanya and Vorobev
They do not make it, instead it is Boswell, Jaramillo, Koshevoy, Riesebeek and Vorobev in pursuit and after about 18 km on the route they join the original breakaway.
Up to this point the pack have been fronted by riders from Podium Ambition keeping the gap around one minute. The plan was to get a rider in the breakaway and eventually it is Robov getting away from the pack. Soon also Stoltz taking his chance to catch Robov and form a pursuit.
Still with a fast peloton led by De Souza, Robov was reeled back in, about the time the original breakaway starts to climb Côte de Corlier, also Stoltz back in the pack.
Zakarin can’t keep of the high pace in the breakaway.
Gap 1’20” 4 km to the top.
Zakarin struggling at Côte de Corlier
Getting closer and closer to the top the breakaway explodes, the pace is still very high in the pack, forcing the stronger rider in the breakaway to work hard.
Koshevoy leading with Riesebeek and Jaramillo
At 15” Boswell
At 46” Vorobev
At 1’12” Vermote
Now the only 6 riders in front of the pack at 1’19”
2.3 km to the top, 100 km to the finish line
The leading trio
Jaramillo attack from 1.8 km, dropping everyone winning the KoM seemingly with ease, 47” later Riesebeek 2nd in front of Koshevoy
Côte de Corlier 8.4 km 5.0%
When the peloton passes Côte de Corlier, the caps are:
Jaramillo alone in front
At 49” Koshevoy, Riesebeek
At 1’26” Boswell, Vorobev
Peloton 183 riders at 2’00”
Sütterlin with a puncture in the pack.
After the KoM the peloton really push the gas pedal down, putting a lot of pressure on the breakaway, Anderberg, Baska, Bouet burning a lot of energy.
With just a few km remaining in the Bugey hills, before the long downhill to the Rhône river valley, they have cut the gap to 56”, having visual contact with the three riders remaining from the breakaway. Only Jaramillo having more than 30”
Baska about to close the small gap to Koshevoy
Just prior to the downhill Grashev attack from the pack
Grashev gets contact with Jaramillo and Riesebeek, again we have three riders forming the breakaway.
We get several attacks from the peloton on the long downhill. Bongiorno, Vlasov, Brenes, Malori sitting like pearls on a string then the leading trio reach the valley.
Riesebeek takes the points sprint in front of Grashev
At 9” Jaramillo
At 1’06” Bongiorno, Vlasov
At 1’21” Brenes, Malori
At 1’56” the pack 185 riders.
The point sprint in Culoz
Brenes crack and can’t keep up with Malori, he was later caught by the pack.
Malori catch up to Bongiorno, Vlasov, while Jaramillo rejoins Riesebeek and Grashev
We now got two group with three riders and front of the pack. Malori, Bongiorno and Vlasov at 36”, pack at 1’40”
Baska, Hnik and Soupe leading the Pack up to the cat.4 climb, distance 1’40”
On the climb itself Kung takes over.
The KoM goes to Jaramillo in front of Riesebeek and Grashev
Côte de Jongieux 3.2 km 5.5%
Rosskopf and Kung leading the pack to the top of the climb, with Gesink right behind.
The leading trio got 1’05, Malori alone in between, everyone else now reeled in.
The last two riders from the breakaway was caught on the false flat (3.2%) leading up to the official start of Mont du Chat, the pack led by Kung (161 riders) now leads the stage.
We have now passed the false flat and the official 8.8 km climb to Mont du Chat have begun.
With 6 km to the top we start to see the first gaps slowly forming, with 5.5 km left they are getting quite big.
43 riders in the first group:
Galta, Gesink, Guldhammer, Henao Montoya, Herklotz, Hirt, Kirsch, Kudus, Madrazo, Monsalve, Morton, Sicard, Smith, Talansky, Vasyliv, Velits, Wellens, Yates
Caught behind the first split, Aru, Berhane, Dekker and Ji
Caught behind the 2nd split, Bongiorno, Brenes, Novikov
5 km to the top, Ji and Berhane have grinded back now sitting in the rear end of the first group.
4.6 km to the top, Guldhammer accelerated at the front, at his wheel Sicard, Talansky, Gesink and Kudus
4.1 km to the top.
With his hard acceleration Guldhammer created an exclusive club of 17 riders, now leading the race with 49” to a pursuit of 35 riders.
Guldhammer have withdrawn from the front, the group is now led by Gesink
The order behind Gesink is: Gesink, Guldhammer, Kudus, Sicard, Talansky, Kirsch, Morton, Smith, Wellens, Velits, Herklotz, Vervaeke, Hirt, Yates, Madrazo, Galta and Vasyliv
4.0 km to the top.
Vasyliv can’t hold on to the group due to the intense pace set by Gesink
The 2nd group with the race leader Oliveira, Berhane, Henao Montoya, Ji and Monsalve also losing more time, now at 57”
3.6 km to the top, a gap has opened behind Gesink
Kudus leading the pursuit in front of Sicard, Guldhammer, Talansky, Smith, Morton, Kirsch, Wellens, Velits, Herklotz, Hirt, Yates, Vervaeke, Madrazo and Galta
2.0 km to the top
The very aggressive racing by Gesink have now spread the riders in smaller groups all over the mountain
At 12” the pursuit now led by Sicard with Guldhammer, Herklotz, Kudus, Morton, Smith, Talansky
At 40”
Wellens, Yates
At 1’08”
Kirsch
At 1’10” Galta, Hirt, Madrazo, Velits

At 2’34 Berhane, Boily, Brown, Henao Montoya, Laengen, Oliveira, Rosskopf, Vasyliv
At 2’56 19 riders with Monsalve
1.3 km to the top
Sicard close the gap to Gesink and as soon as he has done that, counter attack.
At first the best placed riders Kudus and Gesink at his wheel, but the acceleration from Sicard is extremely hard and they are both dropped soon after.
Sicard takes the KoM
Mont du Chat 8.8 km 10.0%
42” later Gesink passes the top in front of Kudus
1’10 behind Sicard, Guldhammer, Herklotz, Morton, Smith, Talansky

2’55 Yates
After 3’16 Madrazo takes the last KoM points.
Gesink 2nd and Kudus 3nd at Mont du Chat
15 very fast downhill km left from the top to the finish line.
Half way down Gesink and Kudus have cut just 2” of Sicard lead (40”)
Group Herklotz now 6” closer (1’04”)
No reason to drag this any further Sicard takes an impressive solo victory in Motte-Servolex.
Group Herklotz have been a lot faster than Gesink and Kudus on the last 7.5 km, but the duo just holds a slim gap, Gesink 2nd in front of Kudus 3rd
Smith 4th, Herklotz 5th, Guldhammer 6th, Talansky 7th and Morton 8th
All these riders lose 39”
Wellens coming in alone as 9th losing 2'20”
