Stage 5
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/00.jpg

The first ever Tour of Uppsala ends today with a circuit through the city. If nothing extraordinary happens, the Top 10 of the GC are set in stone, but a few minor places are still in the air: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Campenaerts at 13th is tied with the same time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Ablenado one spot behind him, so the stage result might matter for them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway, who currently is 18th, could jump both with a stage win or climb two or three spots with a podium finish. He’s also in prime position to take the green jersey, which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ludvigsson currently wears. The Swede has 45 points, but Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest follow closely with 39 points each. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen (29), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand (26), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger (25) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish (23) are also technically still within reach. But all of them will most of all target the stage win, so let’s find out how that goes:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/02.jpg

The peloton took it easy for the first couple of kilometres. In bad conditions, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Cras is the first to attack. Berg Cycles has had a disappointing race as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre didn’t achieve much, maybe this is an attempt to save the race a little. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Hermans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Hänninen follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/03.jpg

The trio didn’t make it very far, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Hänninen managed to jump onto the eventually successful move. It took a while, but he forms the break of the day with these four other riders: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Arvidsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Groselj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Okamoto and, in a recurring role, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/05.jpg

The first sprint passes by uncontested. Neither bonus seconds nor points matter for anyone. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Okamoto is the best-placed rider in this group, 48th at + 3’26, and just 1’31 behind his compatriot pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Onodera in the youth rankings. Should this group make it, that’s something we can keep an eye on. But given how the sprint teams have handled things so far, that seems unlikely. The group has a good 3 minutes on the pack at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/07.jpg

No sprint at the second intermediate point either. The group works well together, it’s the first to reach a gap of 4 minutes in this race, but that was already a few dozen kilometres ago. It’s down to about 2’45 now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/09.jpg

With the advance of this group getting closer to a minute, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Groselj tries to give them another spark and attacks!

He leads his companions by about 15 seconds for a few kilometres and the gap to the peloton does increase to a minute and a half again, but it just seems like prolonging the inevitable.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/11.jpg

One after another, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Okamoto, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Arvidsson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate also try to go solo, but eventually, the Kiwi is the last to get caught by the peloton. As we’re used to by now, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Volvo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png McCormick are at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/13.jpg

Two strong sprint trains as we’re getting closer to the finish line. On the left side, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Stenersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn in his slipstream.

To their right, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Gough and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl lead pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, who has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig on his wheel.

At the bottom right of the screen, we can see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Wippert trying to make his way to the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen to his right. Once again absent: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Gerald Ciolek, currently in about 50th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/14.jpg

The two sprint trains cross paths and both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish have to leave a gap to their respective lead out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger still behind Ahlstand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest now the two behind Cavendish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/15.jpg

Number 18 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Weiss drops back and blocks his captain pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn in the process! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts makes a big dash to the front with the World Champ directly behind him. It looks good for a home win, but we’re still 2 kilometres from the finish line. Can they keep it up?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish is still comfortable behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest are also in a good position, the latter now looking at the points jersey with Holloway struggling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/16.jpg

We’re coming closer to the red kite, 1300 metres left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl easily passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand goes into the wind from very, very far away! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre tries to close the gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, as does pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger a few positions behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand still lead, but it looks like both went too early. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest dash between them and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway comes next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig with blazing speed on the left side of the road!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre takes a commanding lead as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest is spent! In contrast to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger, who are still going strong and aiming for a podium position today at least!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre is struggling now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway try to jump by!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/20.jpg

And it’s actually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway who takes it! What an incredible recovery to win his second stage and the points classification! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger comes just short, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre saves a podium spot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Wippert edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig for his best result of this race. Both stayed patient and it payed off.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen takes sixth in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn. The trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish complete the Top 10 in that order. They simply went way too early and were punished for it, despite tailwind on the home stretch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E5/22.jpg

Look at this! Splits in the peloton! And in contrast to the usual splits at the end of sprint stages that are neutralized, this one actually counts! The group of sprinters is awarded 39 seconds on the peloton, which brings pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway up to fifth overall! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre moves from 41st to 21st.

And there’s another small split further back. No changes for the Top 20 there, but a couple of riders in the 20s, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Li, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Bond and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthart are caught behind and lose around 10 positions each. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Tanfield and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev are the biggest benefactor, they move up from 29 and 30 to 23 and 24, respectively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Campenaerts meanwhile finished in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Ablenado to stay ahead of him in the GC. Both do lose one spot to Holloway though.

What a wild finish to an interesting stage race. The favorite fulfils his role, a local rider excites the fans and finishes second and the sprints provident plenty entertainment. A good first time for the Tour of Uppsala, if you ask me.
