Hi again. It’s day 5 here in Japan and what a day we have in front. The decks have been shuffled by Mount Fuji yesterday, but everything should be settled today in another circuit stage.
The Kannomine climb dominates the profile with a total of 14 passes + a final longer ascent to help us define our GC winner. Krasnoperov isn’t a superb puncheur so it’s going to be interesting how he handles things today.
Serry
Wahyudi
Fouche
Initiate today’s hostilies and pass in that order the 1st KoM sprint of the day
They’ll be later joined by Niyonshuti and Battaglin
The Belgian is the best in the GC (21st at 2’37) and could be a threat if the break is not controlled with a tight leash. In normal circumstances he would be a GC candidate but he had a bad day yesterday and seems to have lost his team’s favouritism which turned to Costagli.
2nd KoM sprint:
1. Wahyudi
2. Battaglin
3. Niyonshuti
The gap is around 3’20 at this point.
Serry is the only one not interested in the KoM points. The rest of the group duels it out with intensity!
3rd KoM sprint:
1. Battaglin
2. Wahyudi
3. Niyonshuti
Wahyudi could have a chance at the polka dot jersey if he gathers points in the next sprint and things go well for him at the end. Unfortunately for him 10 points are on offer on the final climb.
The pack has not been sleeping. With 60km to go only about 60 riders remain there with Netia, ISA and ENI controlling things. The whole top 30 is still there though.
Wahyudi clinches the last of intermediate KoM sprints which gives him the provisional lead. Will it be enough?
The main group continues to shrink. It has only 30 riders with 36 km to go. Notable riders dropped are: Zaini, Roux, Caruso Calmejane, Bagot, Zoidl among others.
Unfortunately for Europcar Henao will soon lose contact as well.
The difference is cut back to under 2 min in the 3rd to last climb. Wahyudi understands that he has enough in the tank to try and go solo from now on and says goodbye to his former colleagues!
The main group is losing its cohesion with especially the yellow jersey being seen at the back. Is Krasnoperov starting to give in?
Up front Wahyudi is brought back, while Fouche loses touch with the rest. We’re about to face the penultimate uphill section and this time it is Niyonshuti accelerating. The yellow jersey group is now just 30’’ behind.
The African is caught as the climb unfolds, while this time it is Wahyudi being dropped.
The front trio manage to hold this 30’’ gap all the way up to the foot of the final climb, but Battaglin is fading.
Decisions are about to take place now, so it’s a good moment to review who’s around in the yellow jersey’s group:
Paulus, Choi, Pomoshnikov
Padun, Krasnoperov
Betancourt, Boily, Sepulveda, Ji
Venter, Grmay, Bennett, Houle
Schir, Schelling
De Vos, Faiers
Kuboki, Salcone, Costagli
Kwiatkowski, Bernas
Slagter, Ranaweera, Wahyudi
These men do not take advantage of the first part of the climb as we enter a bit of a lull. In the short descent that takes us to the continuation of the Kinnomine hill Niyonshuti and Serry manage to keep the lead but their margin has melted away. It’s only going up from now on. 5km to go!
And it is Slagter who pounces imediately creating a sizeable gap!
Alarms go off in the Xero rádios, with Houle starting to pull at the front for his leader Bennett!
Krasnoperov held is ground bravely to this point but is now losing contact. He only has 8’’ to Bennett and with 3km to go this could be it for the Ukrainian.
Bennett has been notified of this event and is now the one setting the pace at the front!
Slagter’s gap has stabilized around 30’’ as we approach the final kilometer. Bennett’s pace continues to eliminate riders from this group:
Xero tries to use their strength in numbers to keep the Dutch within reach
Rawaneera, De Vos and Betacourt losing contact
Krasnoperov explodes losing a minute already with 2km to go for him.
1.5km to the line. Kwiatkowski accelerates!
The Pole manages to close in on Slagter but he doesn’t get rid of the others. Namely Bennett and Ji don’t provide him much leeway. Pomoshnikov the best of the ENI riders.
Cracks are beginning to appear on this group as we close in on the final kilometer
Everyone seems spent at this point, but there’s still a 500m sprint to contest! Slagter is caught with this final turn of speed. Bennett and Ji seem to be the fastest with Pomoshnikov and Kwiat doing their best to not lose contact
Bennett seems to have the slightest of advantages…
But that’s better that anyone else. Bennett takes it on the line in a decisive victory which shall propel him to the top of the rankings!
Slagter holds on for a brave 2nd place, while Ji takes third. Pomoshnikov, Kwiatkowski and Choi all finish with the same time as the winner.
Behind them, Schelling and Faiers manage to keep their losses at just 22’’, while Venter is 9th at 59’’. Sepulveda closes the top 10 with a 1’12 time loss, along with Costagli, Padun, Ranaweera and Boily
Krasnoperov will be sad to know he has lost not only the yellow jersey, but also a final top 10 with a 3’51 total loss.
The final bit of sad news goes to Wahyudi, whom, despite his earlier efforts during the stage, sees the polka dot jersey lost to Bennett for a mere 2 points. At least he’ll get to borrow for the final stage tomorrow.
See you all there!
