Welcome to the opening stage of Tour de Suisse. We start with a 160 kilometer long stage from Frauenfeld to Frauenfeld. We ride four laps around the city, including the category 3 Herdern climb. Nevertheless, we expect the sprinters to battle it out at the end.
Six riders in the breakaway:
Stork
Bridges
Van Winden
Postlberger
Ariesen
Restrepo
Three contenders for the mountain points on the first ascent of Herdern: Stork, Bridges and Restrepo. They cross the line in that order. Gap to the peloton is up to 3'30 with 140 kilometer to go.
All six riders sprint for first of three intermediate sprints in Nussbaumen. Bridges wins ahead of teammate Postlberger and Ariesen.
Pace control will be done by Aegon, Festina and Indosat today. The gap never got over four minutes.
Restrepo wins the second mountain sprint, ahead of Postlberger and Stork with Bridges in fourth. Restrepo and Stork now tied at 8 points, Bridges and Postlberger at 4.
Bridges - Restrepo - Postlberger at the second intermediate sprint. Their lead is down to three minutes with 70 kilometer to go, same teams still at the front. Salzmann punctured.
Close call but Restrepo wins the third KoM sprint ahead of Bridges and Stork, taking the lead in that classification. Van Winden and Ariesen not involved in these sprints.
A group in trouble with 50 to go, amongst whom Preidler, Vosekalns, Formolo and Pantano Gomez. The gap is not huge, but losing time on stage one is never a good thing to do.
Restrepo wins the final sprint ahead of Ariesen and Postlberger, with the gap now under two minutes to the first peloton of about 100 riders. The second peloton including the aforementioned riders at another minute with 25 to go.
Postlberger wins the final ascent of Herdern with a huge margin, the rest of the group almost caught by the peloton. Restrepo and Bridges take the remaining four and two points, which means Restrepo leads the mountains classification with 18 points, with Bridges, Postlberger and Stork tied for second at 10.
Bridges returning to Postlberger for a joint Podium Ambition lead. Stork and Ariesen hanging in between them and the peloton, who is back to completeness with a few exceptions, Vlatos most notably as he will not be able to take the race lead on tomorrow's time trial.
Ten kilometer for a duo time trial, the gap only 25 seconds. Konig, Salzmann after his earlier puncture, Keinath and Schachmann chasing.
Bridges and Postlberger had a nice cooperation but they are caught seven kilometer before the line. Sprint contenders Lander, Vesely, Goss and also Phinney amongst the first few positions.
One giant sprint train with three kilometer, everyone lining up behind Konig:
Goss
Vesely
Geoghegan Hart
Serebriakov
Petit
Lander
Van der Sanden
Janse van Rensburg
Scully
Van Heerden and Nizzolo too far back to play a role, the two Gazelle riders out of their element.
Under the flag and we have the unlikely sprint of Konig versus Janse van Rensburg. Goss lost the wheel of Konig and has been passed by Serebriakov. Vesely and Petit behind.
The duo is, of course, passed with 700 to go. Vesely leading slightly ahead of Serebriakov, Goss and Petit. Lander a bit further back with Scully and Van der Sanden.
The four leaders almost side-by-side, anyone of them can take the win. Scully and Lander with more speed but started too far back.
A clear winner in the end: Matthew Goss wins the first stage in Frauenfeld and takes the yellow jersey. Vesely coming in second, failing to win the opening stage three years in a row. Serebriakov third, Petit fourth ahead of Scully and Lander. Van der Sanden, Geoghegan Hart, Würtz and Kritskiy complete the top ten.
The red points jersey also belongs to Goss, with the pink mountains and white youth jersey on the shoulders of Restrepo. Gazelle leads the teams classification with their sprint armada.
