Three riders were allowed to get away into the break quite early:
Goldstein
Gasa
Skaarseth
Skaarseth picked up the KOM win ahead of Gasa and Goldstein with Haavardsholm and Grosser picking up points from the pack.
Six riders join the break at the end of the downhill section of the climb. They are:
Stork
Grosser
Haavardsholm
Wahyudi
Geschke
Tybor
Yes, you read that right! The GC leader has distanced the pack and is in the break! There's something you don't see everyday.
There are 10 more riders separated in three groups chasing to catch up to the break now!
They eventually make the catch with 125 km remaining. The final break stands at:
Goldstein
Gasa
Skaarseth, Ratto
Stork, Grosser, Geschke, Raggio, Schinnagel
Haavardsholm, Tybor
Wahyudi, Taubel
Daspuntsag, Matzka, Reddish
Veilleux, Ziesler
Zekovica
Haavardsholm wins the first intermediate sprint ahead of Geshcke and Tybor. Bonus seconds for our race leader.
100 km to go. The gap back to the peloton is decreasing and currently stands at 4'30". Telia, BNZ and Swisslion are setting the pace.
Wahyudi wins the the second KOM sprint and confirms the jersey for himself overnight. Tybor, Zekovica, Taubel and Haavardsholm also pick up points.
50 km to go and still the same teams are controlling the peloton. The gap is now 2'10".
Haavardsholm, Geschke, Zekovica the order through the intermediate sprint. Interesting tactics here for sure from Oberfranken.
The break is caught with 22 km to go.
The same three teams at the front as we reach the final 10 kilometers. The pack is still bunched up.
Three distinct trains now with 2.5 km remaining.
On the left - Swisslion with their train for Mezgec behind Telia pace-makers.
In the middle - Torckler and Boev leading out Nizzolo with Bogdanovics, Geschke and Thorsen on their tail.
On the right - BNZ train for Von Hoff with Haddi, King and Krasnov latching on.
A kilometer later and it's just two main trains:
Boev - Nizzolo - Bogdanovics - Baterdene in the middle.
Zhupa - Mezgec - Geschke - Thorsen on the right.
Matzka trying to bring Von Hoff up on the left. Haddi is on the latter's wheel. King is already sprinting!
Those on the right have done their job for the day and are dropping off.
Its' Boev, Nizzolo and Bogdanovics at the front under the red kite.
600 meters. Nizzolo and Bogdanovics trying to go past a slowing Boev on either side. Zhupa is the next rider but Mezgec is not on his wheel. Matzka is dropping now with Von Hoff starting his sprint.
Bogdanovics takes the lead with 200 meters to go.
Bogdanovics still leading. It's King coming through on the far left. Mezgec and Thorsen are blocked in.
The gap between the front two is less than half a tire inside the final 50 meters!
Bogdanovics wins! A huge victory for him and his team, and it's been a long time coming for the former. Nizzolo has to settle for 2nd once again.
Von Hoff finishes fast to claim 3rd. Haddi, Geschke, King, Mezgec and Thorsen are next.
Krasnov and Zhupa complete the Top 10.
Today's Winner - Maris Bogdanovics.
The stage win propels Bogdanovics up to 3rd in the GC. Geschke's exploits in the break and in the sprint keep him top of the GC and the Points standings. Nizzolo stays in 2nd in both. Wahyudi is the new leader of the KOM classification. Quispe retains his lead in the U25s.
