Nine riders form a strong break:
Schlegel
Brozyna
Cosnefroy (4th GC, 25" )
Koumpetsos
Strakhov
Eriksson (4th KOM)
Okamoto
M. Van Niekerk
Gembeckas (KOM leader)
Eriksson is already in trouble in the early slopes.
Five remain in the front group as Okamoto, Gembeckas and Koumpetsos are distanced.
Van Niekerk and Strakhov now dropped. This is just the first climb!
Schlegel wins the first KOM sprint ahead of Brozyna. Conefroy, who's dropped now too, is 3rd. Strakhov, Van Niekerk, Koumpetsos and Poljanec, from the the pack pick up points. Three riders from the break are already caught.
Cosnefroy caught up to the front group on the descent.
Van Niekerk and Strakhov are caught by the pack at the start of the second climb.
Brozyna wins the second KOM sprint ahead of Schlegel. Cosnefroy is next with Rocchetti and Poljanec taking points from the peloton.
Cosnefroy, Brozyna, Schlegel is the order through the intermediate sprint.
Cosnefroy is dropped again on the third climb.
Schlegel wins the third KOM sprint ahead of Brozyna. The order then is Koumpetsos, Dulanjana, Amezewa, Ranaweera and De Plus, with Cosnefroy in the pack.
The peloton has only 37 riders at the start of the fourth climb.
Areruya is one the bigger names not in the peloton.
The Xero man would make it back on the climb as the pack would increase in size to 50 riders.
Schlegel continues his ride claiming KOM wins, as Brozyna cannot keep up in the final stretch. Dulanjana, De Plus and Koumpetsos the others to get points here. The pack trails by 2'44"
Budenieks attacks on the flat and catches up to the leading duo.
Then Arifin has the same idea and achieves the same result.
The peloton have brought their deficit down to 1'19" at the start of the fifth climb.
Schlegel attacks the break as the pack closes in.
The other three from the break are caught.
Those riders in the break at some point today are feeling the pain now. The peloton spitting out riders every kilometer and now down to 28.
Schlegel is caught 1 km from the summit. The peloton has further reduced in size but all GC favourites are still here.
De Plus takes maximum points in the fifth KOM sprint. Dulanjana, Oomen, Ranaweera, Conci, Fernandes, Gidich, Barta, Schlegel, Padun and Carboni get the points.
Areruya in trouble again on the downhill. He has Aidan Van Nielerk for company.
21 riders in the peloton as we start the final climb. Euskaltel, Ayubowan and Lierse set the pace. 14.7 kilometers to the summit.
Riders are steadily being dropped as we climb higher.
Areruya has made it back to the front group 7 km from the summit.
2 km later, and we have the first attacks. Padun, Wirtgen, Oomen, Gidich, Ranaweera and Power the riders to have got away from the pack.
The gap to the next group is steadily increasing.
Padun pulls away 3.5 kilometers from the summit.
Eg, Fabbro, Novak, Budyak, Conci, Carboni and Fernandes for the next group. Dulanjana and Mas are in A2. De Plus on his own a little further behind.
Oomen and Ranaweera now distancing the other three riders.
Wirtgen chases and catches the duo.
Fabbro and Budyak have dropped Novak, Eg and Conci in their own battle behind.
Padun summits the last climb first followed by Ranaweera, Oomen, Wirtgen, Gidich, Power, Budyak, Fabbro, Eg, Novak and Conci.
18 km of downhill to the finish remain. Budyak and Fabbro have caught up to the Gidich, Power duo.
Padun now extending his lead in the early section of the downhill.
The three rider E2 is doing the same over the next group.
4 km to go and Padun's lead has stabilized at around 25 seconds.
Flamme Rouge for Padun and still the same advantage.
Padun wins a gruelling stage to La Chambre. No celebrations, just a rider trying to eke out as many seconds as possible on his rivals.
Wirtgen wins the sprint for 2nd, with Oomen in 3rd and Ranaweera in 4th. 23 seconds is the gap.
A huge 2'23" later, overnight GC leader Gidich flies in to take 5th on the day, but loses his jersey. Fabbro, Budyak and Power is the order at the line for 6th to 8th. Great day for Popo4Ever.
Novak is 9th with Conci 10th and Eg in 11th. 3'28" their deficit.
Fernandes, Dulanjana and Carboni lose over 5 minutes.
Mas next, losing 6'06".
De Plus finishes about 30 seconds further behind.
Barta, Schlegel and Areruya lose 8 minutes on the day...
... with Paez and A. Van Niekerk a further 12 seconds in arrears.
Today's winner - Mark Padun.
Sam Oomen is the new GC leader, for the first time since Stage 1. Padun's win and time gains propel him to 2nd in the GC, with Wirtgen now 3rd. Gidich drops to 5th. Oomen now also leads the Points standings, Schlegel picked the perfect day for a KOM run, and is the new jersey holder, with Brozyna up to 2nd. Euskaltel take the lead in the Team Standings.
