Previous mountain stages featured an uphill finish. Let's not do that today. Stage eighteen starts in Chelan and finishes in Kittitas, after a long downhill.
A steep unpaved climb in the first seven kilometers to wake the riders up. Seven riders would attack on it, and here's the order as they went by the banner:
Stetina (16 points)
Agnoli (12 points)
Lemus Davila (10 points)
Riesebeek (8 points)
Feng (6 points)
Magnusson (4 points)
Bookwalter (2 points)
Mendes would join later on to form a break of eight. They already had four minutes at the top of the climb, and managed to extend that to six. When we hit Laurel Hill, Mendes would be dropped immediately, scoring no points for the KoM today. Riesebeek also wouldn't last the entire climb, but would still score a few points on his way up to extend his enormous KoM lead even further.
After Laurel Hill we continue to climb on Wenatchee Mountain, the climb is split into two separate category one climbs. Lemus Davila and Stetina are the last two standing, as Agnoli falls of the back. The gaps are gigantic, four minutes to Feng/Magnusson/Riesebeek, seven to Bookwalter, eight to Mendes, twelve to the peloton. Lemus Davila is the highest ranked GC rider in the original break at twenty minutes and could make up a fair few places.
Some action in the peloton. Suaza attacks, not for the stage win but to get back in the GC top ten, which he lost yesterday. The group is still large with 60 riders.
Yates sees Suaza's success and attempts to do the same. Pozzo takes charge of the peloton, slightly accelerating, but Yates is gone as well. Affonso (18th) got dropped because of this.
The two leader cross the top, which is followed by a 30k descent. Agnoli at 1'30, who might return in the downhill but otherwise there are no other contenders for the stage win.
Eastman wants to get the jersey again and attacks as well, followed by Berhane. Ivanov takes over control in the peloton. Talansky and Valls are not attacking each other for the jersey, instead joining forces against Yates who is now the virtual leader.
Suaza over the top at eleven minutes from to the front two, with a few former members in the break still in between. Let's time to the rider behind him.
Yates at 1'46, so Suaza has a sizable gap. 14 seconds to Eastman and Berhane, another 22 to De Marchi, Sepulveda, Atapuma and a caught Bookwalter. Group Valls/Talansky 22 seconds behind this new attack.
Pozzo and Robov lead the downhill, catching the new attack shortly after the top. Eastman and Berhane were also caught, as would Yates near the bottom. Suaza still leads by 30 seconds as we head onto the flat section.
You'd almost forget we have two leaders: Lemus Davila and Stetina. They enter the final kilometer for a sprint-Ã -deux, with Stetina having a slight head start.
It would be a very close sprint, but Peter Stetina takes Azteca's second stage victory in a row. Lemus Davila with a nice second place and set to gain some ground in the GC.
Switching back to the favorites group, which still has ten kilometers to go. Suaza got caught, so all attacks have been in vain. There will be no differences amongst the top in the GC.
Agnoli did not manage to return on the downhill, but takes away the final bonus seconds to finish in third place. Feng also stays ahead to finish fourth.
Magnusson was caught just before the line. Yates wins the sprint for fifth ahead of Valls, Atapuma, Talansky, Eastman and Koshevoy. The gap got down to 7'42, thus Lemus Davila only moves up to 14th place in the GC, while it was looking like he could enter the top ten.
Suaza lost ten seconds in the sprint due to a small gaps, which makes him lose a place in the GC to De Marchi.
