Stage 3
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/00.jpg

A similar stage to yesterday: two intermediate and a mountain sprint, albeit in a different order, and again, we’re looking at the mountain jersey and the overall classification – next to the stage win, of course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Nikolcevic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Hänninen enter the day with 5, 3 and 1 mountain points each, but if none of them manages to be part of the breakaway, we might be looking at a tie breaker for the mountain jersey, as no more points will be distributed over the final two stages.

We also have three sprinters who could acquire the yellow jersey to wear it in tomorrow’s time trial. After yesterday’s win, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway only needs any podium spot to take it, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre still have to win the stage to get the overall lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/02.jpg

Speaking of the polkadots: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate is among the first to attack, and as you’ll have spotted already: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Nikolcevic isn’t far off either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/03.jpg

And they both make it along with another familiar face from yesterday, Repsol’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Horton, as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Abraha, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kiskonen and Gate’s teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Porter. Let’s see if the peloton gives this group more leeway than yesterday’s.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/05.jpg

We’ve seen this twice already before: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Horton wins the intermediate sprint, the first of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate misses out on additional bonus seconds, but his 11th overall may be the reason why they’re kept on a short leash again. The gap fluctuates between two and two and a half minutes but doesn’t increase further.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate sat at the back of the group the entire day, presumably to conserve energy for this moment – but he’s still caught off guard as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Abraha is the first to accelerate towards the mountain sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Nikolcevic also isn’t in prime position, but remember, he only needs one point to take the classification!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Horton proves his superior acceleration once more as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Abraha is slowing down. This could open the door for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Nikolcevic!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/09.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Abraha holds on! No points for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Nikolcevic. But he’s the better time trialist and already leads Horton by half a minute in the GC. This might still be enough for him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Jayco disappoints and can’t take advantage of their numbers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Horton adds another one to his collection, but this time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate is attentive! Four bonus seconds bring him up to provisional fifth overall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/13.jpg

Except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Porter, who fell behind after the last sprint, this group has been much more resilient than the one from yesterday. Still, they eventually do get caught. More than 10 kilometres left for the teams to prepare for the sprint and already we see the jerseys of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png McCormick and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk at the front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/15.jpg

Kraftwerk has the most visible sprint train indeed, this time very well-structured with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kreder, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen follows them closely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway in green is already very close to the front with only one man in front of him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn follow his path.

Volvo’s train got a little scattered with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand at the very bottom trying to find pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts’ wheel, who in turn has two more Volvo riders ahead of him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek, one of yesterday’s biggest disappointments, tries to get into a better position, but he’s only the second Swisslion rider in this picture with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Groselj being the one behind Manninen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/16.jpg

Kraftwerk’s train is still going strong with 3 kilometres left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway has only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Francovic left in front but all the more rivals behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Wippert found Manninen’s wheel on the left side of the road with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig close behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand has reconnected with his teammates. Behind him, Swisslion are working to bring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/17.jpg

Swisslion didn’t make it, these are the riders that matter now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre managed to latch onto pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig, behind him, there’s a sizeable gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl needs to take over soon as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kreder is slowing down a little. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Sweeting sprints past everyone on the right-hand side to give his captain in the green jersey an additional leadout. The Volvo train for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand is also picking up the pace!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl moved to the front so quickly that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish briefly lost his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand got caught behind dropping riders, it’s not looking good for them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest, left and right to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig, are currently the fastest riders in this group!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway go into the wind at virtually the same time and speed! But it’s the riders a row behind them that are currently the fastest. From the top of the road to the bottom:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Wippert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger
Still 700 meters to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/20.jpg

Closer to the line, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest are in front, but it looks like anyone’s race for the taking. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger,
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts are still going strong, the latter now his team’s best hope with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand too far behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn lead this very equal group! But who will win it? Or can someone else still beat them?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E3/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest takes it! What a strong finish by the Frenchman, who also moves up to second overall! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn is the runner-up and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger denies pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway a podium and more importantly the yellow jersey! He gets to keep the green one, though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen completes the Top 5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish faded massively in the final two-hundred metres and only finishes ninth, just ahead of a probably similarly disappointed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand.
