Vuelta al País Vasco

Stage 6 – Eibar - Arrate 119.4 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/00.jpg

The 6th and final stage of this year’s edition of Vuelta al País Vasco is the traditional Arrate stage with the legendary climb in Eibar. Clearly the hardest finish of the tour and we can expect huge time differences that might easily shuffle the top 10 we got now.

It is clouded with the temperature at 14°C, wind at 3-6 km/h.

Reminder of top 10

Virtual KoM

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/03.jpg

Those 14 riders join forces before we start the 2nd KoM sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas takes it in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Wohrer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Schädlich dropped after the 2nd KoM, losing a minute over the next 3 km before we start the ascent the the third cat.3.

In the meantime Schädlich overtaking by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Paulus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Bevin coming up from the pack. Further back another 6 riders have distanced the pack with more than a minute, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Skujins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Eyob, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Shushemoin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Brozyna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Phelan

The pack have been a lot faster lately, trying to keep track of the constant attacks now at 2’27”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas also takes the third cat.3 KoM this time in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schlegel

Virtual KoM

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/05.jpg

Over the next 13 km, the long downhill and the last cat.3 the leading group reduced to 7 riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Belgasem, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schlegel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Wohrer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Moazemi

They got 47” to group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Skujins/pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Flügel, pack at 1’42.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schlegel takes the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/06.jpg

On the section leading up to the cat.2 we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Cerny, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Boros, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kalaba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Bouet and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Vermote most active in the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Wohrer takes the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Belgasem and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schlegel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/07.jpg

On the downhill and the flat after the KoM the pursuit with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Skujins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Flügel was reeled in by the pack, now only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Paulus hanging between the leading 7 riders and the bunch, 63 riders at 1’55”

Virtual KoM after the Cat.2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/08.jpg

We get to the cat.1, in the breakaway pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou opens early to scake of his competitors but can’t get rid of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Wohrer

In the pack first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Moscon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Janse van Rensburg and finally the strong pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Mohoric, pushes very hard dropping rider after rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Wohrer takes the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou.
38 seconds later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas 3nd over the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Belgasem, another 40 seconds and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna who has attacked from the pack passes in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schlegel and a few seconds later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Moazemi

Those 7 are the only riders in front of the pack as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Paulus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev have both been reeled in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/09.jpg

The climb cut the pack to 26 riders, but on the downhill it is back to 40.
Some important rider are far behind, GC5th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Paillot at 5’40, GC9th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Dyball at 3’37 with four teammates including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Di Maggio at 3’56, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Gebrezgabihier at 7’39.

Again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Wohrer first over the last KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/10.jpg

Pack at 3’23
Virtual KoM:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/11.jpg

Four riders left in front of the pack, up front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Wohrer together with 2’15 to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Belgasem another 55” to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas, pack at 3’45 when they pass over the KoM.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas reeled when the leading duo has 14 km to the finish line.

It is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Janse van Rensburg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Dall'Oste, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Rosskopf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Mohoric pulling on the downhill and the flat leading up to the final climb.

With a little less than 5 km to the line, pack at 3’36”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/12.jpg

There is some hesitation in the bunch at the first km of the final climb, the group grows to 71 riders, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Salinas takes control and start pushing harder, right behind him now race leaders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran

In front the duo, at 2’04 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Belgasem, pack at 2’49, 2.7 km left for the stage leaders. Slopes from 13 to 14.5 % at these sections.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/13.jpg

Over the next 400 meter the peloton cut the distance to 2’08 reeling in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Belgasem

Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran’s attack form a pursuit of 9 riders, the others are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Salinas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Van Garderen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Zardini

They are now quite close to the leading duo, 2 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/15.jpg

1.3 km left and the breakaway over. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink have taken the lead of the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/16.jpg

Very surprising on a profile like this it comes to a very close sprint between 6 riders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink win on Arrate in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan takes the last podium

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou 4th really getting something from his breakaway efforts today, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png De Bie 5th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita 6th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Zardini 7th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Wohrer 8th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Salinas 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Van Garderen 10th

The first 10 riders all get the same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S6/18.jpg

The result as expected create a lot of changes in the GC, Gesink and Beltran untouchable as 1st and 2nd, but Tomohiro Kinoshita takes the last podium moving up from 4th.

Edoardo Zardini moves from 8th to 5th, Tejay Van Garderen from 10th to 7th, Sean De Bie from 15th to 8th, Peter Sagan from 16th to 9th, Yuriy Vasyliv from 12th to 10th.

With today’s stage win Robert Gesink also took the points, Andrei Sakalou took the KoM fantastic stage from him, Yevgeniy Gidich won U25 and Aegon – Lavazza took the team classification.
