Tour de Langkawi
The race is now moved into the 2nd phase, we are past the first decisive stage and have got a GC contender in the leader jersey, with today’s stage the 2nd of four flat we must again expect a mass sprint but the further we get into the race the more likely a breakaway win. May see the GC contending teams save energy, leaving it to the pure sprinter teams to keep any breakaway under control.
Still hot, first half of the race wind from behind, then a long section with crosswind and finally the last about 30 km riding against the wind, making it easier for the peloton, but with winds at only about 5km/h not too important.
Media favorites :
(Translation: AVG – FL – HI – SP - ACC – STA – RES)
Nielsen open the stage
Marchewka, Quispe and Reus fast to react, not going to miss this early move.
Not long after another acceleration from the pack, it is Kukrle with Weiss clued.
They do not make it but just as they get reeled in, Weiss has a second shot in the barrel and that was enough to get clear as the pack is content with the 5 riders slipping away.
Later we see attempt by first Voinea and Amanuel and later Malecki but the pack will keep it a five man breakaway and close everything down.
The distance grows to about 3’30” with about 110 km left, from there the pack up the pace a bit and it slowly decrease.
Quispe with a great top speed on the flat, also Reus and Weiss good rouleur for a stage like this, that bring some hope that this is not impossible if they all work together right up to the line. The group reaches the points sprint with 2’50” and the fact that they don’t fight for it is a good sign for those hoping for a breakaway win.
Time to take a look at who is working in the pack, won’t mention every rider taking a turn but these are the ones lifting most of the workload after about 75 km left.
Sivakov, Fedeli, Jakobsen
After 50 km we can add: Eenkhoorn, Gamper, Cisse, Joeaar
With 27 km left they have reduced the gap to about a minute, triggering a reaction in the breakaway, the unity fall apart as Weiss try on his own. Hard to say if it is the upcoming point sprint he is after.
It was not the points he was after, he gets caught and the breakaway again passes the sprint without fight.
Now the breakaway is a mess, attacks left and right but to no use as they are quickly brought back, only Nielsen get some distance in a solo move, but not enough.
With 5 km left the breakaway got 23”, but with a little wind right in their faces and a slightly uphill slope hardly enough.
Even though the break is not definitely over, let’s look at the pack instead.
3.8 km left for the pack: Berard leading. Moser just like yesterday right up there close to the front, but likely also taking a bit of the wind on the nose. Other sprinter already up there is Dzervus, Granjel Cabrera and today also Thorsen in a fine position at this point.
3 km left for the sprinters, at the left side of the road we have Stocker for Guillen
Left of Guillen Borisavljevic for Moser, at Moser’s wheel a long train of sprinters, Granjel Cabrera, Keough, Vingerling, Krieger and Suryadi
At the right side Dahlberg for Thorsen at his wheel Boivin.
Sitting further back but not too far, Dzervus Von Hoff and Fonseca
2 km left and finally the last rider from the breakaway was reeled in.
We now got two distinct line of riders fighting for it, at the left side Stocker, Cisse, Guillen, Vingerling and Suryadi
At right the Stobart train have been very fast now on par with Centovalli, Dahlberg, Thorsen, Boivin, Moser, Fonseca (trying to pass and help Moser just like yesterday), Granjel Cabrera, Keough, Krieger.
Right of those on his own Von Hoff
1.7 km left.
Right: Dahlberg very fast in front of Thorsen
Fonseca now finally in front of Moser but the move made them lose some momentum.
In the middle Suryadi and behind him Von Hoff
At the left of them a long line with Boivin, Vingerling Granjel Cabrera, Keough and Krieger
Far left the intact three rider Centovalli train.
Just another hundred meters, but a lot of development, Dahlberg no longer fast enough and Thorsen seeks left, at this point slightly behind Fonseca with Moser
Stocker is gone now , Cisse in front of Guillen now with Boivin clued and behind him Vingerling and Granjel Cabrera
At train with Suryadi Von Hoff, Keough and Krieger behind Moser at the right side, but to far back to be connected.
Further back Yamamoto started to gain momentum but seems to be too far back.
First under the red kite is Fonseca with Moser (right)
Not far behind (left) Cisse has just swung of and now Guillen full throttle still with Boivin clued.
Not far behind Moser, Thorsen at his left Vingerling just a few meters behind him, Suryadi Von Hoff, Keough and Krieger
Granjel Cabrera at this point somewhat isolated half a cycle length in front of Suryadi’s left
800 meters
Von Hoff blasting past everyone. At his right rear Moser
Everyone else almost on line and not far back, this is certainly a thriller.
100 meters – As also seen above Krieger and with him also Keough have been insanely fast over the last 700 meters, but also Boivin and Granjel Cabrera now slightly better than Von Hoff, while Moser, and especially Thorsen and Guillen starting out so well, now struggles to get anything out of this.
Keough is fast at the end and Krieger was tired, but getting this close he would not let is go, and Krieger wins the stage with a wheel length over Keough.
Boivin 3th in front of Granjel Cabrera 4th and Von Hoff round of top 5.
Moser 6th, Vingerling 7th, Thorsen 8th, Suryadi 9th and Cisse outperforming his leader for 10th
With this the points jersey is still Moreno Moser’s but with just respectively 2 and 3 points to Alexander Krieger and Luke Keough.
