The last stage before we hit the mountains
We get a 7 man breakaway
Passalacqua, Walker, Nally, Riebenbauer, Ladino, Steensen and King of the Mountains Stamsnijder.
Riebenbauer wins the first intermediate sprint but he and Passalacqua are dropped when we reach the hills.
Having won the first KoM, Stamsnijder looked like he was not going to go for the 2nd. Taking a drink with a km to the top while relaying and pulling off the front. No reaction came when Ladino put in a little dig but within metres from the line with a great burst of acceleration, he somehow took full points
He then also won the intermediate sprint after the descent, but the peleton look to have the chase under control
But there arent many riders chasing - there is only Cioni and Rubiera. The big sprinters were dislodged in the hill and are in a large chase group. (Although yesterday's winner Radochla, and Haselbacher are even further back)
Can 2 men chase down 5? The break were started to feel confident as Stamsnijder won the final sprint with 26km to go
And after that sprint, Steensen, Stamsnijder and Walker got away from Ladino and Nally
Pearl Jam send Cardoso to help chase as Popov would stand a good chance of victory today - a better chance than Walker who is in the break
But the 3 riders will stay away. Stamsnijder is the favourite and leads out
Steensen tries to get alongside the Dutchman
But Stamsnijder wins to take the leaders jersey!
In the battle for 4th, Gatorade's Martinez lead out Van Stayen, Popov, Hacecky and Rollin, with Daniel Moreno on the other side of the road.
Van Stayen comfortably takes 4th, ahead of Popov. But Popov does not get enough points to take the points jersey away from Petrov, as the now former race leader finishes 11th.
The sprinters group did make contact with the main peleton in the sprint, but were too far back to make an impact.
