Saya Kuroeda picked up an unlikely victory on Stage 2, with Meiji clearly assigning him as their top sprinter yesterday. Cavagna's 2nd place got him the leader's jersey, and there's every chance that he retains it after today's stage. However, the gap at the top is really close and whole host of riders can take the jersey away from him. Someone who'll look to turn his fortunes around is Salem Kemboi, the top favourite on both of the previous stages, but only with a best finish of 5th in them. Once again, he's top favourite here, but it remains to be seen if he can live up to it.

12 riders tried to form the first break but were chased down.

Eventually, four were able to get away:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png M. Van Niekerk (3rd GC, 2" down)

No bonifications for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van Niekerk at the second intermediate sprint as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Eriksson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Lawless and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Van Hooydonck pass through ahead of him, in that order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%208.jpg

The first two groups merge after a couple of kilometers. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Pedersen group is still behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Eriksson wins the third intermediate sprint with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van Niekerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Lawless behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van Niekerk is the new GC leader, notwithstanding his current position being in the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%209.jpg

The peloton comes back together inside the final 30 kilometers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Lawless, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Eriksson is the order at the fourth KOM sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Van Hooydonck has already been caught by the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Eriksson is caught just after the KOM.

More riders are now dropping out the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van Niekerk is caught with 15 km left with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Meiji, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Ayubowan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Isostar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png SPAR and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Campari all helping out at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2011.jpg

The pack inexplicably slows down with 10 km remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Meiji decides to take full control and catches pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Lawless, the last of the breakaway with 7 km remaining.

Acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Zhao, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Liu. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Oka is behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2013.jpg

They sit up and are caught soon enough.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png SPAR at the front with their train with 2.5 km left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Budenieks leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Major. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Liu doing the same for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kuroeda on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Minali is behind them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Van der Poel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Kemboi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Cullaigh are on the left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Baterdene is in a good position in the middle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Meiji, behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Budenieks, is too fast for the others. But is this too soon to go full tilt?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Major has caught up to his leadout pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Bedenieks with a great burst of speed. The rest seem to be dallying!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Major starts his sprint as we reach the final kilometer. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kuroeda, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Hsu on his tail, the nearest challengers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Major is majorly overpowered by the rest, and is falling back fast. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Minali is at the front, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Baterdene on his tail. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kuroeda once again coming through fast. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Hsu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Van der Poel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Kemboi on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Cullaigh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Cavagna on the left.

Then it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Kemboi, who's much better placed on this stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Minali and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kuroeda are slowing down. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Cullaigh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Cavagna are catching up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Van der Poel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Kemboi are trying to pass pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Baterdene on either side. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Hsu is closing in on the far side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Kemboi takes it on the line! What a move to get past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Baterdene, by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Van der Poel too in fact. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Ayubowan man will be elated to get redemption on this stage, and it'll probably be a bit of a relief too! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Van der Poel has to settle for 2nd place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Cavagna squeezes through for 3rd at the line, meaning he takes back his jersey from the clutches of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van Niekerk. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Hsu in 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Baterdene hangs on for 5th, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Cullaigh in 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kuroeda and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Minali, both tiring, finish 7th and 8th respectively, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kalaba in 9th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Major's early move did not work out and he finishes 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2026.jpg

Today's winner - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Salem Kemboi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/Avenir/AvenirS3%2027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Kemboi gets his win which pushes him up to 3rd in the GC behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Cavagna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van Niekerk. A gutsy ride from the latter just turned up short to take the leader's jersey today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Cavagna retains the Points jersey with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Kemboi up to 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Eriksson is the new leader of the KOM classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Puma continue to lead the team standings.
