The 4th stage is an ITT taking place in and around Eibar, a hard profile starting out with an about 5km steep hill up to the first time check, from there downhill and a flat section before the 2nd check and then flat up to the finish.
Sunny with the temperature at 19°C, and almost no wind.
Reminder of top 20 and important skills for this stage.

The Race
Laizer opens the race setting the first time after the uphill section at 18’29, Laizer is quite a good tempo rider but neither a puncher nor a climber this profile seem to be too hard for him.
He crosses the finish line in 42’06” at this point already 6th at the climber check.
Many unimportant riders will take new best not none of them with a good combination of uphill and ITT skill’s, until we get Dees, (15’05 - 26’42) Full time 38’55”
Just a moment later teammate Oliveira in the same time. (+7” - +2” - 38’55”)
Hadi just at +2” after the uphill section and set new best at the downhill sector 26’40”, but loses some at the flat coming in with 3rd best +5”
Roe new best at all three sectors, 14’52 – 26’31 and new best full time 38’41”
Senni 2nd best at the uphill sector at +2”, and after the downhill new best 26’23, but loses on the flat coming in at the same time as Roe 38’41”
Vasyliv with new best at all sectors, 14’42 – 26’18 – 38’40
Now we only got top 20 left, and this is the situation:
Lutsenko loses 1’38” probably too much to stay in GC top 20.
Scheit is not known for his skills as a tempo rider and it shows, coming in with a loss of 3’19”
Prevar not much better +2’46”
Goh should be better at this and he is +1’06 not too bad.
Bratashcuk quite a bad tempo rider and he will also lose a lot in GC with a +2’53” time
Trofimov a much better tempo rider and with +19 after the uphill section we may get a fine time. +20 after the 2nd sector and full time 5th +18”, a fine race from him.
Right behind Trofimov also Dyball fast, +11” after the uphill sector, 14” after the downhill and a very strong finish for 4th at +9”
Van Garderen not as good at this discipline, 1’02” is ok but he may lose a little in GC depending on what others can do.
Sagan not a tempo rider either, but just as Van Garderen his uphill skill save him somewhat +1’20”, let’s see might lose a little in GC
Gallopin on paper a better tempo rider, but the uphill was hard on him with a +1’09” after the uphill sector.
He saves some of that on the downhill/flat and comes in with +1’13”
Paillot a very strong tempo rider, he loses 57” uphill, but with a splendid finish come in as 10th with +26”, that may well be enough to improve his GC.
The producer missed the time checks from Stüssi, he came in 10th at +25”, a great result from him.
At this point Gesink has set new best first sector 14’17”
De Bie should do quite well but it was not his day, already at 1’56” after the uphill sector and finishing 67th at +1’39, he will drop some slots in GC.
Brändle a top TT rider with some punch and a good climber too, +48” after the uphill sector, and with a supreme finish 4th at full time +8”
At this point Gesink have set new best 2nd sector 25’52”
Bibby 19th after the uphill +50”, 17th after 2 sectors and full time 13th at 32”, got a good mix of ability’s for this so might be just a bit disappointing.
Kinoshita a top puncher but not the best tempo rider, 32th after the uphill at 1’06” and finishing 41th at 1’13”, he will drop some positions in GC.
Zardini with +1’08 uphill, that is not too bad, he is not the best tempo rider, an ok downhill to 2nd time check 41th at 1’22”, but loses of the flat finish, full time 63th +1’31”, he will drop some positions in GC.
GC 3rd Kung a fine tempo rider, not the strongest uphill though. He loses 1’24” uphill, but takes something back at the downhill section 27th at 1’13” and with a brilliant last sector finish 17th at 38”. That is enough to keep him at podium position.
GC 2nd Beltran not the best tempo rider and may lose a lot on the last two sectors. His uphill skills shows he is 2nd after the first sector at +15, also with a good downhill ability again 2nd after the descent, and though dropping to 9th at the flat finish more than enough to stay 2nd in GC.
We already know that Gesink was first after two sectors, and he completely smash the stage with a full time 37'59”, winning the stage with 41” down to Yuriy Vasyliv, to cement the race lead with now 1'07” to Eduard Alexander Beltran.
With the GC podium unchanged best placed “jumper” was Matthias Brändle moving up from 7th to 4th. Also Colin Stüssi now 5th and Yoann Paillot now 6th improved a lot from this stage.
Winning today Robert Gesink also took the points lead, and his team the team lead.
Nico Denz new U25 leader.
