The second mountain stage of the race. We climb the Furkapass and the Klausenpass, two climbs of the highest category, but after the latter there is a long flat section to the arrival city of Gommiswald. Inside Gommiswald we climb again for a short punch towards the finish line. Major changes are unlikely, unless havoc occurs on the first two climbs.
A large morning breakaway for today, fourteen riders taking on the adventure:
Meijers
Pantano Gomez
Madouas
Ganna
Miller
Mosca
Carpenter
Kaislavuo
Teuns
Costa
Pichon
Vosekalns
Sterbini
Vysna
A few strong climbers in the group. Ganna best in the GC at 4'15. Mosca and Vosekalns with 10 points in the mountains classification, but with 46 on offer today anyone can take the jersey.
The breakaway reaches the foot of the Furkapass with a 4'20 lead, meaning Ganna could wear yellow over his white. Aegon, Farfetch, Tinkoff, Isostar with riders at front due to high GC placings, but no Grieg yet.
Sterbini turns out to be the worst climber of the fourteen, having to give way three kilometer before the top. Their lead has gone up to seven minutes in the meantime.
Vosekalns with a last-ditch effort to get past Miller and Vysna to win the mountain sprint. With this result, Vosekalns becomes virtual leader with 30 points against 28 from current leader Bridges. The rest of the points go to Mosca, Madouas, Teuns, Pichon, Costa, Pantano Gomez, Carpenter and Kaislavuo. Ganna and Meijers were slightly distanced at the top, but returned on downhill. Sterbini at 2'30, peloton closing in to 6'30 with a few riders already dropped and having to fear for the time limit.
An uncontested sprint after the downhill is won by Pantano Gomez.
The peloton caught Sterbini at the foot of the Klausenpass, and is only four minutes behind the leaders. Aegon will lead the climb with Van der Hoorn, Van Hooydonck and Vesely, together with Speirs and Goss from Indosat. Wonder how long these sprinters will last.
Halfway up the mountain Meijers gives up, leaving only 12 leaders. They manage an equal pace with the peloton, still four minutes. Isostar, Campari and Bennelong have taken over control with Bol, Kadri and Schultz.
Twelve becomes nine as Ganna, Pichon and Kaislavuo cannot follow the pace with six kilometer to go. Meijers has already been caught by the peloton, which has closed in to three minutes.
Another one down, Mosca switches to his own pace for the final three kilometer. The peloton meanwhile is also thinning out, Weinstein (GC 23rd) the highest ranked victim.
The strengths out front become clear when we get close to the top. Vosekalns, Miller, Carpenter and Pantano Gomez attack, Vysna and Teuns tried to follow but couldn't, Madouas and Costa didn't even try and hope to return on the downhill.
Vosekalns is first over the top, putting him even firmer in the pink jersey at the end of the stage. Carpenter right behind him, with a fifteen second gap to Pantano Gomez and Miller. A minute to Vysna, another 25 seconds to Teuns, and another 40 to Costa, Madouas and Mosca. Ganna, Pichon and Kaislavuo caught by the peloton. 70 kilometer to go.
The peloton took it easy or the front really accelerated, as the gap is up to 5 minutes at the sprint. Kebede and Guerreiro lead the group and take the remaining points. 74 riders make it over the top, Würtz and Weinstein the only riders from the top 25 not present.
The front five reunite after downhill, Pantano Gomez gifted another intermediate sprint. Mosca, Costa, Madouas and Teuns united and at 40 seconds, the peloton at three minutes.
Drama for Majka as a mechanical failure means he drops away from the peloton, losing a possibly promising GC position.
Unrest amongst the front, Pantano Gomez and Vosekalns set off with sixteen kilometer remaining, Miller trying to follow. The four chasers haven't got any closer, and the peloton is not keen on catching them either with the gap not coming down fast.
Vosekalns reaches the final ten kilometer with a lead of twenty seconds over the four chasers, aiming for his second, consecutive stage win. Teuns has been dropped from the second group. The peloton is three minutes behind the leader, with Majka two minutes behind them and Würtz even further.
Carpenter, Miller and Pantano Gomez return to the Latvian at six kilometer from the line, but Vysna cannot rejoin. With the gap to the second group over a minute, it will likely be between these four for the stage win.
Miller wants to start the final climb with a head start, attacking under the banner signaling five kilometer to go.
But the trio returns as we head onto the final three-kilometer climb. Gap to Vysna is 1'30, no chance he'll be able to get back unless they start looking at each other.
Vosekalns and Miller wasted energy by attacking, Carpenter and Pantano Gomez ride away with the American setting the pace.
Carpenter still leading under the flag, but can Pantano Gomez pass him?
Robin Carpenter is too strong for the Colombian, he wins the sixth stage! Pantano Gomez did everything he could but has to settle for second place.
Miller beats Vosekalns for third place. The Latvian won't leave empty-handed though, as he leads the mountains classification by 22 points over Bridges and 24 over Miller.
The peloton increased the pace and caught all remaining former breakaway riders, finishing only 1'21 behind Carpenter. There were no attacks though, Kritskiy sprints to fifth ahead of Phinney, Haig, Keinath, Martin and Guerreiro. A few more splits did occur at the back, including Ganna at the wrong side. Majka finished at five minutes, Würtz at eight. Everyone made the time limit though, so we still have the same 187 riders who started the race.
No changes in the GC top ten, Phinney remaining leader but also taking the points jersey from Lander. Geoghegan Hart moves to eleventh with Ganna and Würtz losing time, and is the new owner of the white jersey by a minute over Ganna. Puma leads the teams classification by twelve seconds over Grieg.
