The U23 time trial event is the place to discover new talents. Phinney won in 2011 and went on to become four-time World Time Trial Champion and Grand Tour winner. Most recent winner Herklotz went on to win the Vuelta this season, with Phinney as runner-up. Who can add his name to the illustrious list?
The fastest time of the early starters surprisingly goes to Brozyna. Garcia Cortina second and Vlasov disappointing with only the third time.
Oliveira divided his effort over the 51 kilometers better than the Pole. He was six seconds behind at the first split, three at the second but at the finish line he's 11 seconds faster.
Dulanjana started slow, nine seconds down on Oliveira at the first timing point, but he's five seconds ahead at time check two. He continues to gain and finishes with a best time of 1h13'24.
A disappointing ride for Cosnefroy. Tenth only at the first split. He recovers a bit but will only finish in provisional eighth.
De Bod up next. Fourth place behind Dulanjana, Oliveira and Brozyna.
Oomen goes to sixth, behind Garcia Cortina as well.
Cardona is equal to De Bod on split one and two, but is ten seconds faster on the last section. 26 seconds behind Dulanjana for third place.
New best time for Powless at split one, seven seconds faster than Brozyna. Also a new best time at split two, 49 seconds ahead of Dulanjana.
Casillas with the second time after split two, 29 seconds behind Powless.
Fernandes already a minute behind at checkpoint two and likely out of contention for the medals
Eg even worse, struggling to make the virtual top ten.
Last year's runner-up Per up next, and he can't reach Powless' split times as well. Slots in behind Casillas for third.
Scotson was seven seconds behind Powless but gains eight seconds to lead by one second at the second checkpoint.
But Wirtgen straight behind him is seventeen seconds faster at the moment.
And Maccagli is even fourteen seconds faster than him.
Gidich goes virtual sixth, 1'06 behind Maccagli. Expected a better time to be honest.
Ganna slightly faster than Gidich but still 52 seconds down at split two.
Another French rider stuggling in Cavagna. 1'34 down at split two and well outside the top ten.
The last rider to start is Van Niekerk, but he can't quite reach Maccagli's split times, 37 seconds behind. Here is the top ten at checkpoint two:

Powless reaching the finish line, beating Dulanjana's then-best time by 1'19.
Casillas losing an additional eleven seconds in the final part, but goes to second.
Fernandes posts the exact same time as countryman Oliveira, which will likely place them just outside the top ten.
Eg finishes well down the order.
Per can't replicate last year's performance and goes to virtual bronze, but seven riders still remaining.
Scotson was one second ahead of Powless at the last timing point. The Australian is four seconds slower on the final part though, losing out on the hot seat by three seconds.
Wirtgen is the one to push Powless out of the hot seat by 20 seconds. Virtual podium: Wirtgen-Powless-Scotson.
But here's Maccagli, who increases his lead to twenty seconds at the finish line to push Wirtgen out the hot seat and Scotson off the podium.
Gidich does not improve, going virtual sixth just ahead of Per.
Ganna takes sixth place away, but he dropped behind Casillas compared to split two.
Cavagna goes to thirteenth place, his slow start hurting him in the end.
Van Niekerk was five seconds away from the podium at check two, but he burned too much energy. 24 seconds behind Powless, he takes fifth place.
The winner of the World U23 Time Trial Championship is Andrea Enrico Maccagli from San Marino! Silver medal to Tom Wirtgen of Luxembourg. Bronze medal to Neilson Powless of the United States of America.
