Tour du Faso - Stage 1
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/profile.jpg

The first stage of Tour du Faso takes the riders from Bobo to Boroma. The route is flat, but the final twenty kilometer have some very rough roads. The cobblestone specialists should be favorites for the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Habtemichael and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Storer attack from the start. They wouldn't be the only one with this idea.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Panayotov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Akhmaevi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Lauk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Minoungou, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Quispe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Haavardsholm, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Reddish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png I. Richardson made it nine. That wasn't enough, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Castrillo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Connolly want to join as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/03.jpg

Eleven riders duke it out at the intermediate sprint: Panayotov, Storer and Haavardsholm take the points and seconds. The peloton keeps the break close, the gap has never gone above a minute one-third into the stage. All teams with either presence in the break or chasing after it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/04.jpg

And with 70 kilometer to go the breakaway is caught. Will we see a new break or are we all waiting for the cobblestones?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/05.jpg

The answer is new break, but much smaller. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Mostov went first, then Connolly. The Irishman can't quite close the final ten seconds to the American though, the peloton again keeping them within the minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/06.jpg

Connolly was caught and then the peloton gave the sole leader a bit of room, two minutes at the second intermediate sprint. Strangely, there is no battle for it from the sprinters or GC contenders, with Quispe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png De Vos taking free seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/07.jpg

The extra room was short lived, as Mostov is caught with 30 kilometer to go, 10 kilometer before the cobble section. Tryg, Azteca and Netia control the peloton with three riders each setting the pace, they want to set a hard pace for their leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/08.jpg

And so we enter the cobble section which is almost 20 kilometer long. Tryg, Azteca and Netia well positioned with a lot of riders at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/09.jpg

Immediately we have the first puncture: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Ruiz now has to go on a recovery ride. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Abdul Halil also fell victim right at the start. Later we would see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Sunderland, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Guillen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Cheyne with the same problem.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png C. Richardson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Orue riding an Azteca tandem on the left side. On the other side we see Bianchi with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Langeveld and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Kluge. Other riders in the first positions are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Maes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Jacobs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Nepomnyachsniy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Young. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Kasperkiewicz surprisingly a bit further down the pack after his team did part of the work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/11.jpg

About one-third through the section and we have a considerable split, 17 riders now in the front group:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Jacobs, McLay, Minoungou, Ngandamba
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Corwin, Orue, Richardson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Kluge, Langeveld
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Kasperkiewicz, Kolev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Taubel, Young
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Manamalage
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Van Keirsbulck
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Maes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Nepomnyachsniy

Kasperkiewicz actually in last position, only just making it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Abraha, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Lagab and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Van Wyk in the next group at 40 second, the remains of the peloton at 1'30 with many riders struggling to go forward with all the vibration.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/12.jpg

Puncture for Jacobs! Right at the 10k flag, he has to pull over and get a new wheel. They won't wait for him up front, he drops out of a valuable position. Langeveld, Kolev, Ngandamba and McLay were also dropped, and Minoungou is called back to help Jacobs, so we now only have eleven riders in the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/13.jpg

Eleven becomes ten as Corwin is next to drop off after working for Orue and Richardson. The second group at 1'10 including Jacobs, who now drops his helpers and, together with Abraha, tries to get back to the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/14.jpg

The end of the cobblestones is in sight, three more kilometer to the finish line. Corwin at a minute, Jacobs at two having dropped Abraha. These 10 riders will sprint for victory. Nepomnyachsniy, Young and Kluge the best sprinters on paper but after the rough section, it remains to see who has the freshest legs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/15.jpg

However, no one is willing to take the lead. As a result, Corwin returns and Jacobs comes within 30 seconds. Maes leads ahead of Taubel and Young, who has Kluge and Nepomnyachsniy behind him waiting for the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/16.jpg

Nepomnyachsniy and Kluge launch under the flag for the final kilometer, catching Young by surprise. He actually got blocked behind Taubel, who didn't move out of the way in time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/17.jpg

Nepomnyachsniy leading over Kluge, Young finally freed and gaining in the last 500 meters. Van Keirsbulck sprinting for fourth against Maes, Taubel and Kasperkiewicz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/18.jpg

The American comes close but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Alexandr Nepomnyachsniy wins the first stage! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Young squeezing through for second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Kluge third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/19.jpg

Van Keirsbulck fourth ahead of Maes, Kasperkiewicz, Taubel, Manamalage and Orue. Richardson actually had mechanical fault which prevented him from sprinting, losing 37 seconds as a result and finishing eleventh behind Corwin.

With the F1-style bonus seconds, Nepomnyachsniy leads in the GC by seven seconds over Young, ten over Kluge up to 23 over Orue. Corwin at 1'01, Richardson at 1'02.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Faso/S1/20.jpg

Jacobs unfortunate today with the puncture, finishing 12th at 1'11. The gaps behind get bigger. McLay, Minoungou, Ngandamba, Langeveld and Kolev at 2'39. Lagab and Abraha at 3'41. A group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Kumara, Van Wyck at 4'44, including a great recovery ride from Ruiz!

Despite the peloton being all together before the cobblestone section, 24 riders fail to make the time limit of 40 minutes, meaning they lost over two minutes per kilometer. Adastra loses five riders, more than half the team. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Thorsen is the most notable name, he doesn't get a chance to sprint on the next stage. The full list:
