Vuelta al País Vasco

Stage 5 Donostia – Bilbao 174.1 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S5/00.jpg

The 5th stage is an another semi mountain stage, with the last summit 14 km from the finish line, the profile might end in a reduced mass sprint, or maybe more likely a sprint between a smaller group of punchy riders opening a gap on the last climb.

It is clouded with the temperature at 12°C, wind at 4-6 km/h.

The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Dowsett with the first acceleration in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Paulus.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S5/01.jpg

This was just the beginning, constant attacks continue all the way up to in first sprint. We got 22 riders passing the sprint together, at 1’21” another one, the pack at 3’26 after 40 km.

Won’t go through everyone in the breakaway at this point, but mention a few more interesting riders we got on the move today.

Most interesting in KoM pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas both with 16 points and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Le Gac with 6 points.

No real threat to U25, best young rider in the breakaway pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Bagioli 25th 15’12 behind the U25 leader.

Best in GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Flügel 51th at 9’33. Other notable riders would be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Quevedo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Vakoc and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens

There is no fight over the points sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S5/02.jpg

Over the period between the two point sprints, we have seen the following riders working in the pack pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Boom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Dumoulin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Boros, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Cheung and
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Boonratanathanakorn

There was no fight over the 2nd sprint either. Pack now at 2’45 with 80 km left. It has started to rain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S5/03.jpg

The breakaway get to the first KoM, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas attack from 1.5 km with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan at wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S5/04.jpg

A good move by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas can’t get rid of him and he passes just in time to win the KoM

Peloton at 3’15”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S5/05.jpg

Hats off to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Kochetkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Schädlich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Allegaert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Biermans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Wohler, they did what they could today, but this climb was too hard and they will never rejoin the breakaway, we are down to 18 riders in the leading group.

Virtual KoM

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S5/06.jpg

On the uncategorized climb between the two KoM’s the pack really start to turn up the pace, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Hugenhaben, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Tarvis working very hard, and even pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita taking some very hard turns.

The pack splits reducing the leading group to 41 riders, the most prominent victims pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Hugenhaben who was working just a few Km back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S5/07.jpg

The eighteen riders in the breakaway reach the foot of the 2nd KoM with 1’24 to the favorite group. 18.6 km left. Immediately as the sloped get hard first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Edet and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne was dropped.

From the pack a move by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Mohoric and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Skujins have closed the gap to Duchesne now 22” in front of the other favorites

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S5/09.jpg

With 2.5 km to the top attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan from the breakaway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Flügel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Vakoc and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser quick to respond.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S5/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Mohoric and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Skujins gets contact with the larger breakaway group.

But soon more riders drop from this group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Marczynski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Le Gac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Dowsett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png van Zyl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kireva and a little later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Vanendert

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser drop from the leading group and is replaced by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas attacking from the 2nd group

Up front attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S5/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan takes the KoM, 22” later ,

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Flügel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Vakoc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini,

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas next another 15” behind.
