Stage 4 likely leads to the decision as it`s the 2nd and final hill top finish with only a flat stage following tomorrow.
The first duel of the top puncheurs here on Bluff Hill went to Di Maggio, who did beat Claeys on the line. Several others though in reach to challenge them still with a better day 4. Schreurs, Borges, Vakoc, Gautier, Betancourt, Jensen to name the biggest threats.
5 in todays break and two of those from Eddie Stobart trying to find success from the break. And as Umerbekov is a decent puncheur but surprisingly badly placed GC wise, this might be their best chance. He is supported by his team mate Van der Ploeg as also the 3 companions Othman, Schinnagel and Pirazzi. Not the weakest group.
Valio going a huge pace there resulting in a long line in the peloton. Aaltio as flat powerhorse clearly the perfect rider for such high pace and many riders with less strength on the flat really suffer there.
Santos, day 1 winner Stallaert and Ariesen not making it much better as those are also good for long relays on high speed. Van der Haar and Hermans also lining up next but not yet having worked.
Such high pace was continued until close to the finish. The break is caught with 8km to go and never had a chance as they were just going full power without opening a bigger gap than 1-2min maximum. Still 181 riders in the peloton but also still in a long queue and some riders not ideally placed with the uphill starting soon.
4km left and we see couple of well placed puncheurs including the GC leader Di Maggio. Ahead of him Gautier and Jensen.
All the others around him as well. So not looking too bad for the top riders at the moment and all got back to the front in time.
Duolingo and Berg did pace up that hill at first but now the GC riders are taking over.
2,5km to go and Gautier, Schreurs, Jensen are in the lead. Borges, Paulinho, Vogt, Di Maggio + Gebrezgabihier following. Claeys, Bellis and Betancourt as well.
Then a little bit of a gap to Bilbao, Edmondson, Vakoc/Barbin, Duchesne, Hoelgaard, Quevedo, Pichon, Boily.
1,4km and Borges took over. 9th is surely less than he had hoped.
Gautier sitting in his wheel but not looking as good.
Jensen on the other side with Bellis behind him. Also looking tired already. But it might also be due to the steepest section right now.
Schreurs a bit "dropping" next with Claeys coming fast behind Bellis and Vogt, Betancourt next.
Surprisingly some riders that weren`t placed well such as Edmondson, Quevedo, Pichon, Hoelgaard now look well placed with Vakoc as well going better.
One name was missing though. And he is really struggling. Di Maggio is in big problems apparently. Did the pace from the start on the flat make him exhaust before his speciality even started? He is going very slow upwards and in huge threat to lose the GC today.
Next to him Boily, Paulinho ahead of him. All in difficulties.
It even seems as if ENI-MOL allowes Gebrezgabihier to go clear. Surprisingly well placed there as well Manninen, who was Gautier`s helper and right now outclimbing Di Maggio!
Claeys goes into the lead with 1,1km to go. Borges, Gautier and the others behind him.
There clearly is a gap behind the top14 with Manninen and Bilbao following ahead of a group of 7 next, where Di Maggio is the last rider only and ENI-MOL is letting Gebrezgabihier wait again apparently.
The top group with 700m to go and all those that tried to attack seem to suffer now as they can`t open a gap.
Vogt about to get dropped and with Paulinho in group 2 only, this is not ideal for Berg.
6 riders on one line.
Borges-Gautier-Jensen-Pichot-Bellis-Vakoc.
Then Claeys, Schreurs, Betancourt, Quevedo and Edmondson
And the order did not change a lot until the line a bit later. All of them were really exhausted after the short but super fast stage. In the end a surprising win by Pichot! He slowly moved up on the climb and was then the smartest and strongest in the sprint.
Behind him super close first Jensen and then Gautier.
Borges and Bellis miss out on bonus seconds.
Vakoc, Betancourt, Claeys, Schreurs, Quevedo and Edmondson following in later positions.
Vogt the first with a gap losing 12s in the end.
Hoelgaard at 41s, Barbin at 48s and then already Manninen as 15th coming in at 54s together with Bilbao, Duchesne, Trillini, Hermans and Zakarin. Huge effort by the sprinter.
Paulinho just like on Bluff Hill started well but dropped hugely. 1'28 in the end for him. Worse for Boily +2'01 and Di Maggio +2'10 though.
What a way to lose the GC and even a decent GC position at all!
Some teams surely did well today by making him suffer already on the flat as they knew, uphill wouldn`t be easy to beat him.
The GC moves over to Claeys followed by todays winner Pichon and Jensen in 3rd with Betancourt and Gautier following also with a small gap. Di Maggio down to 17th!
