Tour de Langkawi
The sun as still shining but today we got wind, some 18 km/hour at the start and a little less expected near the finish, with the first half of the race wind from behind may help the breakaway, but on the final climb a headwind will make attacking a bit harder.
Today we will also have the first KoM jersey winner, won by the stage winner getting 6 points on the finish line.
Media favorites :
(Translation: AVG – MO – DW – ACC – STA – RES)
Joeaar opens the stage win a solo move.
Joeaar is of course hoping to get company from the pack, and he is also join by Beniusis, McConvey and Van Wyk after a few km.
With a total of 10 km races also McCutcheon and Pogacar is about to join the breakaway.
McConvey being clearly the stronger climber in this group is urging for cooperation.
Bille very active in the peloton talking much more than his part of the workload, many other teams also working and the breakaway never seem to be a danger for the climber teams.
To keep the distance especially Van Wyk takes many hard turns in the group, the pace it so hard that first Beniusis then McCutcheon and finally Pogacar can’t keep up.
but Van Wyk have misjudged how hard the uncategorized mid stage hill is, and now he see Joeaar and McConvey drift away without him.
But all the hard work from the breakaway riders was wasted energy, the peloton have come very close and with an acceleration from the pack Weiss is now passing McConvey to take the lead of the stage.
For the second day in a row McCormick is very active and now also Eisenhart able to attack from the pack to assist Weiss, who clearly aim to get more points at the sprint to add to the 10 points he got yesterday.
Weiss takes the sprint in front of his teammate.
Moser takes the last two points from the bunch. Soon after that everyone is brought back and we have a completely united pack riding in a very relaxed pace from km 42 basically all the way up to km 11 where the final climb starts, only interrupted by the intermediate sprint where Moser and Vingerling fight it out to the undivided joy of a few spectators, although they would have preferred to see Awang take part. Moser takes it with a narrow margin and will most likely lead the points after the stage.
The first 6 km of the climb is a rather boring affair with NENT having full control, slowly reducing the favorite group to about 70 riders.
But then after passing the 5 km banner, we get a more serious acceleration. Still NENT but now the strong Gaspar, and this move split the favorite group, Azteca leaders Stetina and Solis did not make the cut. Gaspar was reeled in.
Things settle a bit but then with 4 km to the top, a new acceleration this time it is Panayotov follow by Mannion (Azteca certainly haven’t thrown in the towel) and Cort Nielsen
Now Manfredi, Giogieri, Faiers, Valls and Nibali are closing in on the leading trio. Further back we see pre stage favorite Pinot struggling to find the legs to come back.
2.5 km to the top.
Things slows down a bit up front, everyone feeling the pain and afraid to explode, the 3 first groups we had before, melt in to one large group of 12 riders, with only Brandt not able to keep up, falling back to the larger group.
Pinot has also started to lay some distance to the large group and have caught Potocki and Manfredi who was dropped by the stage leaders.
Up front acceleration by first Kwiatkowski and then Faiers split the leading group again.
Faiers first under the red kite with Nibali clued, right behind them Ratiy, a gap down to Kwiatkowski and Borisavljevic, group Pinot/Valls 12 riders at 39”
With 300 meters left Nibali moves to the front and even though it is quite close, the 35 years old champ has used his energy to perfection. The Italian veteran is noted for 10 wins in Aquarius famous “book” of all time wins, and may even have won since it was published.
With the stage win Vincenzo Nibali also takes the GC lead
2nd Ratiy and 3rd Faiers both in the same time.
With this Thomas Faiers 2nd in GC and Vadim Ratiy 3rd.
Kwiatkowski 4th in front of Borisavljevic 5th both at 22”, fantastic result from Milos Borisavljevic and a brilliant day for the team.
Elissonde who have been more or less invisible all day with a good comeback for 6th at 44”, and behind him Thibaut Pinot 7th Petar Panayotov 8th both at 52”
Gavin Mannion 9th Tyron Giogieri 10th Rafael Valls 11th and Magnus Cort Nielsen 12th all in the same time as Pinot.
