Tour of Vancouver - Stage 3
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/profile.jpg

Yesterday's flat stages ended in a sprint, but not an usual one. This stage is longer and even flatter, so another sprint is very likely. Hopefully it will go down a bit more organized than yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/01.jpg

Five riders break away:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Zaccanti
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Erdenebat
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Pogacar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Al Murawwi

Four riders from yesterday, and Al Murawwi. His teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Robert is at 40 seconds trying to join, but even though he is an accomplished time trialist, he does not make it. The break will be five.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/02.jpg

Or will it? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Mostov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Clarke attempt to bridge the gap on a bridge a bit later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/03.jpg

The answer to that was no, but now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Braico tries with the help of some motorcycles. I'll pretend I didn't see that. He has to make up 1'30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/04.jpg

Glanbia want their rider in the break no matter what, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png English attacks as well. He has to make up two minutes as some teams had taken the speed out of the peloton already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/05.jpg

Braico makes it, English doesn't. The definitive tally is six. Their lead would top at 3'30, but they were in control by the peloton the whole race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/06.jpg

Two sprints in short succession, first an intermediate followed by a mountain sprint. Zaccanti wins the former ahead Pogacar of Meyer. Al Murawwi and Erdenebat didn't sprint for this and wouldn't play a role in the next one either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/07.jpg

Meyer showing why he deserves the polka dot jersey, being first to reach the top. The other points went to Braico and Zaccanti. Al Murawwi and Erdenebat would rejoin the other after the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/08.jpg

As the sun shines bright, the peloton has closed in to a minute with thirty kilometer to go. Meyer, Zaccanti and Braico attack to prolong their lead, the other three give up and will be cauhgt. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Dzervus punctured at an unfortunate time, and would not return to the peloton to help his team in the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/09.jpg

Meyer gives it another go a few kilometer later, leaving Braico and Zaccanti without answer. The gap has extended back up to 1'20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/10.jpg

But not even Meyer can hold off a chasing peloton. Equinor, Zalgiris and NENT have riders at the front for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Carsi or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Manarelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Awang or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Nepomnyachsniy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Perera or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Van Poppel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/11.jpg

Five k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Kangangi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Le Bon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Coronel lead. The sprinters are bunched up around tenth position, with the GC riders behind them in case of another, but unlikely split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/12.jpg

As we turn into the city centre, Zalgris has the best sprint train despite Dzervus' absence: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Kruopis - Nepomnyachsniy - Awang. A mixed NENT/Equinor train trying to come alongside: Coronel - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Mehr-Wenige - Kangangi - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Stash - Van Poppel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Rovny and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Manarelli trying kinda boxed out of the latter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/13.jpg

The other sprint trains are beaten by the Zalgris train, Nepomnyachsniy launches Awang into the final kilometer:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Nepomnyachsniy

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Yamamotopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Van Poppel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png L. Keoughpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Manarelli
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Kamberaj
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cisse
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Suryadipcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Carsi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Sobotapcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Kluge

A split occurring behind the sprint, riders behind will not challenge for the win. This includes Perera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Fonseca, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png J. Keough and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Szalontay.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/14.jpg

Van Poppel is strong, coming alongside Awang. Manarelli also with nice speed going through the middle, but Carsi is not on his wheel. The Turkish champion is on the next row with Yamamoto and Kluge. Keough boxed in behind Von Hoff.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/15.jpg

Awang falls away, Manarelli takes the lead with 500 meters to go but Carsi is coming with Yamamoto, Von Hoff and green L. Keough on his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/16.jpg

And here comes L. Keough, once he finds the space between Carsi and Manarelli he is released. Von Hoff going around the other side of the Brazilian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/17.jpg

Two from two for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Luke Keough, three from three for Azteca. One team dominating the race so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S3/18.jpg

Photo finish for second place but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Manarelli just about holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff. Kamberaj from far behind to fourth, Carsi fifth, Yamamoto sixth, Cisse seventh. Van Poppel and Awang looked promising but finish eighth and tenth, with Kluge completing the top ten.

The differences in the GC remain the same as we head into the mountains tomorrow, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Eastman in yellow. Keough's double stage win puts him in green ahead of Eastman, the jersey he got to wear today is now truly his. Meyer extended his lead in the mountains classification, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Borisavljevic in white and Azteca leading the teams classification.
