Tour de Suisse - Stage 3

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/profile.jpg

We return back to Switzerland for the third stage, with the start in Flims and finish in Schwarzenbach. There are some smaller climbs in the beginning of the stage, but everything should kick off on the final, long, HC climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/01.jpg

The following eleven riders try to form the morning breakaway:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Mosca
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schönberger
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Paprstka
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Budenieks
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Gesbert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Lane
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Mager
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Fiorelli
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Postlberger (GC 8th, + 2'13)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Sagan (GC 9th, + 2'16)

Sagan appearing to drop back though.

Peloton at 1 minute with T-Mobile chasing, perhaps hoping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Restrepo can challenge at the upcoming category 3 climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/02.jpg

Their plan fails, and at the top of Lichtensteig the breakaway lead by three minutes. Fiorelli, Mager and Gesbert take the points. Only Postlberger already had points (10), so Restrepo (18) still leads, but with 20 points waiting at the finish line we likely see a new face in pink.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/03.jpg

Sagan the lone wolf today, four minutes behind the breakaway with 110 to go but also six minutes ahead of the peloton, meaning E1 is 10 minutes ahead. Tinkoff, Grieg, Isostar, Campari, Indosat, Aegon and Vesuvio all joining in on the chase, but the pace is not very high.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/04.jpg

Postlberger wins the intermediate sprint in Buchs ahead of Budenieks and Mosca. With the gap being nine minutes with 75 to go, he is the virtual leader by a long margin. Sagan still in between the two groups, but closer to the peloton than the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/05.jpg

The same three riders take the sprint points in Chur, only in the reverse order. The gap is down to 7'30, mainly thanks to the hard work of Indosat and Aegon. We've reached the foot of the final climb, which is 30 kilometer long. The climb can be split in two parts of ten kilometer, with a somewhat flat section in between.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/06.jpg

Sagan is finally caught by the Indosat train, even red jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss helping out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Phinney in tenth position, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Haig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Carthy behind him, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/07.jpg

About five kilometer into the climb, Postlberger has to let go of the break. He's virtually six minutes ahead of Phinney but that will come down rapidly. Mager the next best rider from the leaders at 9'34, but their lead over the peloton is only eight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/08.jpg

The first part is done. Paprstka dropped as well and is a minute behind, Postlberger at three and the peloton still at eight with Campari now coming to the front. The peloton is also starting to thin out, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Zmorka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Van Winden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Fiedler (GC 2nd, 3rd and 4th) already gone, as well as Sagan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/09.jpg

When the climb resumes, Mager and Sakalou separate themselves as best climbers in the group. The peloton, with still over 100 riders, is led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kebede, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Jung and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Thurau. Postlberger dropping further back towards the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/10.jpg

Schönberger rides the rest of the group back to our two escapees. Eight riders back together with a hefty lead over the peloton, the stage win looking unlikely to escape them with none of the favorites wanting to make a move as of yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/11.jpg

With seven kilometer to go the duo tries again, now with Mosca on their wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Gillett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Foliforov leading the peloton for Grieg and Tinkoff, but not as fast as they are not even gaining much on Postlberger. Gap E1 - peloton 7 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/12.jpg

The trio got about thirty seconds but this time it is Gesbert who brings them back with 3.5 kilometer to go. Three minutes to Paprstka, five to Postlberger and seven to the peloton with fresh blood in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Iturria.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/13.jpg

Budenieks is the next rider to struggle with the pace, and Mager also appears to be in trouble, perhaps a bit too eager to attack. Lane leads the group into the final two kilometer, with a sprint finish becoming ever more likely unless someone dares to attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/14.jpg

Finally some action from the peloton, as Martin attacks. He quickly passes Postlberger, who was about to be caught by the peloton. Phinney still in tenth position but not worrying, Martin is five minutes behind in the GC. Indosat (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol) and Isostar (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Augustyn) leading the peloton, they still have four kilometer to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/15.jpg

Heading back to the front, the stage win has become a sprint of seven. Lane, Sakalou and Mosca leading into the final kilometer with Mager having fought his way back to the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/16.jpg

Four riders have the most energy left, Lane ahead of Sakalou and Mosca ahead of Fiorelli. Looks to be Lane versus Mosca unless Sakalou or Fiorelli can get out of their slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/17.jpg

Mosca capitulates, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Patrick Lane holds on to win at the Schwarzenbach. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Fiorelli pass Mosca for the remaining podium positions.

Schönberger fifth, Gesbert sixth, Mager seventh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/18.jpg

Martin has edged out a lead of about 45 seconds and has a visual reference in Paprstka. Haig and Kritskiy having to lead the group themselves, other favorites in the places behind them including Phinney. All are waiting for the final sprint as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/19.jpg

Budenieks comes over the line in P8, 1'27 after Lane. With the 20 points he took here, Lane also leads the mountains classification by two points over Restrepo and Fiorelli.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/20.jpg

Phinney leading the peloton himself into the final kilometer, reducing the gap to Martin a bit. Still no attacks with the peloton still rather large, definitely no major differences today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/21.jpg

Martin holds off the peloton to finish ninth at 4'53, passing Paprstka who takes the final place inside the top ten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S3/22.jpg

Phinney wins the peloton sprint ahead of Haig, Kritskiy, Cattaneo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Konig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Keizer. They end up losing 22 seconds to Martin.

The group was thinned out a bit more, resulting in some changes in the GC top ten: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Phinney remains leader with Kritskiy inheriting second place at 1'08, and Cattaneo third at 2'08. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Brändle, Keizer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Vangstad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Goos, Haig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Dyball all finished in the peloton and form the new top ten. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Würtz drops to eleventh by losing three minutes, but does hold on to white by a second over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart. Mager and Martin the big movers to thirteenth and fifteenth.

Phinney also claims the lead in the points classification while his team Grieg - Maersk holds on the teams classification.
