The third week doesn`t start a lot easier than the previous days. Less climbs, shorter climbs but some kind of Lombardia finish today which will be a test for the GC riders. In especially for some if ridden fast.
8 riders in the break today and quite some interesting ones.
Oomen so far raced alongside better climbers in the GC groups but today decides to go for the break.
Kruijswijk in the break the 3rd day in a row and already up to 10th in the GC! Surely hurting the group a bit as the peloton might not allow him too much of a gap.
Raileanu is 4th in the KoM and might grab the missing points today.
van der Hugenhaben
Wohrer
Lastra
Bernard
Ji
EA Vesuvio with Kaislavuo chasing just like Basso for Repsol and Kamyshev for Air France.
90km to go and a gap of 3min, which is about the most they got so far.
Kruijswijk, Oomen and Raileanu seem to be the strongest in the break. First Bernard and then also Wohrer were dropped with the other three following now as well on the Cat.3.
On top Oomen takes the points ahead of the other two. Raileanu up to 34 points now (Goos at 56 leading).
The gap goes up a bit on the uphill and is now at 5min with 50km to go.
Oomen and Kruijswijk in the lead now over the Cat.1 as Raileanu is dropped a bit and down to 3rd.
Goos, Aru attacked from the peloton for some more points with Pedrero and Guerreiro claiming some by chasing.
25 riders only in group 1 followed by 14 in group 2 of the peloton. Team ranking wise this is interesting as Puma is losing some riders here having Arndt, Vasyliv and Mager all in the 2nd as also Dekker for Aegon while Gazelle has Kruijswijk up front and 2 in the first peloton.
Zardini and Hadi still in front as last support. So right now no changes in the 1-2 of the teams.
With Smith, Kangert, Nesset, Novikov, Vosekalns, Dall'Oste, Lunke, Tvetcov, Jaramillo, Teuns, Poljanski, Ndayisenga more riders with decent GC or support have been dropped.
Isostar with Augustyn and Guerreiro (who is having a strong race in general) are still up there and chase alongside Repsol (Pedrero), Puma (Hadi) and Generali (Latour) with their last riders.
The only other helpers in that group are Goos, Zardini, Cataldo and Furdi.
All other GC riders isolated there with Aru and Kolesnikov also part of that group.
The group behind around Arndt, Mager, Dekker, Sequera, Smith, Nesset though still trying to come back. No Arndt in there though!
Next Cat.2 and Oomen takes it and distances Kruijswijk by 11s.
With 15km to go and still a gap of 4min, they might decide the stage win and have chances for a GC jump as the peloton is allowing them a bit too much here. All others caught by now and so Goos, Aru and Smith take the remaining points, which leads to 70 for Goos ahead of Aru`s 54, Raileanu at 44.
The first GC rider to struggle today. GC´s 14th Konig having a gap to the others before the final climb. Not looking good here and Generali/Puma/Isostar keep on chasing as all have 2 helpers again in that group.
7,4km to go and the Dutch duo about to start the San Fermo Della Battaglia climb. 2,3km in length and 9,1% in average.
3min the gap as they lost a bit lately.
Behind Goos and Aru attack. Likely for the points but the GC riders shouldn`t allow them too much as first is already 9th in the GC.
Again Oomen is the stronger and has gapped Kruijswijk. 20s this time and with basically only the downhill left, those might be enough for the stage!
Aru in the end takes the last points as Goos wasn`t allowed to open a gap with the other teams chasing hard.
Also no attacks by them though.
The first attack comes on the downhill only with 2.6km to go.
Alarcon with another desperate attempt. So far he was not able to open a gap with any of his attacks this race. Goos chasing behind.
With less than 1km left Kruijswijk still trying to make it back. Down to 12s but it`s not far and Oomen still has energy left.
And the Lierse rider takes the win! Big one for him, which comes with a nice GC jump as well. Dutch day here with Kruijswijk in 2nd and also gaining more time in the GC.
Maybe the top10 teams slowly start to take him seriously now?
Aru was no danger for the favourites as he is 19min down as 24th and so he was allowed to take 3rd. 1'44 behind already.
Alarcon at 2'20 then in 4th after keeping a small gap but race officials are hard on him and give the next the same time.
Goos, Hadi, Zardini the order.
Surely most GC riders took a day off after the hard mountain stages recently and the stages still ahead.
Konig though still lost more time and comes in as 36th losing another 1'19 today.
GC wise Kruijswijk up to 6th!, Oomen in 9th and Konig down to 17th.
The team ranking also towards Gazelle now as they pass Aegon for 1st.
