Second mountain top finish in a row but the two stages couldn`t be any more different.
Yesterday the really difficult mid stage climbing but easy finish.
Today rather easy way to the final but then a very steep last couple of kilometers.
The Terento climb as penultimate with 7,7 km and 6,7 % followed by Antholz with 9,7 km and 5,5 % which deludes a bit as the first half of that climb is rather easy.
Surely a stage for Herklotz to attack Spilak`s GC lead if he feels strong enough. And for the rest of the top10-15 it`s an opportunity to shuffle again.
13 riders in todays breakaway and it`s some well known names and some new ones in there. The KoM fight might take place today but a lot less than on previous stages as the big names are missing.
That said yesterdays stage winner Konig (14th GC, 9th KoM) is in there just like couple of riders around the second half of the KoM top10.
Raileanu
Kolesnikov
Dall'Oste
Cataldo
Iturria
Smith
Vosekalns
Egger
Gebremedhin
Novikov
Mamykin
Jang
Tinkoff with 3 apparently having big plans today.
The early Cat.2 goes to former KoM winner Dall'Oste, who moves into 10th now.
Konig, Raileanu, Smith and Iturria score next and so the gap to first two and KoM leader Goos is getting smaller.
Next up the Cat.3 and while it`s only 6 points Konig gives it a nice sprint with Smith and Gebremedhin following.
It`s 50km to go and the Terento Cat.3 awaits the riders. The peloton still has 94 riders but the pace clearly went up recently with Kangert taking over.
Wackermann, Bol, Goos, Dekker are other riders in the first rows but not all are working right now.
The gap to the break is now under 3min with Railleanu being in between the groups and also Jang/MAmykin and the weaker climbers in general struggling.
But also the peloton is quickly splitting into pieces with Gazelle and Generali chasing.
35 riders remain in the first group.
Biggest names being dropped now are Dennis, Guerreiro, Teuns, Stüssi, Carpenter, Ndayisenga, Hadi, Mager, Poljanski, Jaramillo, Raileanu, Majka, Godoy, Dees, Ciccone, Sequera, Mai, Koch.
Once again lots of Generali riders making it Latour/Krizek left with Gesink but most teams with 1 helper only.
Aegon (4), Puma/Aker/Generali/Gazelle/Isostar (3) the exceptions.
Being isolated already are Henao Montoya, Hirt, Haig, Yates, Quintana, Alarcon.
Konig also takes this Cat.3 easily followed by Novikov and Gebremedhin. As Dall'Oste just dropped from the group there simply is no one left to really challenge him and he goes into 3rd position with 58 points just 3 behind Aru.
Goos though with 82 still rather safe.
6 remaining in the front group with Cataldo being with Dall'Oste in between.
Some helpers might come back on the descent but whenever it goes uphill again, they should be dropped quickly again.
With 14km remaining and still on the lower gradients, Puma is organizing the chase with Vasyliv/Arndt. The group is up to 54 riders with another group of 32 not far behind. But the pace picks up now as the gap to the break also went up to 3'45 making it a potential double win for Konig today?
Eventhough Godoy and Latour took over from Puma behind, the gap to the break not going down a lot.
With 3km to go we still have 3-4min with Gebremedhin being the latest, who lost contact.
Still 5 riders fighting for the win.
Same spot, couple minutes later.
Alarcon in attack mode and immediately followed by several others including Quintana and Spilak.
Haig and Oomen not well placed and in danger to lose time. Also Henao Montoya could be 1-2 metres further ahead really.
This acceleration behind really saw the gap melting.
The quintett only having 1'25 left under the Flamme Rouge.
Smith being in the lead now with Vosekalns, Konig, Novikov and Iturria waiting behind him.
But they can`t stop now as the gap continues to go down.
The top3 not giving themselves anything.
Spilak, Gesink and Herklotz next to each other. Schleck right behind them.
Alarcon, Quintana, Hirt in good positions as well.
Yates, Olivier, Formolo, Bongiorno in the next row.
Henao Montoya and Kruijswijk next! The Dutch having a great day and not showing any exhaustment here.
Oomen also with them after being placed further behind earlier.
Haig still there but surely looking slower than the others and in danger to lose his 7th overall today if he gets a gap on the last 1400m.
The gap is almost gone with 400m.
Vosekalns is done and won`t get the stage.
Smith still in front but Novikov and in especially Konig really closing with Iturria in last position.
And then there still is the group Spilak just seconds behind.
There won`t be big gaps today and while Herklotz looks weaker than Spilak/Gesink today, he is up there not allowing any kind of time loss.
Schleck the best of the rest.
In front Iturria has to stop dreaming of the stage and also Novikovis losing some pace.
Smith in front but Konig not giving up yet.
But the Bennelong rider was fastest in the end having more energy. Big win for him but maybe just compensating the points, Haig might lose today?
Konig with the 2nd, which is still some nice points in a row with Novikov also getting another podium for Tinkoff.
No bonus seconds anymore but also no time loss in between the big 3. They all finish next being 25s down.
Schleck at 37s just like Iturria. This could mean an attack for 4th here as Yates is losing time.
Alarcon comes over the line next ahead of Hirt and Quintana. Also Olivier, Formolo, Bongiorno or Henao Montoya in this group. At 49s they only lose a little bit.
Oomen had to fight but just like Kruijswijk and Yates they get the +49s time and not losing on other top10 riders.
Schleck though moves past Yates for 4th indeed.
Haig though is having a gap as he comes over the line alongside Nesset. 50s time loss in the end for them.
Good news for all sprinters. No rider outside the time limit today.
