Stage 6 for the puncheurs and GC riders again. The profile already shows that the climbs are rather long, so it`s not a typical hill stage plus the length of 236km is quite long for a GT.
If the finish was on top that Cat.2, time gaps would be very likely to happen. Afterwards it`s going down a bit with another steep but shorter climb and then down again with a tiny uphill sprint on lower percentages towards the end.
Surely the chance for attacks are there but the easier 2nd half of the long climb and the downhills surely work against it.
Sometimes your only job was to have one rider in the break. Seeing Podium Ambition`s squad here, you realize, breakaways are the only chance to shine here anyway but then again all of their riders are weaker than those in the break.
Still punishment morning for those as they failed to deliver. 7 riders of them chasing with Novardianto a bit behind them likely being their option to attack later.
As said, the Podium Ambition guys are not the strongest, in especially uphill and so the gap extended on the early climb making it a day without them in the end.
8+1 riders in there:
Chatarunga
Luchshenko
Bekmanis
Restrepo
Blums
Chhetri
Marzuki
Boonratanathanakorn
Cink, who will re-join a bit later again but surely has shown some weakness by being dropped already.
That said, being the best placed as 68th and 2'25 he still got 10 bonus seconds later on.
Aegon working on sprinter and GC days it seems. Likely for Zardini, who is sitting in 2nd of the GC and having a decent sprint for such finish.
Gazelle today having learned from the earlier stage and focussing on Formolo today as Ginanni is now working already. Their depth for such stage is amazing and next to their GC rider also Furdi could be an option.
Also Puma and Generali are seen at times chasing.
The Coppa Casarinelle ahead. 13,3 km with an average of 5% even though the first half is easily harder.
Boonratanathanakorn in the gap proving to be the strongest as he goes cleaer just under the 20km mark. But the gap behind is not very big and the peloton already closing with mainly the veterans Dekker and Ginanni chasing right now.
On top the SPAR rider was just caught (sorry for not having him in the pic...he actually is on the far right in this tiny invisible room).
Van Niekerk and Ginanni over the line first, then the caught breakaway rider ahead of Furdi and Frankiny.
So Gazelle going all in for Formolo as their 2nd puncheur option also chasing now.
Still more than 100 rider in the pack and we now see a somewhat unexpected move. Alarcon tries it on the short climb and while not being a very good puncheur, his time loss of 2'01 by now makes such move needed.
Spilak and Herklotz just like Schleck though sitting right behind him not really allowing a gap to open. But showing they are worried by him still as they chase him themselves.
This short climb was enough to split the peloton with 28 riders in front.
Behind you easily can spot the white jersey of Oomen.
Others are Goos, Aru, Kolesnikov, Augustyn, Smith. No big names really for the top10.
While Alarcon never really got a big gap, he still was ahead of the peloton for a while. Though Stüssi finally making the catch with Tvetcov and Gazelle sitting right behind.
Further behind Dall'Oste working big to bring Oomen back to the group. Also De Plus still up there and the gap is not big!
1.3km to go and Aegon showing interest to attack. Olivier on the left with all others on the other side with Haig, Schleck in the wind and then Gesink, Herklotz, Hirt, Spilak, Formolo, Henao, Bongiorno, Zardini, Konig, Teuns, Quintana, Ginanni, Arndt, Kangert being up there as well in the first rows.
Alarcon again a bit further behind!
Olivier never made it a gap but is still placed well.
Haig still leading out the big favourites with Herklotz about to attack him with 600m to go.
Schleck, Spilak, Hirt and a surprisingly strong Henao Montoya up there today. The Colombian really found his puncheur legs so far in this Giro.
Formolo, Bongiorno and Konig the only others with a realistic chance as Zardini is being the first following with a gap already.
Herklotz vs Spilak it seems with Hirt and Olivier being those that give them a nice challenge.
Schleck and Haig are going backwards and also Henao not getting any faster now under attack of Formolo and Bongiorno on the other side.
Herklotz does it again. Once more being the strongest on the uphill stages. With ease he takes the win it seems ahead of Spilak and Hirt!
Olivier in 4th just ahead of Formolo and Henao Montoya.
Konig, Bongiorno, Yates and Haig complete the top10.
Gesink as 14th lucky to not have a gap as he clearly had a bad day today.
Actually no gap at all up to rider 93 as whenever a gap seemed to appear, one single ride was in between to avoid such. Surely not ideal.
Good for Alarcon though, who was one of those single riders in 21st and also Oomen who was just a bit behind him. This would otherwise have been the first gap here with also Quintana being lucky being in 33rd in this group as well.
