The 5th stage is an another semi mountain stage, with the last summit 14 km from the finish line, the profile might end in a reduced mass sprint, or maybe more likely a sprint between a smaller group of punchy riders opening a gap on the last climb.
It is clouded with the temperature at 12°C, wind at 4-6 km/h.
Reminder of top 10
1 Gesink9h24'30 2 Beltran+ 1'07 3 Kung+ 2'05 4 Brändle+ 2'45 5 Stüssi+ 3'03 6 Paillot+ 3'05 7 Bibby+ 3'06 8 Kinoshita+ 3'16 9 Zardini+ 3'29 10 Dyball+ 3'54
The Race
Dowsett with the first acceleration in front of Paulus.
This was just the beginning, constant attacks continue all the way up to in first sprint. We got 22 riders passing the sprint together, at 1’21” another one, the pack at 3’26 after 40 km.
Won’t go through everyone in the breakaway at this point, but mention a few more interesting riders we got on the move today.
Most interesting in KoM Zordan and Laas both with 16 points and Le Gac with 6 points.
No real threat to U25, best young rider in the breakaway Bagioli 25th 15’12 behind the U25 leader.
Best in GC Flügel 51th at 9’33. Other notable riders would be Ben Nasser, Palini, Quevedo, Vakoc and Waeytens
There is no fight over the points sprint.
Over the period between the two point sprints, we have seen the following riders working in the pack Boom, Dumoulin, Boros, Cheung and
Boonratanathanakorn
There was no fight over the 2nd sprint either. Pack now at 2’45 with 80 km left. It has started to rain.
The breakaway get to the first KoM, Laas attack from 1.5 km with Zordan at wheel.
A good move by Zordan as Laas can’t get rid of him and he passes just in time to win the KoM
Peloton at 3’15”
Hats off to Kochetkov, Schädlich, Allegaert, Biermans and Wohler, they did what they could today, but this climb was too hard and they will never rejoin the breakaway, we are down to 18 riders in the leading group.
Virtual KoM
On the uncategorized climb between the two KoM’s the pack really start to turn up the pace, van der Hugenhaben, Riesebeek, Tarvis working very hard, and even Kinoshita taking some very hard turns.
The pack splits reducing the leading group to 41 riders, the most prominent victims Bobridge, Calmejane and van der Hugenhaben who was working just a few Km back.
The eighteen riders in the breakaway reach the foot of the 2nd KoM with 1’24 to the favorite group. 18.6 km left. Immediately as the sloped get hard first Edet and then Duchesne was dropped.
From the pack a move by Van Garderen, Mohoric and Skujins have closed the gap to Duchesne now 22” in front of the other favorites
With 2.5 km to the top attack from Zordan from the breakaway, Flügel, Palini, Vakoc and Ben Nasser quick to respond.
Van Garderen, Mohoric and Skujins gets contact with the larger breakaway group.
But soon more riders drop from this group, Marczynski, Le Gac, Dowsett, van Zyl, Kireva and a little later Vanendert
Ben Nasser drop from the leading group and is replaced by Laas attacking from the 2nd group
Up front attack from Zordan.
Zordan takes the KoM, 22” later ,
Flügel, Vakoc, Palini,
Laas next another 15” behind.
This is a full overview of the times as Zordan passes the summit, 14.5 km left mostly downhill:
At: 25” Vakoc, Flügel, Palini, Laas
At 42”:
Van Garderen, Mohoric, Skujins, Quevedo, Waeytens, Paulus and Bagioli
At 1’55”: Ben Nasser
At 2’19” Favorite group (31 riders) with Gesink, De Bie, Lutsenko, Sagan, Kinoshita, Beltran, Brändle, Trofimov, Bibby, Klemme, Stüssi, Paillot, Dyball
At 3’10 8 riders with: Bobridge and Prevar
At 3’34 9 riders with Di Maggio Calmejane and Kung
Virtual KoM
Vakoc, Flügel and Palini is getting closer to Zordan cutting the distance to 13” as Zordan passes the 10km banner about half way down from the climb.
In the favorite group attack from Gesink and Beltran
Zordan was caught by the pursuit with 5.4 km to the line, they got a lead of 54” staring the sprint. Vakoc the only one having a serious sprint left and without much competition wins in Bilbao.
Palini 2nd in front of Zordan 3rd and Flügel 4th these four in the same time
In the meantime Gesink and Beltran was reeled back into the favorite group.
In the pursuit Van Garderen attacks from a distance, coming first under the red kite.
Mohoric cleverly patient on Skujins wheel and that pays out, he comes 5th in front of Van Garderen 6th and Skujins 7th. They come in at 1'11”
Very close between Gallopin for 8th and Lutsenko 9th, behind them Sagan 10th in a group of 30 riders at 1’48”
In GC a few changes in top 20, previously 3nd Stefan Kung lost 3'59, falling to 13th, making room for Matthias Brändle at the podium. Taking time on most rivals Tejay Van Garderen moved up from 16th to 10th. Pierre Rolland +5'15 and Josue Gonzalez Cortes + 3'59 both dropped out of top 20 making room for Tanel Kangert as 19th and Alexey Lutsenko as 20th.
Peter Sagan new points leader, Florian Scheit keeps the KoM lead, new U25 leader Yevgeniy Gidich and Aegon – Lavazza back in the team lead.
