Stage 5
The first ever Tour of Uppsala ends today with a circuit through the city. If nothing extraordinary happens, the Top 10 of the GC are set in stone, but a few minor places are still in the air: Campenaerts at 13th is tied with the same time as Ablenado one spot behind him, so the stage result might matter for them.
Holloway, who currently is 18th, could jump both with a stage win or climb two or three spots with a podium finish. He’s also in prime position to take the green jersey, which Ludvigsson currently wears. The Swede has 45 points, but Holloway and Vanderbiest follow closely with 39 points each. Manninen (29), Ahlstrand (26), Enger (25) and Cavendish (23) are also technically still within reach. But all of them will most of all target the stage win, so let’s find out how that goes:
The peloton took it easy for the first couple of kilometres. In bad conditions, Cras is the first to attack. Berg Cycles has had a disappointing race as Silvestre didn’t achieve much, maybe this is an attempt to save the race a little. Hermans and Hänninen follow.
The trio didn’t make it very far, but Hänninen managed to jump onto the eventually successful move. It took a while, but he forms the break of the day with these four other riders: Arvidsson, Groselj, Okamoto and, in a recurring role, Gate.
The first sprint passes by uncontested. Neither bonus seconds nor points matter for anyone. Okamoto is the best-placed rider in this group, 48th at + 3’26, and just 1’31 behind his compatriot Onodera in the youth rankings. Should this group make it, that’s something we can keep an eye on. But given how the sprint teams have handled things so far, that seems unlikely. The group has a good 3 minutes on the pack at this point.
No sprint at the second intermediate point either. The group works well together, it’s the first to reach a gap of 4 minutes in this race, but that was already a few dozen kilometres ago. It’s down to about 2’45 now.
With the advance of this group getting closer to a minute, Groselj tries to give them another spark and attacks!
He leads his companions by about 15 seconds for a few kilometres and the gap to the peloton does increase to a minute and a half again, but it just seems like prolonging the inevitable.
One after another, Okamoto, Arvidsson and Gate also try to go solo, but eventually, the Kiwi is the last to get caught by the peloton. As we’re used to by now, Kraftwerk, Volvo and McCormick are at the front.
Two strong sprint trains as we’re getting closer to the finish line. On the left side, Ahlstrand follows Stenersen and Roelandts with Enger, Holloway, Silvestre and Lutsyshyn in his slipstream.
To their right, Gough and Willwohl lead Cavendish, who has Vanderbiest and Selig on his wheel.
At the bottom right of the screen, we can see Wippert trying to make his way to the front with Manninen to his right. Once again absent: Gerald Ciolek, currently in about 50th position.
The two sprint trains cross paths and both Ahlstrand and Cavendish have to leave a gap to their respective lead out. Silvestre and Enger still behind Ahlstand, Holloway and Vanderbiest now the two behind Cavendish.
Number 18 Weiss drops back and blocks his captain Holloway and Lutsyshyn in the process! Roelandts makes a big dash to the front with the World Champ directly behind him. It looks good for a home win, but we’re still 2 kilometres from the finish line. Can they keep it up?
Cavendish is still comfortable behind Willwohl. Silvestre and Vanderbiest are also in a good position, the latter now looking at the points jersey with Holloway struggling.
We’re coming closer to the red kite, 1300 metres left. Willwohl easily passes Roelandts, so Ahlstrand goes into the wind from very, very far away! Silvestre tries to close the gap to Cavendish, as does Holloway to Enger a few positions behind.
Cavendish and Ahlstrand still lead, but it looks like both went too early. Silvestre and Vanderbiest dash between them and Holloway comes next to Selig with blazing speed on the left side of the road!
Silvestre takes a commanding lead as Vanderbiest is spent! In contrast to Holloway, Selig and Enger, who are still going strong and aiming for a podium position today at least!
Silvestre is struggling now! Enger and Holloway try to jump by!
And it’s actually Holloway who takes it! What an incredible recovery to win his second stage and the points classification! Enger comes just short, Silvestre saves a podium spot.
Wippert edges out Selig for his best result of this race. Both stayed patient and it payed off.
Manninen takes sixth in front of Lutsyshyn. The trio of Ahlstrand, Vanderbiest and Cavendish complete the Top 10 in that order. They simply went way too early and were punished for it, despite tailwind on the home stretch.
Look at this! Splits in the peloton! And in contrast to the usual splits at the end of sprint stages that are neutralized, this one actually counts! The group of sprinters is awarded 39 seconds on the peloton, which brings Holloway up to fifth overall! Silvestre moves from 41st to 21st.
And there’s another small split further back. No changes for the Top 20 there, but a couple of riders in the 20s, including Li, Bond and Ligthart are caught behind and lose around 10 positions each. Tanfield and Ignatiev are the biggest benefactor, they move up from 29 and 30 to 23 and 24, respectively.
Campenaerts meanwhile finished in front of Ablenado to stay ahead of him in the GC. Both do lose one spot to Holloway though.
What a wild finish to an interesting stage race. The favorite fulfils his role, a local rider excites the fans and finishes second and the sprints provident plenty entertainment. A good first time for the Tour of Uppsala, if you ask me.
