Ranaweera took over the leader's jersey for the first time in this race after finishing 2nd in the ITT yesterday. He leads Oomen by 8 seconds and Wirtgen by 15 seconds by what has turned into a super-close battle for the win. All to play for today on the slopes of the Morzine. Who will come out on top? Let's find out...
Name MON ACC Ranaweera76 65 Padun75 71 Oomen75 67 Fabbro73 69 Eg73 67 Power73 61 Novak72 70 Gidich72 70 Budyak72 65 Dulanjana72 61
12 riders got into the break of the day:
Min (GC 15' )
Schlegel (KOM leader)
A. Van Niekerk (GC 21' )
Budenieks (GC 17' )
Cherkasov (GC 21' )
Zahiri
Per (GC 18' )
Powless (GC 16' )
Vlasov
Kimathi
Ganna (GC 23' )
Nych
Ganna, Budenieks, Nych the order at the first intermediate split.
BNZ doing a lot of work in the pack today. Perhaps Fernandes feeling good to improve his 9th place in the GC. They're getting help with Lierse, Ayubowan and cycleYorkshire.
The break starts the first climb with a lead of 6'29".
The peloton starts shedding riders in the opening kilometers itself.
Nych is dropped from the break 5 km before the summit.
Four riders remain in the front group now. Cherkasov, Powless, Van Niekerk, Per, Vlasov, Kimathi and Ganna have all been dropped.
Schlegel wins the first KOM sprint ahead of Budinieks, Zahiri, Min, Cherkasov, Powless and Per.
The gap is increasing to the 68 rider peloton.
Schlegel, Budenieks, Zahiri is the order at the second KOM sprint.
Zahiri and Min attack with 13 km to go. They drop Schlegel and Budenieks.
Schlegel makes it back to the front group with 10 km remaining.
Budenieks now makes it bak to the front group with 8 km left.
Min attacks almost immediately. Budenieks is dropped once again!
Padun (GC 6'53" ) and Mas (GC 10'24" ) attack the peloton. They catch Nych very soon.
Min meanwhile, increases his lead over the chasing duo.
Padun has dropped Mas. Novak (GC 10'25" ) has attacked from the pack. All three are pulling away from the peloton.
2 km to go for Min and he has nearly 2 minutes on the chasers.
Back in the pack, no response from the GC leaders yet on the recent attacks.
Final kilometer for Min.
1'56" is Padun's lead to the peloton and he's nearly caught the Van Niekerk/ Per/ Ganna group.
12 riders now dropped from the peloton with 3 km to go. Dulanjana and Van der Poel among those dropped.
Mas and Novak are caught by the pack.
Min wins from a perfectly timed attack with around 7 km from the finish!
Padun is past the Van Niekerk/ Per/ Ganna group with 1.5 km to go.
Areruya (GC 20th), Fernandes (GC 9th), Barta (GC 16th), Brozyna (GC 28th),
Cosnefroy (GC 25th) and Aguirre are dropped from the peloton.
Schlegel reaches the line in 2nd, edging out Zahiri to 3rd.
The Van Niekerk group is caught by the peloton.
Novak and Mas are dropped. Gidich, Fabbro and Amezewa further behind. De Plus and Aranburu even further back.
Budenieks takes 4th place on the stage.
Padun is 5th, gaining some time over his GC rivals in the process.
Oomen, Ranaweera and Eg launch an attack. Cherkasov and Powless are hanging on to them. Oomen needs 8 seconds to overturn his deficit. He currently has 13 seconds.
Oomen finishes 6th.
Ranaweera just behind him in 7th, but are those the slumped shoulders of a rider accepting his fate? We need to wait for the gaps to come in. Cherkasov doing well to finish 8th.
Eg and Powless complete the Top 10.
Ganna, Per, Power, Wirtgen, Vlasov, Carboni and Conci make up the next group and finish in that order.
Kimathi, Budyak, De Plus is the last of the Top 20, with Van Niekerk just behind that.
Today's winner - Kyeng Ho Min.
Sam Oomen wins Tour de l'Avenir 2018. He overturned the 8 second deficit in the final stretch, gaining 15 seconds with his late attack to the line. Ranaweera had no answer at the end, and settles for 2nd place in the GC. Wirtgen rode a great race, but tiredness finally caught up to him on the last stage. He finishes a good 3rd nonetheless. Gidich and the surprise package Conci complete the Top 5. Eg is 6th with the Popo4Ever duo of Budyak and Padun in 7th and 8th. Padun was the most aggressive rider on both mountain stages but lost too much in the ITT to recover. Jose Fernandes with a good 9th place for BNZ. Fabbro is 10th.
Oomen also wins the Points jersey, ahead of Kemboi and Cavagna. Schlegel wins the KOM classification with Brozyna in 2nd. Oomen jumps up to tied 3rd with Gembeckas. Euskaltel win the Team Standings.
