After two sprinter days and yesterdays change in the GC, todays might see the next shuffe as we hit the first hill top finish. It`s one of the easier uphill finishes here but with almost 230km in length and some up and down before, surely a challenge for many riders.
Ginanni surely has picked this stage as a goal while Spilak and Gesink are the other favourites with Herklotz and Teuns also being some of the specialists.
It will be interesting so see the likes of Alarcon, Schleck or Henao Montoya as they usually prefer the longer climbs.
If this attack stands, Evonik are having an interesting tactic here. All in for the stage or just the KoM jersey?
4 riders of them are teaming up with some others trying to get into the breakaway.
Bekmanis
Egger
Sakalou
Paprstka
Luchshenko
Gebremedhin
Grashev
Bostner
Wohrer
Kulimbetov
Indosat in person of Luchshenko not being their friend here as he jumps to the KoM win on the Cat.4, which was needed to equal Meijers total by Paprstka, who only comes over the line in 3rd.
Instead Evonik followed the attack with Egger, who is the stronger uphill rider anyway to get 3 points. Who knows if those later are worth it as the team has a decent KoM GT history.
Bostner and Grashev didn`t make it over the top with the others and are dropped.
All others, which are 4 Evonik and 2 Indosat riders are in the break of 8.
Quite a task for the other two who though keep working for now.
Roles have changed a bit and so it`s Gazelle (Ginanni), Farfetch (Yates), Generali (Gesink/Teuns) and SPAR (Sirironnachai) working behind. Last team a bit surprising to be honest but not a lot of other uphill stages they can aim for outside a break.
With Kruijswijk working as well, it wasn`t possible for them to stay in front. With 6km to go they are basically caught just before the final climb.
Gazelle with couple of riders around Ginanni in front.
Spilak+Bol right behind, Herklotz as well with Vasyliv at least right behind him.
Teuns+Dees and Gesink in the mix for Generali
Schleck, Olivier, Alarcon, Turgis, Yates, Hirt, Zardini, Hugenhaben, Quintana, Henao Montoya, Haig, Formolo, Bongiorno, Konig all in the first couple of rows.
So far not missing anyone but the climb will be a test for some of them.
Gazelle in full control and Kangert, Tratnik and Kruijswijk take care for Ginanni while their GC rider Formolo is in the bunch alongside most others.
Herklotz already just behind them in the white jersey just like Spilak and Gesink even though Teuns is the better placed at the moment.
Alarcon and Schleck still surprisingly well placed in the first 10-15 spots but still 3,7km to go.
1.7km to go with the Flamme Rouge being weirdly placed here.
Ginanni though accelerates and is followed by Teuns.
Arndt being up there now for Herklotz trying to give him some slipstream.
Spilak, Gesink right with him.
And Sirironnachai really showing up as well now after his team did work all day.
Schleck, Olivier, Formolo, Yates etc. move up while Alarcon is the first to struggle having already lost ~10-15 spots. Neither Henao being in the best position.
600m to go and Ginanni might have gone too early.
Instead Spilak, Herklotz in the lead now with a wild Schleck accelerating behind them alongside puncheurs Teuns and Turgis.
Haig and Formolo well placed as well while Sirironnachai is dropped back again.
Gesink not as strong as he was expected behind Ginanni next to Hirt.
The Dutch though moving up now with 200m to go but still has a bit to Herklotz/Gesink in the lead.
And Herklotz once again shows his sprint skills in a close fight against Spilak. Gesink with a late push for 3rd but no time gaps behind them until Hadi in 38th.
Formolo, Schleck, Haig as next over the line show their will to perform high in this Giro and while Gazelle had nice depth today with Kangert in 7th, Ginanni in the end dropped to 11th. His attack was a good attempt but it did not work out in hte end. With 3 more riders in the top38 though, they have been one of the big teams today and actually just Isostar (5) and Puma (4) came close.
Big news then though that some bigger names are behind a split.
Alarcon obviously the top one here losing 1'18 as 46th. The others are more the 2nd rider of the teams such as Goos, Tvetcov, Dekker, Vasyliv, Smith and so on.
GC wise Herklotz gained enough bonus seconds to be back in the lead as only Zardini was also in that top group while Dennis and Manninen were dropped.
