Gansingen host the depart of the fifth stage. The riders head to Gstaad in an intermediate stage, only one true climb which is shortly before the finish. An ideal stage for attackers you'd say.
So it should not be surprising that we see riders attacking straight away:
Nechita
De Bondt
Weinstein
Schachmann
On the Staffelegg climb, the group grows to ten, adding:
Ariesen
Bridges
Lavery
Sakalou
Rodriguez
Vosekalns
Evonik represented with three riders is surely a sign of a well-thought plan. Bridges with the goal of becoming King of the Mountains, he only needs a singular point. Weinstein highest ranked in the GC, 23rd at 5'19.
Bridges' first target fails, as he finished fourth on the Staffelegg with the top three getting points. Lavery won from Rodriguez and Weinstein. The only other climb is ten kilometer before the finish. The lead over the peloton at the top is four minutes, Weinstein virtually in white and close to yellow.
Aegon, Campari, Vesuvio and Aker prevent Weinstein from becoming virtual race leader, keeping the gap under 4'30 which is already back to 3 mid-stage. Maybe the favorites do want to battle for the stage win.
Fast forward to 50 kilometer remaining on the slowly ascending profile, uncontested intermediate sprint won by Sakalou ahead of Lavery and Nechita. The gap is two minutes, T-Mobile and Bennelong joining the chase.
Bridges needs to make it to the category two climb to get the mountains jersey, which is still thirty kilometer away and the peloton now only a minute behind. He thinks the best way to do this is by attacking.
At the sprint in Boltigen he is rejoined by De Bondt, Vosekalns, Lavery and Nechita. Weinstein still trying to stay ahead but the peloton is right behind him at only 40 seconds from the front. All the other members of the breakaway were caught. 25 to go, 15 to the top of the Saanenmöserstrasse.
The five actually manage to extend the gap back up to 1'20, as they start the climb proper. Lavery cannot keep up with the other four.
Mager attacks from the peloton at the foot of the climb, hoping he can catch the leading quartet. T-Mobile, Tinkoff and Grieg with the most riders at the front of the peloton.
Vosekalns is the best rider as he goes solo under the ten kilometer banner, one kilometer below the summit. Nechita and Bridges just about hanging on with the peloton closing in again, having already caught Mager, Lavery and De Bondt. Preidler setting a high pace with more riders struggling at the back.
The Latvian crosses the top with a fifty seconds lead, which he needs to maintain on the downhill to Gstaad. Bridges hangs on to second place, which brings him eight points and the lead in the mountains classification. He is caught by the peloton right after the line, with Würtz, Vesely (!) and Mavrikakis taking the remaining points. Once Preidler left the front the pace slowed down a bit, resulting in a large peloton of over 150 riders still together.
Vosekalns does not make any mistakes on the downhill, and even increases his lead slightly. Mavrikakis leads the peloton down ahead of the Gazelle trio of Janse van Rensburg, Karnulin and Konrad. Lander can be found near the front as contender for second place, Vesely having dropped back quite a bit after crossing the top in fourth.
No celebration on the line but the victory is his: Andris Vosekalns wins the fifth stage in Gstaad!
A minute later, Hansen wins the peloton sprint ahead of teammate and GC leader Phinney, who receives eight bonus seconds and thus extends his lead. If he ends up losing the race by four seconds or less, he can be angry at his teammate for stealing bonus seconds.
Lander sprints to fourth, which gives him the lead in the points classification by five points over Phinney. Würtz makes is three Grieg riders in the top five. The top ten is completed by Kadri, Konrad, Poljanski, Karnulin and Mavrikakis.
No changes in the top of the GC and youth classifications as almost the entire field finished together on this uneventful stage. Phinney with his bonus seconds now leading by 1'16 over Kritskiy and 2'16 over Cattaneo.
