Tour of Vancouver - Stage 2
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/profile.jpg

The second stage is a short, nine-lap flat stage, although it does contain a hill. We'll see how the race goes and if it impacts the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/01.jpg

The initial breakaway consists of:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Zaccanti
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Pogacar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Betilson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Erdenebat

Four would become six, as
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Mostov

are seen attacking in the background, and would make it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/02.jpg

Even though we climb this category three hill nine times, only three ascents count for the mountains classification. Meyer wins the first one ahead of Pogacar and Betilson. 90 kilometer to go, their lead is up to 2'30. Zaccanti is the highest ranked rider in the break at 1'59.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/03.jpg

Sprints will be confusing today, with the start, finish and intermediate line all within 500 meters. The front line on your screen is the intermediate sprint, which is important for now. The first one is won by Meyer ahead of Zaccanti and Erdenebat. The peloton control the gap at 2'30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/04.jpg

Same order on the second categorized ascent as the first time: Meyer Pogacar Betilson. 65 to go, gap down to two minutes, the peloton wants to head for a sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/05.jpg

Halfway through the stage, 50 to go. The riders can see each other on the other side of the highway as they enter and exit the city. Euskaltel, Zalgiris, NENT and Equinor all with riders at the front, also teams with sprinters. Azteca not really involved despite having both the race leader (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Eastman) and a stage favorite (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png L. Keough)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/06.jpg

Meyer wins the third and final mountain sprint, Pogacar second again with Zaccanti third this time. With his 18 points today, he scored more than Eastman yesterday (16) and will take the polka dot jersey. The gap still around two minutes with 40 to go.

Meyer completes the sprint sweep by winning the final intermediate sprint as well, ahead of Zaccanti and Pogacar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/07.jpg

A split in the peloton occurred over the climb, about 30 riders in front. There are no riders dangerous for the GC, mostly sprinters. We can spot L. Keough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Fonseca, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cisse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Yamamoto, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Sobota, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Suryadi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Awang, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Perera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Carsi there, only a few sprinters missing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/08.jpg

Mostov dropped from the leaders and is caught by the sprinters group. They have 50 seconds over group yellow jersey with 30 kilometer to go, E1 leading over the peloton by 1'30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/09.jpg

The peloton restoring the order with two laps to go, first catching a large chunk of the sprinters and now the final ten escapees. Two laps to go, so two more ascents of the hill to cause chaos. The arrival itself is also technical, with two left turns in the final kilometer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/10.jpg

Betilson attacks E1 at 20 kilometer to go, when gap is 45 seconds. Meyer follows, Zaccanti and Pogacar stay in the saddle. Erdenebat had lost touch with the group on the last lap and has been caught as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/11.jpg

Zaccanti and Pogacar rejoin the duo, after which Betilson drops on the second-a-last ascent. The gap has gone up to a minute, but the peloton can see them in the distance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/12.jpg

One lap, 12 kilometer and the gap is about 25 seconds. There is the front peloton coming out of the corner...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/13.jpg

...but in the middle a sizable gap occurred. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Signorini (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Burmann (10th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Diaz (15th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Malacarne (20th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Zoidl (21st), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Stetina (22nd) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Camier (24th) from the GC top 25 are behind, together with sprinters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png J. Keough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Szalontay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Kamberaj.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/14.jpg

Leaders caught at 7 to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Faiers (3rd GC) leading the peloton himself. Three kilometer to the foot of the climb, the second peloton closing in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/15.jpg

Faiers leads the group over the climb, Perera and L. Keough on his wheel. Some other sprinters following behind them, as well as Eastman in case of another split. The second peloton had closed the gap right at the foot but that is no guaranteed they are back at the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/16.jpg

Actually, a pretty distinct gap occurring after thirteenth place, right behind Eastman:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Faiers
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Perera
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Smukulis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Van Poppel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png L. Keough
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Suryadi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cisse
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Fonseca
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Carsi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Yamamoto
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Cheyne
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Eastman

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Kiserlovski trying to bridge the gap, an enormous task with only two kilometer to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/17.jpg

Entering the last kilometer with Faiers still leading, forming a sprint train with Van Poppel for Perera. Eastman in fourth position helping Keough. Kiserlovski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Pinot bridged the gap, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Kluge between the two groups going for a massive sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/18.jpg

Coming out of the second-a-last turn, the sprinters have launched. Keough leading ahead of Suryadi and Von Hoff. NENT screwed up the leadout, Van Poppel sprinting on his own. Faiers dropping back but Eastman holding on quite well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/19.jpg

Keough leads into the final turn, but takes a rather wide line. This might give the opportunity to Suryadi, Von Hoff or the fast approaching Van Poppel to dive past on the inside. Eastman fifth alongside Cisse. Fonseca, Yamamoto and Carsi behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/20.jpg

Quite confusing but it's the first line which counts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Luke Keough wins the second sprint under strange circumstances, but he was there when it mattered.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff finishes second, but a round of applause for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Eastman sprinting to third. Eight bonus seconds for the current GC leader, other than the gap he will get over some of his rivals. He also hangs on to the green points jersey, which will be worn by teammate Keough tomorrow, and Azteca takes the teams classification because they had three riders in the front group compared to only one for CYBEX.

Fonseca finishes fourth, Van Poppel fifth, Suryadi sixth, Yamamoto seventh, Cisse eighth, Carsi ninth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/22.jpg

Pinot, Kiserlovski and Faiers stick with the front group and only lose that eight seconds to Eastman. Faiers moves from third to second, passing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Ratiy, while Kiserlovski and Pinot move from sixth and seventh to third and fourth at the expense of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Medvedev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Manfredi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Vancouver/S2/23.jpg

Kluge was just caught by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Valls, who wins the peloton sprint ahead of mainly the other GC contenders instead of the sprinters. The damage is limited to 48 seconds, with no further splits behind except a few small ones at the back. Ratiy is now fifth in the GC at 1'06, Medvedev sixth, Manfredi seventh and the order resuming from there. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Borisavljevic stays in white as none of the fifteen escapees was eligible for that classification
