Tour de Suisse - Stage 2
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/profile.jpg

We make an excursion to France for the stage two time trial. The riders start in Bonneval and finish in Chartres, 52 kilometer down the road. Some riders can get a good head start going into the mountains tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Predatsch finished last yesterday, so he is the first starter. His benchmark time is 1 hour, 10 minutes and 36 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/02.jpg

The fourth starter of the day is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Quaade, and he beats him by 31 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Sterbini ties Quaade at the first split but slowly edges out in front, going fastest by nine seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/04.jpg

But that is piece of cake for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vlatos, who takes two minutes shorter and posts a new best time of 1h07'55. A shame he lost nearly six minutes yesterday, otherwise he would have been a contender for yellow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Hamza with the second best time at splits two and three, and also provisional second at the finish line though losing 1'48.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Van Winden was part of yesterday's breakaway and did manage to finish in the peloton. He posts the second time at just over a minute, and becomes the virtual GC leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Ganna passes teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Madouas on his way to provisional seventh place. A good starting point if he wants to challenge for white.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/08.jpg

The Italian has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Sagan chasing after him, who is 28 seconds faster for virtual sixth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Ioannidis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Weinstein also enter the virtual top ten, tenth and seventh respectively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Atkins disappoints, only just making the virtual top ten at over three minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Hepburn came closest to Vlatos at the first checkpoint so far, losing 14 seconds. However, he appears to have started too fast as he continues to lose time over the remaining 40 kilometer, to drop all the way to ninth place at 2'50.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/11.jpg

Someone who also started a bit too hot is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Fiedler, who beat Vlatos by one second at split one but cannot continue that pace. He eventually falls behind Van Winden as well, but takes the last step on the virtual podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Hansen an outsider but cannot match the times at the front, losing three minutes today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Zmorka passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Krizek in the final kilometer, who started four places ahead of him. The Ukrainian had taken the fastest time at every intermediate, two seconds at the third, but Vlatos had a strong final section. The end verdict: 1h08'05, which is ten seconds slower than Vlatos. Second place, and the GC lead so far though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Vangstad not able to surprise, despite having the fifth time at the last checkpoint he drops to outside the top ten, twelfth to be precise at 2'55.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/15.jpg

Passing the halfway point is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Keinath, a GC rider who could use a good time trial. He's already two minutes down on Vlatos and it grows to become five, surely not the gains he was hoping for.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/16.jpg

Italian champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Cattaneo does a much better job. He loses 2'14 for provisional eighth place, but is best amongst the GC riders so far, with only a few left to start.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/17.jpg

Austrian champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Brändle finishing right after him at + 2'27, taking what is now the final spot in the top ten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Haig placing around 20th place on all splits, losing 3'41 to Vlatos and would finish 25th on the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Martin should not be too disappointed in only losing five minutes to Vlatos with a stage top forty, one of the GC contenders who had the most to lose today.

He performs much better than a pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Machado, who loses seven minutes, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler who finishes eleventh from bottom at sixteen minutes. For them, a good GC classification will become difficult.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/20.jpg

Twenty riders left to finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Goos up next and only just making the top stage twenty.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Keizer placed seventh on the first two splits but then dropped down the order a bit. He ends up eleventh at 2'30. Very disappointing from the Dutchman, as he falls behind Cattaneo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Phinney perhaps the prime favorite for the stage, and the halfway time check showed him 26 second ahead of Vlatos. At checkpoint three it was down to just three seconds and at the finish line it is six seconds, on the wrong side. Vlatos holds on to the hot seat but Phinney takes the race lead from Zmorka by four seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy as last GC contender to start. He lost a minute to Phinney, placing sixth on the stage but ahead of other GC contenders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/24.jpg

The last rider with a serious bet for the top five is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Würtz. He ends the stage 90 seconds behind Vlatos for seventh place, but does become the best young rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Postlberger scored ten bonus seconds at intermediate sprints yesterday, so has to finish within ten seconds of Phinney to take the jersey. That's an illusion of course, but the Austrian holds up quite well, finishing the stage in 14th at 2'29.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/Suisse/S2/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss is the last starter but not the last finisher as he overtook pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Vesely. His time in the yellow jersey will be limited to one day, but that was to be expected.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Panagiotis Vlatos spend all day in the hot seat, and no one managed to beat his time. He wins the second stage by six seconds over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Phinney, ten over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Zmorka and the rest at more than a minute. Van Winden fourth, Fiedler fifth, Kritskiy sixth, Würtz seventh, Hamza eighth, Sterbini ninth, Quaade tenth.

Since the Greek did not finish in the peloton yesterday, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Phinney takes the GC lead by four seconds over Zmorka and 57 over Van Winden. Fiedler fourth at 1'05 and Kritskiy now the American's main GC rival at 1'08. Würtz sixth and best young rider at 1'24, Cattaneo seventh at 2'08 with Postlberger, Sagan and Brändle completing the top ten. Keizer eleventh at 2'24.
