Oomen leads from Padun at the top of the GC, but while the former is capable against the cock, Padun's capabilities leave something to be desired. How much will that come into the fore over this long TT? One would assume it would be quite a marked difference. The others in the Top 5 are all well capable of challenging for a win in the TT on a good day and at least challenge strongly for a Top 5 spot if they ride according to their billing. The rest ofthe Top 10 could also be in for a major reshuffle as certain riders do well on their own but others do not on a stage like this.

The first rider we focus on today is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Callum Scotson. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bennelong rider takes first place at every intermediate time check and clocks in at 1h18'21" for provisional pole at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%201.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Kanerva next in focus. he's 19" down at the first time check, down 54" at the second, 1'14" but halves that in the final sector to finish in 3rd for the time being.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%202.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Dunbar starts off slow to be only 30th at the first time check. He steadily improves, climbing to 13th, then 8th and finally improves on 3rd place, falling short by just 17".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%204.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Cardona follows a similar trajectory to Dunbar. 22nd at the first time check, 13th at the second, 8th at the third but comfortably posts the fastest time of 1h17'9" at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%205.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png M. Van Niekerk is surprisingly 40" down at the first time check. He improves to be just 2" down at the second, then goes on to post the best time at the third and finally smashes the best time, with a explosive final sector. The new time to beat is 1h14'44".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%206.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Rui Oliveira clocks in 19" down at the first split. He's 38" down at the second and 1'4" down at the third. He ends up just over two minutes slower but still in 2nd place for the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%207.jpg

We pick up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Oka as he crosses the 3rd intermediate split and he's just a second off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van Niekerk's time. Could an upset be on the cards here. The answer is no as his run falls apart int he last sector and he loses nearly 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%208.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Maccagli rips it up in the first two sectors, beating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van Niekerk's times with ease. He's still in the lead at the third time check, but it is down to just 7 seconds. His early effort comes back to haunt him as he ends up 1'22" down on the best time at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%209.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png De Bod follows a similar trajectory being 12" off at the first check, 44" at the second, 1'15" at the third and finally 2'37" at the finish to go 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Cassilas is a good run. He goes 9" slower in the first intermediate split. 30" at the second intermediate means 2nd place but slips to 3rd at the third split. He'd recover slightly to finish 1'19" down and 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Cavagna with a measured start losing 56" in the first sector. This would increase to 1'28" in the second but come down to 1'22" in the third! He would end up being 2'21" down at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Ganna with a similar start to his teammate, 52" down at the first and 1'25" at the second. However, he would not improve and his times at the third intermediate and finish were 1'38" and 3' in arrears. Not the best race for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Per is down 40 seconds at the first check. It would increase to 1'1" at the second only to come down to 51" at the third. He would finish with a deficit of 1'37".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Cosnefroy wwould be 47", 1'16", 1'23" and 2'21" down at the respective intermediate and finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Dulanjana with a yo-yo ride going from 42" in arrears to 1'8", improving to 41" and finally to end up in 2nd, losing 1'14".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Fernandes with a slowing start, losing 51". It would become 1'23" but then improve slightly to 1'17". His final time was down 1'57".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2017.jpg

Now to the GC Top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Power with a poor run, losing 6'42".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Fabbro too, losing big, down 5'11".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Eg considerably better. ending up losing 1'46".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Conci with a really good time, just 55" down and into second place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Novak with a nightmare run losing 7'18".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Budyak doing better but still loses 2'46".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Gidich, one of the pre-race favourites keeps it consistent throughout and stops the clock 44" off the pace. He's now 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Ranaweera is 27" off the pace at the first split and 33" at the second. He burns up the third sector to become the fastest rider. However, he cannot keep up his momentum and loses out to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van Niekerk by just 2 seconds!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Wirtgen is also very consistent with his ride. He ends up 3rd, down 26". He also wins the award for picture of the day!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Padun, another rider with a weak TT pays the price, losing a whopping 7'23" on the course! He never looked comfortable in any of the sectors and pays the price big-time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2023.jpg

Yellow Jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Oomen starts off composed, being down 25" at the first time check. His deficit increases to 43" at the halfway mark but reduces again to 25" at the third check. He finally ends up losing 46" on the day and finishes 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2024.jpg

Today's winner - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Morne Van Niekerk.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS8%2025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Ranaweera is the new GC leader courtesy his 2nd place on the stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Oomen just 8 seconds down and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Wirtgen just 15. Quite a gap after that with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Padun falling to 10th. The main gainers from this stage were pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Conci, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Eg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Dulanjana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Fernandes, all of whom are in the Top 10 now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Fabbro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Novak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Power lost out big. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Oomen back up to 2nd in the Points standings.
