Saint-Chamond was originally a fort protection an aqueduct supplying the Roman city of Lugdunum (Lyon). Historically an important town in the Loire region.
The route from Saint Chamond to Arlanc passes through Parc Naturel Régional Livradois-Forez and it is here we will climb the harder mountains, the early climb comes right after the start in Saint Chamond, but the last three KoM climbs can be seen as one climb without any actual descent, and as such is a 28 km long uphill section occupying the mid-section of the stage.
Another important note that is not to clear from the profile is that the last 450 meters are uphill hitting a maximum slope of 7.9% about 300 meters from the finish line.
All in all, the profile is quite unusual and despite the fact that it looks a lot like a sprinter stage the bookmakers got the climbers as favorites:
Climbs:
Côte de Croix Blanche (cat.3) after 7.4 km
Col de Verrières-en-Forez (cat.2) after 78.7 km
Col de Baracuchet (cat.3) after 88.8 km
Col de Supeyres (cat.4) after 98.7 km
The temperatures have dropped a little to 30°C still mostly sunny, but with almost no wind on the route it will still be a very hot ride.
The Race
Saint Chamond
Jungels opens the stage, at his wheel Manulang and KoM jersey holder David
A little further back Sütterlin and also Korsaeth laid some distance to the pack.
The early breakaway
Frison, Politt and Robov joins Korsaeth in his pursuit, but to no use they are all brought back.
In the end only the trio in front and Sütterlin build a lead over the pack, as the are getting closer to the top of Côte de Croix Blanche.
Sütterlin closing in
Manulang does the pace setting on the climb, more or less handing the KoM to David. That said David is clearly the stronger puncher in the group, the others may just have realized that it makes no sense to fight against him.
Côte de Croix Blanche 6.1 km, 4.9%
De Gendt lead the pack on must of the climb, passing the top at 4’32”. Sütterlin join the breakaway a few km after the top.
Madrazo was hit by a mechanical on the downhill losing 1’38”, he does not call for help and close the gap alone.
Madrazo getting a little help from a motorcyclists, getting back to the pack
Lecourt De Billot takes the lead of the peloton, lifting an amazing workload only with a little help from Hacecky, he cut the distance from 4’45 to 3’08 over the 50 km from the highest point on the mountain to the points sprint.
The Pack
David wins the points sprint in front of Jungels and Manulang
The point sprint in the outskirts of Montbrison
The breakaway enters the mountains with 1’48”, Manulang pulling the breakaway.
First weak climber Vanderaerden in front of the peloton, but soon the much stronger De Luna takes over.
ISA – Hexacta working in the pack
David wins the cat.2 in front of Jungels and Manulang, cementing his KoM lead.
Vermote attack from the pack to claim the last two points, the pack is at 1’40” passing the KoM
Col de Verrières-en-Forez, 9.4 km 4.8%
De Luna let go of the front, leaving the pursuit to Evonik – ELKO’s Stoltz and Liepins, somewhat weaker climbers they lose some time to the break.
With about 3 km to the KoM at Col de Baracuchet, rather bad climber Sütterlin struggles to keep up with the pace set by Manulang
Sütterlin in difficulties
ISA – Hexacta back in front of the pack as soon as the slopes get harder, this time Koshevoy pulling, a strong 2nd tier climber.
At the KoM Jungels fastest this time, David 2nd and Manulang 3rd, he lost a few seconds.
The pack passes at 1’08” it will be very hard for the breakaway with the pack this close and 74 km to the finish line.
Col de Baracuchet 5.2 km, 5.7%
Sütterlin was reeled in while Manulang was able to rejoin the breakaway.
David pulling on the flat section between the cat.3 and the final cat.4 climb, the trio was able to keep a gap open, and shares the final KoM, David in front of Jungels and Manulang
Col de Supeyres, 2.3 km at 7.0%
Overnight KoM leaderboard
The pack passes the top at 1’02” Dzamastagic pulling the peloton
Evonik - ELKO seemingly believe that the stage may end in a sprint finish
The breakaway rebuilds some distance, with 45 km left back at 1’48”. Several T-Mobile riders working at the front of the pack, but not too hard just controlling the gap.
But then first Kalaba and later Gebremedhin up the pace and the gap was quickly reduced to 1’06 with 30 km left.
David with a last desperate acceleration, getting him nowhere, and the breakaway was over with 24 km to the line.
The break was swallowed by the pack
As soon as the breakaway is over Evonik – ELKO takes the front with the entire team, Besides that it is mainly the GC riders gathering close to the front with a few domestics, Sicard right behind the train, Gesink, Madrazo, Herklotz, Kudus, Morton, Velits, Wellens and Hirt, all within the first 20 riders behind the EvoniK train.
15 km left, 12 km downhill then 3 km mainly flat
First under the red kit, at the left side the Evonik – ELKO’s train led by Dzamastagic fronting a line with Stoltz, Riesebeek, Bekmanis, Liepins and Van Stayen
At the middle of the road, Sepulveda leading out Boily with Monsalve clued.
At the left side between the mentioned trains, in this order Wellens, Gesink, Madrazo, Hirt
At the right rear of Monsalve, Sicard, Velits Talansky, Yates
Morton and Galta and the rear end of the trains but connected.
Under the red kite
Dzamastagic had no intension of waiting for team leader Van Stayen, something that may seem a bit odd considering that Van Stayen is a brilliant sprinter / puncher very well suited for a profile like this one. We don’t know what the tactic was, and it looking fine right now.
Sepulveda in 2nd position, then Van Stayen, Stoltz, Boily, Riesebeek, Yates, Monsalve, Sicard and Hirt.
Behind Hirt a lot of rider on a line that may or may not get a stage result here.
400 meters left for Dzamastagic he is at a 4.5% slope
200 meters left for Dzamastagic still leading with some margin to Sepulveda in 2nd position, both past the hardest slopes.
Van Stayen, Boily, Yates and Monsalve all at the hard 7.9% slope but quite close.
It next row Sicard, Wellens, Mas, Madrazo, Smith, Talansky, Velits and Gesink, also struggling with 7.9% just a meter further back.
Dzamastagic now past the hard slopes
Dzamastagic wins the stage in Arlanc
Teammate Van Stayen 2nd securing his team a one-two stage result
Boily 3rd, Yates 4th, Monsalve 5th, Sicard 6th, Mas 7th, Smith 8th, Velits 9th and Talansky round of top 10
