Day two is for the sprinters but as yesterday saw a uphill prologue, none of them is in reach to get the Maglia Rosa and neither is today such an easy sprint to guarantee a finish for them.
It`s in fact quite bumpy and a Milan San Remo light with two late hills, which surely can exhaust some of them.
The field not having any real hill sprinter with Gaviria already being the best and Ackermann following.
Swift, Howard and Vesely though all not too bad neither and might be todays top favourites.
It took some time and 2-3 attempts until the break finally formed.
Kaislavuo and Paprstka wanted it the most as they went into all attempts.
The other two are Kanerva and Owen.
First being the best placed in 145th and 1'56 behind. So not a huge danger for the GC leader Herklotz.
Well. This was weird.
The gap was there and big enough but once the climb was reached, they had no longer been working together and they are caught again.
Working at the moment are Aegon, Bennelong and Aker but as Zardini is easily the best climber of those, he is pulling the peloton on the Cat.3 all by himself, while he surely should save his energy for harder stages.
Just before the top was reached attacks for the KoM led to a new group of the day with Meijers taking the points. Vink also in that group, which is interesting as both were the first attackers of the day and with some luck are now once again in the successful break.
The others are yet again Paprstka and Le Court, who take the other points.
This time the group worked together and still have 2min with 55km to go just ahead of the double hill.
Working are the same teams as before:
Aker (Silva, Yzeiraj)
Aegon (Zardini, Van Hooydonck, van der Hugenhaben)
Bennelong (Schultz, McCormick)
Moser and Isostar just sitting up there as well but don`t work. And also Puma not having worked a single second today. They don`t have a sprinter but usually you see the GC leader`s team work but maybe they are not even trying to defend it really as the burden of having it too early can work against you in the end.
The Cat.2 goes to Meijers ahead of Vink with Le Court and Paprstka following with a gap.
5th and the last 2 points for Zardini as he once again being the main worker on the uphill sections.
40km and ~2min gap.
Again Meijers on the final Cat.3 and so he easily takes the KoM jersey with 22 points.
Vink in 2nd having 12 followed by Paprstka with 10 and Le Court 8.
The gap here is now down to just over 1min and 24km remaining.
The downhill sees Aker with quite some pace as Yzeraj, Silva and also Oss are chasing which leads to some riders losing contact after being exhausted after the climbing.
Marezco, Bonifazio, Meyer, Brus and Scully. Mainly leadouts but as also Aker is impacted, they "slow down" a bit as the 2nd group is just a few seconds behind. Scully being the main leadout for Swift and a vital part of the train while also Lierse suffering with Gaviria`s potential leadout being not good on the uphill.
Only main sprinter off is Bertilsson, last years stage winner in the Giro and even further behind.
Interesting. The 2nd in the GC, Jack Haig is used to chase for Howard. Same with Olivier for Vesely.
That`s two GC riders here spending energy but it`s needed as the gap to the breakaway was still there.
Those two though easily reduce it and with 14km to go it`s just 17s and they are about to be caught.
4km and we see some chaotic sprint preparation as too many leadout riders are dropped or in bad positions.
Aker at least having Oss in front of Swift but with 4km to go, that surely is not ideal and 1-2 riders too few.
Aegon has the numbers but Sbaragli is missing for Vesely as it`s their uphill riders around the Czech.
Howard also just 1 1/2 helpers with Smith in front and McCormick still a bit behind.
Right now this is the perfect leadout for Afewerki really as the Vesuvio rider somehow found way to Swift`s wheel.
Van Poppel decently placed as well while the others are in an okay position but need to avoid any blockings by helpers as they are in the bigger bunch behind.
Oss Swift Olivier Afewerki Smith Zardini van der Hugenhaben Howard Vesely McCormick Dekker Wackermann Van Poppel Manninen Gaviria Kemboi
If you miss Goss. He is there. Right behind a split not looking good. Clearly struggling after the climbing. Same goes for Stauff, Guardini.
GC wise no big name behind. "Helpers" Goos and Arndt though in the later group clearly not focussing on their own GC.
3km and we see Oss dropping back. Yes, that`s Swift in the wind with no support left.
Instead Bennelong now looking decent with 2 riders around but in fact his support also at the limit.
Same must be said about Vesely and Van Poppel. Both have lost a bit of ground and need to accelerate soon.
Also Afewerki, who had a great wheel is losing a bit on Swift despite the slowish sprint as no one wants to go first with Swift and Howard both in the wind.
Out of nowhere Kemboi now up there using his flat as advantage.
Manninen smartly followed Kemboi and with 1km to go decides to open the sprint.
Kemboi not in this picture being on the other side of the road.
Howard and Swift do their best after their long position in the wind.
Afewerki still behind them just like Wackermann while Vesley/Van Poppel indeed drop behind.
But it`s Gaviria actually coming fast on the right with a mix of GC riders in the middle such as Olivier/Zardini, Alarcon, Herklotz, Gesink, Schleck...
No one was able to follow that acceleration of Manninen today and due to too many leadouts struggling and a chaotic sprint, he was able to take a big win home in their wildcard.
Kemboi as well a surprise on 2nd ahead of top sprinter Swift and best hill sprinter Gaviria.
Then Hirt already as first non sprinter with Olivier, Herklotz, Henao, Zardini and Wackermann following.
