The most basic thing is to make sure your riders are fit for any race you want to win

Thing is MacC he is new to PCM and i think he is still in the region of getting used to controls when racing. Attacking sprinting following etc. Theres no point us explaining all that because its in the manual.

make sure you have a well balanced team with just one leader and some teammates, eventually a sprinter. Let everybody do the job they're contracted for.

maybe but it took me longer to realise that fact than any in-race controls

just try and learn Wink
Menchov goes on to the attack!

Its not exactly hard to get used to the Controls, Reading the manual just makes the process even quick. You can probably read the whole thing in the time to takes to install. Depending on how good the computer is that is.

Lance method. Follow until you are the best then attack.

1. Pick your races. Choose races suited to your riders attributes
2. You need a good team leader.
3. I use Barloworld
Soler for mountains or
Gasparato for medium mountains w/ sprint finish.
Hunter and or Cooke for sprints
4. Load your team with climbers or flats and train them all up in training camps. i normally use 5-10 day camps before important or long stage races. I like to get riders above 75-80 for mountains: Soler up to 83+, Gasp >70

either

Mountains
4a) let any breakaway go, put your team on the front and real them in on the last climb using relay and effort >90, this will shed everyone. Start with your weakest rider. Then either attack 1-3kms from the finish on a climb or wait for the favourite(s) and counter attack. It often can be hard to pick who to follow and when. Don't go to early

Always have your leader on hold w/ up to 80-99 on effort cursor. I find this helps when responding to attacks.

b) let another team do the work and protect your rider. and wait for others to attack. Sending out breakaways or attacks by your teammates can be a good tactic to either wait for and protect your rider later (Particularly on downhills or flats to finish) or forcing other riders or teams to chase too early and get tired. I often do this, then chase them down with my team before Soler attacks

Flat Stages

Basically let your or other teams do the work
Protect your sprinter, Make sure you are at the front
If you have a good lead out man crank his effort up to whatever it takes to hold position at the front about 4-6kms from end of race.
Follow him (arrow S button), at 3 km make your lead out man sprint. Make sure your effort is up to 99 in hold position and aggressive sprint tactic is on

The tactic I normally use is just find the sprinter favourite who has good position and follow him. you can change people you follow during the sprint. Start your sprint when/if you start to overtake or if you feel they are slowing you down.

Its is very hard to win a breakaway and very rarely happens. I normally send a man out anyway just in case. Normally someone i think can win KOM or help later on. Don't put in too much effort. Relay with as little effort as possible ie. 50.

You can never win every time

In season mode you must pay attention to fitness levels

wow, thanks awal, that helps a bit. How do you know what races to target? Also, I see there are heaps of training programs, i guess the high bars indicate peak fitness. Is this where I should be aiming to be competitive in races? I have goe as the Drapac Porsche team as I thought a lower team might lead to better chance of not being sacked.

There seems to be a lot of races being offered to me to compete in. how many is optimum for the year? Also, in the manual it lists the top 3 tiers of racing (CTT T.HC T.1) but after this it doesn't say anything. where do the likes of C.1, C.HC etc come into it?

Wher you say hold on mountains is that maintain position?

Thanks for your help

Your riders will lose fitness after a certain amount of race day, somewhere between 40-60, so try and not race too much in the start of the season, so that they have some strength left for september-october.

All teams have different races they aim for, try and check under goals what your sponsors want you to achive.

If I were you I would start by trying an individual stage race with a top quality team so that you can get the hang of racing before jumping straight into a career

is there somewhere where there is a detailed writeup for nubies?

CrueTrue
You could try reading the Career Guide located in the Articles section of PCM06. It's not fully valid for PCM08, but you should find some useable tips anyway.
