Scandinavia Open Road Race - Stage 3
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/profile.jpg

The final stage in the Scandinavia Open Road Race, the general classification still pretty much open with 27 riders within a minute of leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Yates. The puncheurs did not gain as much time as they might have wanted yesterday, they have to today. The race features the same climb as the opening hillclimb, which the riders have to take 3.5 times, the last time only half.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Caruso attacks right from the start. He wants to defend his polka dot jersey, with a maximum of 29 points available today. He already has 32 points, so he only needs to defend against those who already have points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/02.jpg

He is joined by twelve others for a break of 13, the unlucky number:

Paulus the most dangerous rider in the GC at 1'18. Crucially for Caruso, no direct rivals for the mountain points in the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/03.jpg

Caruso takes the first five points of the day ahead of Paulus and Riesebeek. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Stuyven, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Brandao and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Laengen try to join the breakaway, Laengen then the highest ranked rider at 1'04.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/04.jpg

The sixteen fully reunite towards the intermediate sprint, also won by Caruso ahead of Gebremedhin and Paulus. The lead is three minutes with 130 to go, so Laengen can enjoy the virtual yellow jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/05.jpg

And Caruso also takes the next category three climb which brings him ever closer to the final victory. Laengen and Brandao with four and two points, Paulus and Gebremedhin with none. These five had a decent gap at the top but allowed the other to rejoin. The gap was at max 4'30 but is now down to 2'30 thanks to the efforts of mainly Farfetch, Bennelong and Philips. A group of riders have been dropped, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Jacobsen (GC 48th) as highest ranked.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/06.jpg

With his next conquering, Caruso is mathematically secure of the mountain classification, as he is now on 49, with his nearest rival pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier at 26 and only 18 points remaining. Stuyven, Oelerich and Pronskiy are dropped from the break. Indosat and ISA join the chase at the front of the peloton, where another group of riders has been dropped including, amongst others, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Di Maggio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/07.jpg

Caruso is beaten by Ignatiev at the next intermediate, with the remaining second going to Cataldo in third. 40 kilometer to go, the gap is two minutes. Stuyven et al. caught by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/08.jpg

At the third ascent of the climb, the final full ascent, there is no battle for the KoM as the classification is already settled. Riesebeek, Laengen and Dyrnes get the points. However, the group managed to extend its gap to the peloton to three minutes. With 25 kilometer to go, the peloton has to speed up to catch them in time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/09.jpg

Muhlberger cannot follow the pace anymore, leaving twelve leaders. The gap has grown even bigger, around 3'30. UBS leading with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Frank, ISA with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Rodriguez Galindo, and then the favorites. Farfetch, Bennelong, Vesuvio all doing nothing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/10.jpg

Out front they realize their chances look a lot more promising than they would have ever imagined. Brandao attacks with 17 kilometer to go as the gap is still over 3 minutes, T-Mobile now bringing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Wohrer to combat the deficit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/11.jpg

At 12k, the location of the intermediate sprint which does not count on the final lap, the Portuguese is brought back. More worrying is that the gap has gone up to four minutes. The stage win is very likely theirs and the overall victory is also within reach. Here are the five most dangerous riders, adjusted for bonus seconds:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Laengen, at 1'04
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Paulus, at 1'17
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Brandao, at 1'34
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Caruso, at 2'02
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev, at 2'40

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/12.jpg

Ignatiev needs to make up time on Laengen so attacks next, Gebremedhin following. The duo get a lot more room than Brandao ever got.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/13.jpg

Bennelong finally coming into action to reduce the gap with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png McCormick and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Watson. Then Betancourt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Juarez for ISA, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Ssabagwanya for Farfetch. The pace has been so slow that even Di Maggio managed to return.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/14.jpg

At 7.5 the leading duo is brought back by Laengen himself. The gap to the peloton on strike is 4'30, it will be very difficult to get that down to within acceptable margin. It's downhill from here until the final climb which is only about 3 kilometer long.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/15.jpg

And here we have the next candidate: Vichot attacks and quickly leading by 20 seconds. He's at 3'10 in the GC so Laengen can give him some room and take away the bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/16.jpg

3k and we turn onto the climb, Vichot leading by only 10 seconds over the group led by Dyrnes, Riesebeek, Caruso, Paulus and Laengen. Peloton still four minutes down with even Muhlberger a minute ahead of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/17.jpg

And Vichot is caught with two kilometer, we are likely heading towards a sprint. If Paulus wins and Laengen finishes outside the top three, Paulus wins the GC. Otherwise, Laengen will win the GC assuming no time gaps occur and the peloton does not engage the turbo. Dyrnes still leading ahead of Riesebeek and now Cataldo, Laengen behind Paulus.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/18.jpg

One kilometer and the riders stick to the line formation, Dyrnes leading everyone out. Caruso moving forward, Brandao from last now behind Paulus with Laengen on the side. The pace is heavily reduced, allowing the peloton to get a bit closer and possibly save a top ten in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/19.jpg

Caruso launches alongside Dyrnes and we're off. Riesebeek behind them, then a small gap to Paulus and Cataldo followed by Laengen, Brandao and Ignatiev. Gebremedhin and Daniel not sprinting.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/20.jpg

A close one but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Damiano Caruso wins the stage. He will be called to the podium three times, for the stage win, polka dot jersey and also the green jersey. He has been the dominant factor in all sprints today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Dyrnes P2 after leading the entire last two kilometer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek third place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/21.jpg

Paulus fourth, Cataldo fifth, Laengen sixth, all in the same time. For the Norwegian, it will be a tense minute and a bit, hoping the peloton has not closed in too much.

Ignatiev, Brandao, Karatzios and Vichot complete the top ten ahead of Gebremedhin. Daniel twelfth at a small gap. Muhlberger has been caught by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/22.jpg

The favorites sprinting for what it's worth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Bakelants finishes thirteenth ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Kelderman. The peloton did close in a bit, but finish at 2'15 from Caruso.

That means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Vegard Stake Laengen is the surprising but not undeserved winner of the Scandinavia Open Road Race! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Daniel Paulus second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Joni Brandao third in the GC, two very good results for PCT teams. Caruso with even more success as he moves up to fourth!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/SORR/S3/23.jpg

Yates not even amongst the front and looked to have been caught behind a split, but that closed down just in time. He will be given the same time as Bakelants and the entire peloton. The riding of his team and the other teams with favorites today was very pathetic. He will end up fifth in the GC, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Dennis sixth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Goos seventh, Bobridge eighth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda ninth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Boily tenth. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Oomen eleventh and lucky none of the remaining riders were a threat to him in the youth classification, which he wins. Ignatiev up to twelfth from the break, his Delvaux takes away the teams classification from ISA by having three riders in the break.
