Tour of Uppsala
--
Stage 1
We have a short prologue to start the very first Tour of Uppsala. There’s a a sneaky tough ascent towards the end, around 600 meters between 5 and 8 percent before it plateaus towards the finish line. We’ll see if that has any tangible impact.
Emilien Viennet has chosen a very early start and sets the first benchmark. Let’s see how long this time holds up. Viennet is one of the top favorites for the overall classification.
7‘13
Dylan Van Baarle might have had ambitions today, but he can’t come that close to Viennet – seven seconds behind.
7‘20
Next up is Viennet’s teammate Andrew Tennant, who also doesn’t do all that well, slower than Van Baarle. You can get an impression of the slope here.
7‘24
Samuel Pokälä on the other hand almost takes the lead! He’s only fractions of a second short – maybe an indication that uphill skills do matter to some extent today.
7‘14
Wen Hao Li finishes in the vacinity of Tennant, which places him seventh, currently. He, too, has to stand up to reach the top of the mini-climb.
7‘23
Miles Olman questions the notion of any sort of hill or mountain stat mattering – as he has neither and still turns in a solid time.
7‘21
Upset alert! I may have to take that back already! Jacob Salcone takes an entirely unexpected lead, just milliseconds faster than Viennet!
7‘13
The next of cycleYorkshire’s time trialing battalion, Ian Stannard, doesn’t reach his full potential here. He’s just behind his teammate Tennant.
7‘26
Rakuten is on a roll! The next best-time comes from Pierre Rolland!
7‘12
At this point, Olman may just be an anomaly, and some kind of climbing skill does seem necessary: Marcel Kittel fails to make any impact whatsoever!
7’27
Ligthard, though, still manages to jump into the preliminary Top 10.
7’20
How will all this affect the top favorite and world champ, you ask? Not in the slightest! Relative to the length of this stage, Jerome Coppel’s six seconds of advantage are an eternity!
7’06
Alas, it still only lasted for a little while! Tobias Ludvigson adds another five to that and almost breaks the seven-minute barrier! The crowd goes wild!
7’00
Australian Champion Luke Durbridge joins the ranks of favorites that fail to meet expectations today. This won’t even be a Top 20 result.
7’23
Same for Haugaard ...
7’23
... and teammate Campenaerts. But Volvo still has the leading man, of course.
7’22
Meanwhile, not captured by the inattentive camera crew, a couple of riders did well for themselves:
Oleksandr Golovash jumps onto the provisional podium!
7’11
Matti Manninen also turns in a solid time, and with 14 seconds off the lead, he’d be in position to take yellow with a stage win tomorrow.
7’14
The same applies for Fabio Silvestre, who’s just 16 seconds behind Ludvigsson.
7’16
And Lucas Schädlich slips into the Top 10 …
7’15
... while Mikhail Ignatiev just barely misses it.
7’16
Proving once more that climbing is an appreciated skill here, Vadim Ratiy provides the last major surprise of the day and finishes provisional second! And that’s going to be final second as well, as no other rider makes any meaningful impact afterwards.
7’05
A weird day comes to a close with a surprising winner – the local crowd loves it! – and a lot of disappointed faces. Of the original favorites, Coppel, Golovash and Viennet come through somewhat unscathed while Durbridge and Kittel suffer most.
