Stage 4
Welcome to this race’s most significant stage in terms of the overall classification. After stage 1 saw some weirder results due to an unsuspectingly impactful short climb, this one should be kinder to classical time trialists. While we do have a few short, nasty ascents again with slopes up to 8 percent including in the final hundred metres, there’s more than enough flat to make up for it – at least it should be.
You can check back to the preview for an overview of all favorites. Of those, these are the Top 5 in the current GC with their deficits to overall leader Ludvigsson:
Coppel+ 6 Golovash+ 11 Viennet+ 13 Schädlich+ 15 Ignatiev+ 16
As you can see, it’s all still fairly close together, so let’s just go ahead and see what today has to offer!
On a beautiful course by the seaside in less than beautiful weather, it takes a while for someone to set a first respectable time. It is set by Rei Onodera …
37’41
… and only identified as such because Marcel Kittel fails to beat it! Certainly not what the German had in mind after a poor performance in the prologue.
37’45
Stannard, another rider who came here with big ambitions, can’t deliver on them today either – a whole minute behind the Rakuten rider.
38’41
cycleYorkshire has a number of strong riders in this race though, and one of them takes over as provisional leader: Andrew Tennant with a new best time.
37’28
We get a small impression of the slopes the riders are dealing with in some parts of the race as Haugard throws himself towards the finish line. Entering today in 32nd overall, we’ll have to see how far this time takes the Norwegian Champ.
37’56
Closely behind him follows Luke Durbridge, who takes the lead and makes it a 1-2 for his team for now. We also get a feeling for how big the gaps might become today, as he gains more than a minute on Li, who currently sits in 10th place. Durbridge was 23 seconds behind GC leader Ludvigsson and 18 seconds behind Jerome Coppel before today.
37’16
Shortly after, Victor Campenaerts finishes. He was just 15 seconds behind Durbridge on the first checkpoint but loses more than half an additional minute until the finish line. Energy conservation might be key today.
38’04
Rakuten continues to have really strong time trialing performances here in Sweden. Onodera still sits in third place, now in front of Cheung in fourth and Kuboki’s time here is good enough for a provisional seventh.
37’55
Lukas Schädlich started today in 13th place in the GC. But he takes a big loss here, more than a minute on Durbrige!
38’27
Pokälä can’t repeat his good prologue performance and falls back even further.
38’43
Salcone almost overtakes Matti Manninen, but still comes short of a good time.
38’41
With only nine riders left on the road, here’s a look at the leaderboard:
Durbridge and Tennant also currently lead the GC and remember, the differences between riders were small before today. We’ll see where the upcoming riders end up in relation to those two.
Emilien Viennet looked strong on stage 1, but today is not his best day. He loses a lot of time and probably his Top 10 overall spot. cycleYorkshire still looking good, though.
38’20
Pierre Rolland on the other hand does very well. His time is good enough for a provisional fourth today and third overall. Have I said anything about how good Rakuten performs yet?
37’43
Oleksandr Golovash’s stoic face doesn’t reveal much, but he won’t be happy. His time is one of the worst of the original cluster of favorites.
38’46
Gate and Holloway’s time in the Top 10 are over, as expected - although Holloway stays in the Top 20-, but the important man is the one close behind them here!
Next to Gate, who is the second rider who started before him, Jerome Coppel crosses the line. He was one second behind Durbridge at the intermediate time check, but the second half of the course was a massive demonstration of power! He crushes everyone else by almost a minute and takes a commanding lead.
36’18
Three riders are left on the road, but we can discount Romain Vanderbiest for the GC. The question is where Vadim Ratiy and Tobias Ludvigsson shuffle in. Durbridge and Tennant are still set for the overall podium, with the two Rakuten riders and Marcel Kittel – whose time doesn’t look as bad as it initially seemed – behind them!
The Swede passes the first time check 23 seconds behind Durbridge and 22 behind Coppel. That’s reasonable. But as we’ve seen, the real time differences stem from the second part of the course – which should suit him.
Vadim Ratiy sprints towards the line. He lost 42 seconds in the first part, but only 24 more after that! Not enough to beat Durbridge today, but enough to stay ahead of him the GC!
37’24
And Ludvigsson? He’s faster than even Durbridge! Second for today, second overall!
