--
Stage 3
A similar stage to yesterday: two intermediate and a mountain sprint, albeit in a different order, and again, we’re looking at the mountain jersey and the overall classification – next to the stage win, of course.
Nikolcevic, Gate and Hänninen enter the day with 5, 3 and 1 mountain points each, but if none of them manages to be part of the breakaway, we might be looking at a tie breaker for the mountain jersey, as no more points will be distributed over the final two stages.
We also have three sprinters who could acquire the yellow jersey to wear it in tomorrow’s time trial. After yesterday’s win, Holloway only needs any podium spot to take it, while Manninen and Silvestre still have to win the stage to get the overall lead.
Speaking of the polkadots: Gate is among the first to attack, and as you’ll have spotted already: Nikolcevic isn’t far off either.
And they both make it along with another familiar face from yesterday, Repsol’s Horton, as well as Abraha, Kiskonen and Gate’s teammate Porter. Let’s see if the peloton gives this group more leeway than yesterday’s.
We’ve seen this twice already before: Horton wins the intermediate sprint, the first of the day. Gate misses out on additional bonus seconds, but his 11th overall may be the reason why they’re kept on a short leash again. The gap fluctuates between two and two and a half minutes but doesn’t increase further.
Gate sat at the back of the group the entire day, presumably to conserve energy for this moment – but he’s still caught off guard as Abraha is the first to accelerate towards the mountain sprint. Nikolcevic also isn’t in prime position, but remember, he only needs one point to take the classification!
Horton proves his superior acceleration once more as Abraha is slowing down. This could open the door for Nikolcevic!
But Abraha holds on! No points for Nikolcevic. But he’s the better time trialist and already leads Horton by half a minute in the GC. This might still be enough for him. Jayco disappoints and can’t take advantage of their numbers.
Horton adds another one to his collection, but this time Gate is attentive! Four bonus seconds bring him up to provisional fifth overall.
Except for Porter, who fell behind after the last sprint, this group has been much more resilient than the one from yesterday. Still, they eventually do get caught. More than 10 kilometres left for the teams to prepare for the sprint and already we see the jerseys of McCormick and Kraftwerk at the front of the peloton.
Kraftwerk has the most visible sprint train indeed, this time very well-structured with Cavendish behind Willwohl and Kreder, Manninen follows them closely.
Holloway in green is already very close to the front with only one man in front of him. Enger, Vanderbiest and Lutsyshyn follow his path.
Volvo’s train got a little scattered with Ahlstrand at the very bottom trying to find Roelandts’ wheel, who in turn has two more Volvo riders ahead of him. Ciolek, one of yesterday’s biggest disappointments, tries to get into a better position, but he’s only the second Swisslion rider in this picture with Groselj being the one behind Manninen.
Kraftwerk’s train is still going strong with 3 kilometres left. Holloway has only Francovic left in front but all the more rivals behind him. Wippert found Manninen’s wheel on the left side of the road with Selig close behind. Ahlstrand has reconnected with his teammates. Behind him, Swisslion are working to bring Ciolek to the front.
Swisslion didn’t make it, these are the riders that matter now! Silvestre managed to latch onto Selig, behind him, there’s a sizeable gap. Willwohl needs to take over soon as Kreder is slowing down a little. Sweeting sprints past everyone on the right-hand side to give his captain in the green jersey an additional leadout. The Volvo train for Ahlstrand is also picking up the pace!
Willwohl moved to the front so quickly that Cavendish briefly lost his wheel. Roelandts and Ahlstrand got caught behind dropping riders, it’s not looking good for them. Manninen and Vanderbiest, left and right to Selig, are currently the fastest riders in this group!
Cavendish and Holloway go into the wind at virtually the same time and speed! But it’s the riders a row behind them that are currently the fastest. From the top of the road to the bottom:
Manninen
Wippert
Lutsyshyn
Vanderbiest
Enger
Still 700 meters to go!
Closer to the line, Holloway and Vanderbiest are in front, but it looks like anyone’s race for the taking. Lutsyshyn, Enger,
Selig and Roelandts are still going strong, the latter now his team’s best hope with Ahlstrand too far behind.
Vanderbiest and Lutsyshyn lead this very equal group! But who will win it? Or can someone else still beat them?
Vanderbiest takes it! What a strong finish by the Frenchman, who also moves up to second overall! Lutsyshyn is the runner-up and Enger denies Holloway a podium and more importantly the yellow jersey! He gets to keep the green one, though. Manninen completes the Top 5. Cavendish faded massively in the final two-hundred metres and only finishes ninth, just ahead of a probably similarly disappointed Ahlstrand.
