Vuelta al País Vasco

Stage 3 Eibar – Aia 155.1 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/00.jpg

The 3rd stage of this year’s Vuelta al País Vasco, and another day in the Basque Mountains, we got a series of early short climbs followed by a longer cat.1 mid-stage.
A difficult finish with three peak’s on the last 20 km, and uphill finish will surely create some interesting gaps today.

The weather report says sunny with the temperature at 18°C, and almost no wind.

The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Kochetkov opens, soon to be followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Christensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Di Maggio

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/01.jpg

In the pack we see especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Eyob working hard to chase down the breakaway.

The aggressive riding by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Eyob results in a split where 9 riders start pursuing as a 2nd break, the pack seemingly not willing to burn calories this early.

Besides Eyob we got, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Bagioli
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan, in this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Di Maggio attacks from 1.2 km and takes the early KoM, pack at 2’21”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/03.jpg

The distance grow further, it is 4’36” when the breakaway fights for the 2nd KoM.
There has been no early attack this time it is all about the last few 100 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan fastest in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Le Gac

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/04.jpg

The distance stays above 4 minutes, as the breakaway approach the 3rd KoM, this time a more important cat. 2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou opens from 2 km, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna at wheel and the duo work together opening about 30” to the pursuit. Near the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan counters and reach McKenna, but it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou passing the top first.

Virtual KoM:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/06.jpg

The pack has upped the pace a little and the distance begins to melt. 3’44 then the breakaway starts today’s hardest climb cat.1 “Alto de Urraki”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit attack from a little less than 2 km, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou able or willing to keep up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit powering all the way to the top with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou clued, but never able to pass, maybe not that important for him right now, as he moved into the KoM lead.

Virtual KoM:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/08.jpg

Over the top, first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Christensen later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Bagioli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Kochetkov was dropped, they will never get back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna attacks for the Cat.2 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cahyadi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit clued, also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Di Maggio accelerates from the group a few meters back, 600 meters to the top, pack at 1’44”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit wins in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Di Maggio

With this pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit moved into the KoM lead with 30 points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Di Maggio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou shared 2nd with 22 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/10.jpg

After this we get a points sprint, then a relative easy but long climb and another points sprint.
Although the sprints do not seem to be that important at this point, the breakaway sprint hard over both of them. The first goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna, the 2nd pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cahyadi in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/11.jpg

In the meantime first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Hofstede, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Di Maggio was dropped

The pace also very hard in the pack and also here riders dropping all the time. This is an overview of the situation close to the top of the uncategorized climb between the two sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/12.jpg

Back to the present development, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit attack from about 1 km on the Cat.2, no one can keep up and he passes alone with 17” down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou, cementing his koM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/13.jpg

From here only the last cat.2 and the uphill finish, the hard climb was too much for what was left of the breakaway, with 2.8 km left to the top of the cat.2 the breakaway was over. Two short but hard uphill sections left over the final just 7.4 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/14.jpg

2.2 km to the top of the cat.2, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran attacks, he passes the top with 39” to the favorite group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran has great legs today extending his lead in the final climb up to the finish line, he can raise his arms in victory with 200 meters left and nobody in sight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink attacks from the 2nd group from about 1.5 km, he comes in 2nd at 46”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita wins the sprint in the third group to take the last podium in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan 4th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S3/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Van Garderen loses a few meters, but rounds of top 5 in the same time +1'04”

With this Robert Gesink leads the GC with Eduard Alexander Beltran at 7”, Stefan Kung 3rd at 46”

Peter Sagan lead the points and Florian Scheit new KoM leader.
Michal Schlegel leads the U25 and Aegon – Lavazza the team classification
