The start of the 2019 Giro d'Italia is a semi prologue/timetrial with 8,2 km lenght. Another difficulty is the climb, which is rated hilly but in total has a length of ~3 km with quite a steep gradient of more than 10% on a longer section, which makes it a longer climb than a regular hill.
The top favourites though according to the bookies are the allrounders around Gesink or Herklotz but also the pure prologue specialists Leung or Dennis. Question is how much time they can gain on the flat half before surely losing on the uphill.
Early on the allrounders and also already the climbers are doing the best times.
Yates leading 1s over Quintana, who both had an early start.
This somewhat shows that it`s not the mountain stat alone but a mix of hill, TT and mountain to have big impact today.
Other riders already in the finish are Dion Smith +11, Sam Oomen +12 or Dylan Teuns +43.
Leung just moments later showing that just TT skills alone won`t help today being super slow on the climb and being passed there even by mid level climbers losing 2min.
Goos next and as a better timetrialist he beats the others taking the hot seat. Same time though as Yates.
Konig next with a new best. 4s faster in 15'05.
Who is the first being under 15min?
Outsider Dees being 5th just a bit behind Quintana, once more showing that TT skills are very valuable today while Majka surprisingly high as well just like Tvetcov or Kangert as allrounders.
Haig with quite a start. Being a good time trialist helped him on the flat but his climbing skills really improved and so we see the first rider under 15min.
7s faster than Konig, which is 13s faster than Quintana, 30s to Bongiorno, who also reached the finish showing the gap to a non time trialist today.
A bit later Dennis coming in but losing 26s. Too long for a pure prologue and too steep for his decent climbing skills while Dekker still has it being up to 3rd and +8.
Pure climbing skills by Alarcon then but as said, a mix is needed today.
That said, still a pretty decent ride up there and surely on a good day as he comes in 7th with +15, just 2s off Quintana and ahead of Formolo +16 and Dees.
Olivier next in the finish and actually same time as the Repsol leader.
Henao Montoya similar to Alarcon with a bit better TT but less climbing skills. Though as said before, Henao really loves the Giro and once again he has a huge form here and comes in 2nd just 1s off Haig! That`s really impressive.
Hirt a decent stage racer as well being good against the clock. It`s a solid ride up to 3rd and +3 only beating most of his contenders.
Schleck is slowly on the decline and while still an excellent climber, his strength on other terrains are not as good anymore.
9th and +13 for him beating Alarcon today.
Gesink is easily todays top favourite and while he had a good ride, surprisingly he is beaten!
Same time as Henao Montoya, which is rather ridicoulous on paper but also Haig is better and remains in the lead! Wow.
Likely on a bad day here as his possibilities were so much more.
Herklotz another big favourite on todays stage just like the whole GC. And likely an average day today is enough to take the lead.
14'50 which is 6s faster than Haig, gaining 20s on Schleck, 22s to Alarcon.
Spilak has the uphill skills but does he have the time trial to beat the German?
No. It`s not enough and in fact losing 13s which is enough for 6th today. Surely similar to Gesink on a bad day here. Good for them, it`s just in a short time trial as the mountains and longer TTs can hurt more with a bad leg day.
So Herklotz taking the lead early on setting a big mark today. Haig surprisingly 2nd ahead of Gesink, who is still up there and needs to do better in the long TTs as his climbing is not as good as the others.
Henao with a fantastic ride up to 4th ahead of Hirt and Spilak.
All main GC riders though within todays top 15 and within 23s, so nothing lost here by anyone.
