Vuelta al País Vasco

Stage 2 Vitoria-Gasteiz – Lesaka 160.5 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/0.jpg

The 2nd stage of this year’s Vuelta al País Vasco takes place in the Basque Mountains, some hard climbing at mid-stage, but with a relative easy finish after two more hilly climbs.

The weather has changes from sun to clouds, and the temperature has dropped to 14°C, but almost no wind.

Let’s first take a look at some riders of interest.

The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Katrasnik opens the stage as the flag drops, at his wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Zariff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthart

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/01.jpg

Still in Vitoria-Gasteiz, also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Wohler attacks and a little later also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Caruso, then, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Kenyeres and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Hofstede, and finally pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Balloni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Shushemoin escapes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/02.jpg

While these 10 riders get a gap of more than two minutes quite fast, we get an unexpected acceleration in the pack, this time with top puncher pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Flügel (49th at 48’), the others are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Skujins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Hermans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Phelan

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/03.jpg

This move was too dangerous, now the pack pursuing very hard, after 15 km the gap to group Flügel just 13” and the original 10 riders 50”, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Zordan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Flügel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser won’t let it rest and while the other three was reeled in the go for it again.

On the uphill section leading up to the first point sprint and later the KoM, the fight is extreme with more attacks and constant high pace, so will not mention every move just that also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan (GC 176, 2’20” and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko (GC 38, 17”) have left the pack behind.

This is the picture, pack at 2’45”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser wins the points sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthart and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/05.jpg

The first 24 riders join to form a huge breakaway but soon pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Balloni was dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Phelan attacks the KoM from 2.4 km, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Katrasnik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas takes the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek.

Group Lutsenko at 43”, pack at 1’39”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/06.jpg

Over the first 10 km of the long descent, the pack hunt relentlessly, finaly a group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov brigde the gap to group Lutsenko, leaving the pack 53” behind.

With no absolutely dangerous riders in front of the favorites, the pace drop and within the next 2-3 km the pack joins up from behind, we only got three riders left in front of the pack, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Katrasnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas attack for the KoM right from the bottom, completely splitting the trio with more than 5 km to the top of the Cat. 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/07.jpg

With the pack coming closer and closer pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas fights like mad to get to the KoM first, he makes it just in time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/08.jpg

Next is the cat.1 KoM, a united peloton passes and the KoM was won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Konrad, now shared KoM leader with Laas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/09.jpg

Then it is the final points sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan sprint for it and wins in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Pons, the only other rider trying.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Powless takes the next KoM, and from there the pack is completely dominated by Generali the team shared the remaining KoM climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/11.jpg

Seemingly more by luck than intension from the team, it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Rosskopf getting most of the points; he will become overnight KoM leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/12.jpg

All the way down we still has 5-6 Generali riders leading the pack. We hit the bottom with exactly 3 km left, and that must have been marked with an X on Moser – Sygic’s route map, because in the exacy moment pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna flies to the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan clued.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/13.jpg

Generali fight back, keeping up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna over the next km, even blocking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan a little while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink grap Sagan’s wheel.

None of the other top punchers have made a move so far, and surprisingly most sitting quite far back, the only not mentioned sitting between the first 25 riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita, but most are ok placed some 15-20 riders further back. Worst placed are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Mohoric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Flügel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Prevar in that order, sitting in the rear of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/14.jpg

Another km goes by and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan have found McKenna’s wheel again, for some reason pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink have fallen back behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Kung and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Rosskopf

Now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko have moved forward to approx. 18th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna first under the red kite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/15.jpg

400 meters left.
Still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Kung and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink

On the right side of Gesink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Rosskopf, on his left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Oliveira

At the left side of Oliveira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran, in next row pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Dees to the left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Brown to the right.

In next row at the far left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Konrad slightly in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Bibby, behind Konrad pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita and at his left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kangert.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/16.jpg

200 meters left
McKenna swung of, now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan leads far right in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Kung

Left of the middle pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran in third position. In fourth position behind Kung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Rosskopf.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita have been fast over the last 200 meters, now in fourth position at the far left, at his right side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Bibby.

Then three Generali riders at Bibby right rear, from left to right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Oliveira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Gesink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Brown

9 position is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge at the wheel of Kinoshita. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kangert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Konrad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Mutsumine, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Dees all close for 10th position, behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/17.jpg

Quite a clear win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan in Lesaka, with plenty of time to celebrate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Kung 2nd

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran takes the last podium in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Bibby

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Rosskopf round of top 5

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita 6th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Kangert rounds of top 10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pvas/S2/24.jpg

With this result Generali still leads the race, now Stefan Kung in front of Joey Rosskopf and Nelson Oliveira

Peter Sagan took the points lead and Joey Rosskopf the KoM

Best young rider Odd Christian Eiking and team leader still Generali
