Stage 2
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/00.jpg

We’re looking at the first road stage of this year’s (or any, really) Tour of Uppsala. A couple of things to note: In addition to today’s mountain sprint, we only have one more, another Cat 4 on tomorrow’s stage. Winning the points today could already mean winning the jersey all the way. Also: Two of the top sprinters, Valio’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen and Berg Cycle’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre are within 20 seconds of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ludvigsson’s overall lead and could take yellow with a stage win. With all that in mind, let’s get into the action!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Nikolcevic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Zekavica are the first to attack today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/03.jpg

A lot of riders try to join them, but wave after wave gets reeled back in by the peloton until three riders finally manage to get away and catch up. They are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Horton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate and Nikolcevic’s teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png van Schip. They quickly get out to a two-minute lead – the break of the day!

Gate is the best-placed in the GC, 22 seconds back. A couple of seconds from the intermediate sprints could see him rise into or close to the Top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/05.jpg

It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Horton who takes the bonus points and seconds closely followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Nikolcevic. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Van Schip loses contact a little and you can see the peloton not too far away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/06.jpg

They’re still only two minutes behind, because several teams are keeping the pace up. None has more than one rider constantly at the front, but they’re all working very well together. Many teams want to ensure a sprint finish today. Will the break make it at least to the next intermediate and the mountain sprint?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/08.jpg

With the peloton getting closer and closer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Horton tries to leave his companions behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Nikolcevic counters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/09.jpg

Everything’s back together just in time for the next sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Horton takes it again in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Zekavica, who overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Nikolcevic with a late push. With 8 bonus seconds, Gates jumps close to or maybe into the Top 10 overall, pending bonus seconds and placements from today’s finish as well as milliseconds from the time trial.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/10.jpg

Trying to secure the mountain jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Nikolcevic attacks now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Van Schip can’t follow, neither can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Horton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Zekavica. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate catches up, and so a duo remains. But 7 kilometres from the mountain sprint, the peloton is only 45 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/12.jpg

The attack was enough to hold the pack off just a little longer. Without much of a fight, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lvc.png Nikolcevic takes the maximum amount of points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate just tries to hold on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/13.jpg

Their former breakaway colleagues have been caught already so it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Hänninen who gets the final point as he leads the peloton over that line with the duo up front already in sight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/15.jpg

The two had been caught shortly after, so it’s been about 40 kilometres of sprint preparation – what a luxury. McCormick for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway and Kraftwerk for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish have been at the front of the pack for most of the time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/16.jpg

3 kilometres to go and McCormick are playing this beautifully – if they’re not going too early, that is. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Gaimon just dropped out and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Francovic leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Sweeting with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway right behind him. He’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand.

There’s a bit of a gap behind them, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen are closest, let’s see who can catch up!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kreder blows past everyone on the right side of the road and his captain jumps on his wheel! The McCormick train is still intact with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Sweeting about to take over, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish is now right next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway, but with 2 kilometres left, this seems early for the Manx Missile.

The aforementioned trio made contact, but behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen there’s a gap to the rest of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/18.jpg

Under the flamme rouge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish is still in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kreder’s slipstream – it’s another Kraftwerk rider in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl who tries to jump to the front on their left. He’s fast, but he’s also already spent a lot of energy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Sweeting is done and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway dashes to the front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand still firmly on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest already seems to want to go for it all, accelerating in the middle of the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen are still trying to catch up. No other rider seems to have any shot for the win at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway has the inside track on this nasty corner towards the finish line. Can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand jump past him? Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest tries to squeeze between Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand is the fastest, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway has more than a bike length on him! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest looks to be fading already, as is the trio on the left side of the road (Willwohl, Sweeting, Kreder). Can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish hold on for second, or even find another gear and attack?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand gives it everything he‘s got and draws level with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish. Can he make it back-to-back Swedish victories? Behind them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig is the fastest, trying to catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/22.jpg

No back-to-back! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway tops off a masterpiece of a sprint preparation for McCormick with an impressive victory! He also climbs to fourth in the GC!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Uppsala/E2/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger over the line to take fifth place and four domestiques actually complete the Top 11 before any other sprinter reaches the line – that’s how dominant McCormick and Kraftwerk were today. But while Kraftwerk worked mostly with quantity and a bit of chaos, McCormick’s calculated performance pays off!
