Team Cerveceria Costa Rica unfortunately missed their flight, so we only arrive at the start with five professional riders. Not that anyone was going to beat Amador though.
To fill the void, some local amateurs are allowed to participate. I hope they like to climb, otherwise they're in for one of the worst days of their live.
Two amateurs speed up the mountain. Furthermore, six riders break clear of the pack including Amador. Other professionals who can follow the pace so far are Brenes, Guillén and Jara. Only Marin has given up the fight.
Brenes attacks, the only way he might be able to beat Amador. The current Costa Rican champion has no difficulty of following. Guillén thinks he's a mountain goat and gives everything to follow. A few meters after this photo he would halt to a standstill and become a mountain snail.
Amador then goes on to drop Brenes and the race is done from here on out.
Andrei Amador wins on the uphill dirt roads! Brenes finishes two minutes behind, all the others abandoned.
A special price is given to Amador if he manages to overtake every rider who started ahead of him. He passes Brenes, who started two minutes in front of him, at the second checkpoint. Next up: Jara.
He also falls victim to the Amador steam train. And then imagine that these two are number two and three at the split times.
Marin and Guillén just survive, Amador fell a few hundred meters short of overtaking them as well.
A clear winner today: Andrei Amador is the double Costa Rican Champion again.
