Welcome back to Bellinzona for the second-a-last stage, and also the last time trial of the race. It is considerably shorter than the first one, 32 compared to 52 kilometer, but should nevertheless cause the gaps to grow larger. Phinney is unlikely to give up the leader's jersey and should be one of the favorites for the stage, but the order behind him could be shaken up ahead of the final mountain stage.
Van Winden with the first serious time at 40'02.
He is 31 seconds faster than current second place Sterbini and 48 seconds faster than third place and first starter Predatsch.
Vlatos won the first time trial but falls short on Van Winden at every checkpoint, 6 at the first, 15 at the second and 17 at the finish line.
No surprising result for Hamza, provisional fifth but at some distance from Van Winden with a lot of riders still to come.
Quaade overtakes Scully, and goes to provisional third place at 23 seconds.
Fifth place to Atkins, + 43.
Zmorka is nine seconds faster than Van Winden after the first split, and continues to go faster. He is the first rider to go under 40 minutes: 39'28 and 34 seconds faster than the Dutchman.
Provisional eighth place to Sagan, before Koishi took that place.
Hansen will take provisional sixth at 1'10.
Tension until the finish line for Fiedler. One second up on Zmorka at split one, one second down on Zmorka at split two. At the finish line it is six seconds... up on Zmorka. New leader!
Postlberger loses 1'14 over Fiedler today, virtual seventh place.
Nechita virtual ninth, same time as Hansen.
Hepburn's split times suggest he will battle against Van Winden for third. At the finish line the difference is only one second, in the Dutchman's favor. The Australian has to settle for provisional fourth.
Weinstein doing surprisingly well, seventh place so far at 1'07.
At the start we watch the departure of Würtz, currently ranked 68th at twelve minutes. Not that he'll overcome that but he will gain some places today. He ends up losing 29 seconds to Fiedler, which is third place at the moment.
Quintana and Machado with decent times, not more than two minutes behind Fiedler. They still have to make up a lot of time tomorrow, but it could have looked worse.
Another rider going up today is Kunshin, who has a very good day and posts the seventh time, a minute behind Fiedler.
Ganna wants to get the white jersey back, for which he needs to gain one minute on Geoghegan Hart. He finishes in 40'50.
We start the top twenty with Rosch, who will likely end up outside the top twenty as both Kunshin and Ganna will pass him.
Konig was nineteenth but is set to move up places. He sets the sixth time, 56 seconds from the lead, in a very good performance.
Keinath was four seconds ahead of him in the GC, but at split one he has already lost that lead. His time is not that bad, + 1'16, but he likely expected more.
Both men gain a place on Kruijswijk who does not have the best of days: + 1'44.
But Kruijswijk does gain a place on Shalunov, who has to give up some places as well. He will remain in the top twenty though, which is still a good result for him.
Tvetcov up next, and has a thirty-second buffer to Konig. He loses eight seconds on the first section, seven more on the second and nine on the final. A total of 24 seconds, which means he holds to his position on by six seconds.
The only GC rider who dared to attack this race, Martin, has to limit his loss today. He loses 1'39 to Fiedler, and drops behind Tvetcov and Konig but stays ahead of Keinath. His time is only a few seconds faster than Quintana and Machado, whereas the difference was two minutes on the first time trial.
Danacik is off to a good result, seventh on split one, seventh on split two and passing Vlatos to take virtual sixth place, + 49.
The most surprising rider in the top twenty, Mager, is not a good time trialist, already a minute down on split one. His time in the top of the GC is over after today, but it gives him room to appear in a breakaway again.
Geoghegan Hart has the task to defend white against Ganna. He finishes in 41'15, losing 25 seconds to Ganna, and thus remains in white. He does lose places in the GC to Tvetcov and Danacik and is tied with Konig.
We enter the top ten with Dyball and some cows. He is roughly equal pace with Danacik, the best GC rider so far, and ends up one second faster than the Czech. He defends his top ten and is allowed to look up.
Teammate Haig does even better though, ten seconds faster and fourth so far on the stage, only 38 seconds off Fiedler who still leads.
Goos had eight second on Haig, but that lead is gone at the halfway point. He does make the virtual stage top ten but has to concede a place to Haig in the GC.
Ioannidis is two minutes slower than Fiedler, which costs him a place to Haig, Goos and Dyball in the GC. He stays ahead of Danacik so heads into the final stage as tenth in the general classification.
Vangstad managed to hold on to a promising GC position in the mountain stages, and today he shows why he deserves to be this high. The same intermediate times as Haig, but does lose two seconds to the Australian in the final section. He is the virtual GC leader with five riders to finish.
Passing split two is Keizer, who is two seconds off Zmorka which means he's only one second off Fiedler. Following him to the finish line, he cannot follow the same pace increase but places himself between the German and the Ukrainian at four seconds.
Brändle loses half a minute to Keizer, which costs him a position in the GC despite placing fifth.
Cattaneo also has to fear the Dutchman. He is allowed to lose sixteen seconds, but after the second split he has given up all but one of those. It should not be surprising he didn't manage to defend the position against Keizer despite setting the fourth time of the day. Keizer takes the final podium spot by six seconds over the Italian.
Two riders remaining, first Kritskiy who has a minute advantage over the riders who started previously. At checkpoint one he concedes three seconds to Fiedler, but becomes a contender for the stage win at checkpoint two when he sets the fastest time there. On the finish line he stops the clock at 39'16, six seconds under the time set by Fiedler.
But the last man starting is GC leader and former Time Trial World Champion Phinney. He is obviously expected to beat Kritskiy, and has along the way smashed his split times. He finishes in 38'52, the winning time.
The last rider to start has the fastest time: Taylor Phinney wins by 24 seconds over Kritskiy and 30 over Fiedler. Keizer is fourth at 34 seconds, with Zmorka fifth at 36. Cattaneo sixth at nearly a minute, with the top ten completed by Würtz, Brändle, Haig and Van Winden. Vlatos, the winner of the first time trial, ends up in only seventeenth place.
The top two places in the GC are also the top two of today's stage: Phinney extending his lead over Kritskiy to 1'40. Keizer moves up from fifth to third at 3'06, Cattaneo and Brändle each losing a place and now at 3'12 and 3'33 respectively. Vangstad remains sixth but now at four minutes, Haig jumping over Goos to seventh, both men at nearly five minutes. Dyball ninth, Ioannidis dropping from seventh to tenth. The places eleventh to twentieth are shaken up a bit, with Ganna and Kunshin entering the top twenty at the expense of Mager and Rosch.
Phinney also continuing his on-again, off-again relationship with the red points jersey, reclaiming it from Lander. Vosekalns has the pink mountains jersey all but mathematically secured, and Geoghegan Hart fought off Ganna for white young rider jersey. Grieg takes the teams classification from Puma.
