USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 2

USA Pro Cycling Challenge – Stage 2

Howdy mates! The second stage of the USAPCC is about to start. And just like yesterday, it's mostly flat. Still, as we've seen once again yesterday, it's the riders who usually decide how tough a race will actually become.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri won the first stage yesterday and will once again be the man to beat. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Vanoverschelde finished second and third yesterday, and perhaps influenced by that result are once again predicted to end up in the top 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0021.jpg

But before we will see the favourites up front, we will take a look at which brave soldiers will try to attempt to stay away from the pack. The first three riders who want to break away are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Videika
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Schinnagel
and top CT cobbler pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Machado.

All 3'43 behind in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0022.jpg

Dina and Killy tried to join them, but didn't succeed. Once again a small group then, which should please the sprinter teams.

Meanwhile Delvaux is gladly allowing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Hochmann to set the pace and make sure the break doesn't get too many minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0023.jpg

The break managed to gain 8 minutes, but near the end it's melting fast. 37 seconds are left under the 10km-banner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0024.jpg

It took a bit before trains were being formed... Until Delvaux shot up extremely fast and left every other team in their tracks! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Vanoverschelde and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen quickly anticipated and managed to grab pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri's wheel.

On the right is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Chavanne, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh couldn't follow...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0025.jpg

Behind Manninen it's the leftovers of a Sauber train with all the other favourites, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0026.jpg

1,6 kilometers left and everyone wants to be behind Guarnieri! One long line of riders has appeared as follows:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Korzh
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Vanoverschelde
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Vanderaerden
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Kip
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Bogdanovics
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Colbrelli

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0027.jpg

With 900 metres to go, Guarnieri is about to get passed by Manninen and Vanoverschelde but has only just started his sprint.'Salleh is moving up quickly, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0028.jpg

400 meters and it feels like Guarnieri is taking it easy... Can anyone even attack him?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0029.jpg

Ooooohh, Salleh!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0030.jpg

But it's just not enough! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri finally started dominating sprints in the Continental Tour and makes it two on two! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh came dangerously close though and should be satisfied with second place, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Vanoverschelde and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Kip continue their steady performances and also join the top 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0031.jpg

Vanderaerden, Modolo, Fonseca, Matthews and Bogdanovics also get themselves some bonification seconds. Which means Van Heerden (11th) does not!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0032.jpg

And heaven knows what happened to Keukeleire. Only 30th...

Carsi (25th) couldn't impress either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0033.jpg

So, it's time for the podium. Guarnieri solidifies his lead in the GC onto an “unbridgable” 23 seconds in the TT to Vanoverschelde and 30 to Kip. A good result by another sprinter tomorrow is needed if he wants to lose the final GC win!

No changes in the other rankings today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/USAPCC/2/PCM0034.jpg

Tomorrow will feature the final chance for the sprinters to either increase or hold their position before the TT. And there's also a decisive KoM sprint to look forward to. Tune in then to see how it unfolds!
