French National Road Race Championship

Bonjour, the French riders await a hilly course. Four amateurs had dreams, but they were caught in the final lap by the work of Air France - KLM. An uphill finish will determine their new national champion.

As we head onto that climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Bernaudeau leads the way for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Sicard, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Koretzky on their wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare lining up as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/NC/FRA/RR/02.jpg

And it's Koretzky who opens the attacks early on. Gautier, Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Pichon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri quick to jump on his wheel. Sicard drops away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/NC/FRA/RR/03.jpg

Gautier takes over and establishes a small gap to Koretzky and Demare. Pichon a few meters behind and then Kadri leading the peloton. Sicard in tenth position.

The riders reach the top, 1500 meters remaining. Gautier has ten seconds to Demare, Koretzky, Pichon and also Kadri who made the jump.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/NC/FRA/RR/05.jpg

Demare starts his sprint, but can he catch Gautier in the final kilometer?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/NC/FRA/RR/06.jpg

No he can't, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Cyril Gautier is the French Champion!

Demare falls thirteen seconds short. Kadri completes the podium, beating Koretzky, Pichon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Roux in the sprint. Sicard seventh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Coppel versus the rest?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/NC/FRA/TT/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Robert the first to set a time worth mentioning, 1h08'45, which is 1'32 faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Sicard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Lecuisinier goes to third at 2'07, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Ivars at 2'18 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Bernaudeau at 2'29.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/NC/FRA/TT/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Mottin starts off ten seconds slower as Lecuisinier, but slowly edges towards him during his ride. In the end he falls two seconds short of the podium, still a long way off Robert.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/NC/FRA/TT/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Viennet is 1'11 slower than his teammate, for second place ahead of Sicard. A noticeable trend is that every rider gains time on Robert in the final quarter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/NC/FRA/TT/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Paillot on roughly the same times as Viennet, only differencing by a second at the checkpoints. At the finish they have the exact same time on screen, but Viennet ranks ahead on milliseconds.

And finally Coppel. This should just be a formality, but wait. He's fifteen seconds slower at the first split!

Thirty-nine at the second split. Is this really happening?

Coppel picks up the pace and reduces the gap to twenty-four at the third split. We know Robert had a weak end, so can Coppel recover?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/NC/FRA/TT/05.jpg

No he can't, he is nine seconds slower at the finish line!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Stelly Robert with the upset, beating Coppel for the French title. Viennet completes the podium for cycleYorkshire.
