Criterium du Dauphine Libere - Stage 2
Tamijo
Criterium du Dauphine Libere

Stage 2: Saint Chamond – Arlanc 166.6 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S2/00.jpg

Saint-Chamond was originally a fort protection an aqueduct supplying the Roman city of Lugdunum (Lyon). Historically an important town in the Loire region.

The route from Saint Chamond to Arlanc passes through Parc Naturel Régional Livradois-Forez and it is here we will climb the harder mountains, the early climb comes right after the start in Saint Chamond, but the last three KoM climbs can be seen as one climb without any actual descent, and as such is a 28 km long uphill section occupying the mid-section of the stage.

Another important note that is not to clear from the profile is that the last 450 meters are uphill hitting a maximum slope of 7.9% about 300 meters from the finish line.
All in all, the profile is quite unusual and despite the fact that it looks a lot like a sprinter stage the bookmakers got the climbers as favorites:

Climbs:
Côte de Croix Blanche (cat.3) after 7.4 km
Col de Verrières-en-Forez (cat.2) after 78.7 km
Col de Baracuchet (cat.3) after 88.8 km
Col de Supeyres (cat.4) after 98.7 km

The temperatures have dropped a little to 30°C still mostly sunny, but with almost no wind on the route it will still be a very hot ride.

The Race

Saint Chamond

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Jungels opens the stage, at his wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Manulang and KoM jersey holder pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png David

A little further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Sütterlin and also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Korsaeth laid some distance to the pack.

The early breakaway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Frison, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Politt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robov joins pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Korsaeth in his pursuit, but to no use they are all brought back.

In the end only the trio in front and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Sütterlin build a lead over the pack, as the are getting closer to the top of Côte de Croix Blanche.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Manulang does the pace setting on the climb, more or less handing the KoM to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png David. That said David is clearly the stronger puncher in the group, the others may just have realized that it makes no sense to fight against him.

Côte de Croix Blanche 6.1 km, 4.9%

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S2/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png De Gendt lead the pack on must of the climb, passing the top at 4’32”. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Sütterlin join the breakaway a few km after the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo was hit by a mechanical on the downhill losing 1’38”, he does not call for help and close the gap alone.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lecourt De Billot takes the lead of the peloton, lifting an amazing workload only with a little help from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Hacecky, he cut the distance from 4’45 to 3’08 over the 50 km from the highest point on the mountain to the points sprint.

The Pack

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png David wins the points sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Jungels and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Manulang

The breakaway enters the mountains with 1’48”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Manulang pulling the breakaway.
First weak climber pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Vanderaerden in front of the peloton, but soon the much stronger pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png De Luna takes over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png De Luna let go of the front, leaving the pursuit to Evonik – ELKO’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Stoltz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Liepins, somewhat weaker climbers they lose some time to the break.

With about 3 km to the KoM at Col de Baracuchet, rather bad climber pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Sütterlin struggles to keep up with the pace set by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Manulang

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S2/11.jpg

ISA – Hexacta back in front of the pack as soon as the slopes get harder, this time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy pulling, a strong 2nd tier climber.

At the KoM pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Jungels fastest this time, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png David 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Manulang 3rd, he lost a few seconds.

The pack passes at 1’08” it will be very hard for the breakaway with the pack this close and 74 km to the finish line.

Col de Baracuchet 5.2 km, 5.7%

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S2/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Sütterlin was reeled in while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Manulang was able to rejoin the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png David pulling on the flat section between the cat.3 and the final cat.4 climb, the trio was able to keep a gap open, and shares the final KoM, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png David in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Jungels and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Manulang

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S2/15.jpg

The breakaway rebuilds some distance, with 45 km left back at 1’48”. Several pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png T-Mobile riders working at the front of the pack, but not too hard just controlling the gap.

But then first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kalaba and later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gebremedhin up the pace and the gap was quickly reduced to 1’06 with 30 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png David with a last desperate acceleration, getting him nowhere, and the breakaway was over with 24 km to the line.

The break was swallowed by the pack

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S2/16.jpg

As soon as the breakaway is over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Evonik – ELKO takes the front with the entire team, Besides that it is mainly the GC riders gathering close to the front with a few domestics, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard right behind the train, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Morton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Hirt, all within the first 20 riders behind the EvoniK train.

15 km left, 12 km downhill then 3 km mainly flat

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S2/17.jpg

First under the red kit, at the left side the Evonik – ELKO’s train led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic fronting a line with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Stoltz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Bekmanis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Liepins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen

At the middle of the road, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Boily with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Monsalve clued.

At the left side between the mentioned trains, in this order pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Hirt

Under the red kite

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S2/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic had no intension of waiting for team leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen, something that may seem a bit odd considering that Van Stayen is a brilliant sprinter / puncher very well suited for a profile like this one. We don’t know what the tactic was, and it looking fine right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda in 2nd position, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Stoltz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Boily, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Hirt.

Behind Hirt a lot of rider on a line that may or may not get a stage result here.

400 meters left for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic he is at a 4.5% slope

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Dauphine/S2/19.jpg

200 meters left for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic still leading with some margin to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda in 2nd position, both past the hardest slopes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Boily, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Monsalve all at the hard 7.9% slope but quite close.
It next row pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Mas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Smith, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Talansky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Velits and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink, also struggling with 7.9% just a meter further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Dzamastagic now past the hard slopes
