The hardest stage comes first up in this race as the peloton will cover numerous hills and cobbled sections. Over the years, this stage has been the most influential in deciding who wins this race. Let's see if it turns out to be the same this time too.

Ominous clouds loom overhead as the starting flag is dropped and we get underway.
It takes some time, and a couple of attempts before the break of the day is established. Interestingly, it is a very strong group that has been allowed to get away, consisting of strong cobbles riders and a couple of good punchers:

Breen, Laporte, Cominelli and Broers are among those further back on the road. This race hasn't started off well for them.

Ferreiara suffers a puncture with 68 km left
Vanspeybrouck is in trouble, having been dropped from the chase group. He's with the next group on the road.
Ferreira catches up to the break just before the second intermediate sprint and has enough in the tank to win it! Orue and Albert come through next.

Today's winner - Danny Summerhill.
An incredible stage with a predictable winner. But that hardly tells the story of today! Summerhill the deserved winner but Ferreira's breakaway exploits give him the joint lead in the GC! The latter also leads the Points Standings. Orue's great ride to 6th comfortably gives him U25 leadership. Andorra are the best team overnight. The breakaway turned into a lucrative move for most of it's members!
Huge damage done to some of the GC contenders, with Stallaert the worst hit, losing nearly 39 minutes! But that is just among the finishers. Only 61 riders made the time limit in this ruthless stage, with a lot of the sprinters and the TT specialists eliminated even before they got a chance to showcase their talent.
