Stage seventeen is hilly, though compared to stage six it has the same profile, but that stage was rated mountainous. Anyway, an uphill finish to Timber Peak, a very steep climb which would've warranted mountain status.
Six riders battle for the points on Wauconda Summit. Here's the result:
Mendes (six points)
Moyano (four points)
Magnusson (two points)
Moreno Hernandez
Riesebeek
Minnard
An unfamiliar sight at the front of the peloton, no Azteca train. Eastman lost the jersey to Valls, so it should now be Kulczyk at the front. Ayubowan with a lot of help though.
Riesebeek and the five M's (catchy name for a band) would be caught twenty kilometers before the final climb, thirty to go in total. Podium Ambition joins in on leading the peloton.
The first part of the climb was calm, but Squire breaks things open with six kilometers to go. Now that Eastman is out of the jersey, can the domestiques go stage hunting? Does the team think the jersey is unrecoverable?
Ockeloen, De Marchi and Henao follow, but then Talansky goes, drawing a response from race leader Valls and youth leader Eyob. This forces Yates and Berhane to follow as well. Eastman once again M.I.A.
Four kilometers, Squire leads by 30 seconds over Talansky, who has a small gap to Valls, Yates, Berhane, Eyob and Henao. De Marchi and Ockeloen slightly behind, followed by group Eastman. The gaps aren't big but on the steep climb it can turn into minutes quickly.
Squire tackles the sections with high gradient, keeping a constant gap to Talansky, but group Valls is now at a minute. The pace there is quite low, as De Marchi and Ockeloen managed to rejoin. However, group Eastman is going even slower, and has to worry about his podium spot compared to Talansky an maybe even Berhane.
Bangota leads the peloton in the person of Parra Bustamente for his leaders Anacona and Sepulveda. Hoem and Atapuma attack to try and make it to group Valls. Eastman does not even attempt to reduce the gap, neither does Suaza who gives his teammates a chance at a good result.
Some silver lining for Azteca as Robbie Squire wins the stage, fending off a late charge by Talansky. We start the chronometer, seeing how the top of the GC will look.
Henao in third place, ahead of Berhane at 1'25. Then a gap of eleven seconds to Yates in fifth and Eyob in sixth. Eyob actually left Valls behind in the final kilometer, who is heading towards the line now.
Valls finishing at exactly two minutes from Squire. Talansky was exactly two minutes behind Valls in the GC, but the American finished at twelve seconds from Squire. However, for his second place he picked up twelve seconds. That means we have a tie at the top of the GC! Let's consult the rulebook to see who is the rightful owner of the yellow jersey!
Yates was 49 seconds behind Valls, and only made up 24. He drops to third, 25 seconds behind the two leaders. With his result today he does pass Haller in the points classification, though he will need a bit of margin to take the jersey to the final podium.
De Marchi and Ockeloen finishing behind the Spaniard. Atapuma beats Hoem in a sprint for the final place in the top ten.
And here we have the group containing Eastman, Anacona, Sepulveda and Suaza. They finish at nearly four minutes from the winner. Eastman does manage to stay in front of Berhane in the GC by 45 seconds. Atapuma gains two places, from eighth to sixth, with Anacona going the other way around. Squire enters the top ten in seventh place, Eyob goes up to ninth, Sepulveda down to tenth and Suaza down to eleventh. Places six to nine are only separated by 26 seconds.
The local crowd boos. That can only mean one thing: Rafael Valls remains in the jersey, but the fight is closer than ever.
