As part of an exchange program, the cycling federations of Estonia and Iceland decide to host their national champions together. This decision was not popular in Estonia, as many riders boycotted the event.
Iceland is a battle between two Valio riders: Brynjolfsson and Omarsson.
Estoina has three participants: Joeaar, Laas and Tour de France winner Taaramäe.
A breakaway of four riders, one Icelandic amateur and three Estonians. Good to see their is cooperation at this level.
They are caught right on the foot. Taaramäe takes to the front, Laas and Omarsson follow.
The three riders reach the top with a gap of a minute to Joeaar and 1'30 to Brynjolfsson. A sprint will decide the Estonian Championship. The Icelandic Championship is likely in Omarsson's hands.
Laas surprises Taaramäe, coming from his wheel at 500 meters. Omarsson also getting involved for the overall win.
Martin Laas wins the sprint-à -trois, and becomes champion of Estonia. Ingvar Omarsson finishes in second place, but is the best rider from Iceland. Taaramäe third.
Estonian National Time Trial Championship Icelandic National Time Trial Championship
The joint time trial event can be split in two parts. A tight battle is expected for Iceland, but Taaramäe is almost secured of the Estonian and overall victory.
The Icelandic riders start first. Brynjolfsson finishes in 1h12'47.
Omarsson one second ahead at the first split, but an error in the second section makes him lose ten seconds which he wouldn't recover.
