Course de Solidarnosc - Stage 4

Course de Solidarnosc – Stage 4

After a good night's sleep, we're finally ready to cover the fourth and final stage of the Course du Soidarnosc! The riders are raring to go, and a quick look at the scoreboard shows why: Almost every team has something to ride for today. Whether it's the GC, which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh is leading, the KoM jersey or even the U25 jersey, lots of points are still up for grabs. And in 231 quite bumpy kilometers, with one KoM sprint near the end, we will know what effect today will have.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0018.jpg

The sprinters that are favourite today need no more introduction, so let's get right into the action! And today, 10 (!) teams ave decided to send a rider into the break. The names are as folllows:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Ballerini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Van der Ploeg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Scotson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Rocchetti
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vangenechten
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Vila
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Stoenchev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Aasvold
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Poljanec

None of them are ranked in the KoM standings. If this break can hold on until the KoM sprint, this means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Amanuel will at least finish with a tied first place in these standings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0019.jpg

Rothaus is keeping the gap relatively low. It's interesting to see them taking charge in the chase, instead of Sauber. Anyway, there's three minutes left for the break with 100 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0020.jpg

The break survives until at least the KoM sprint (with 20 kilometers to go). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit wins this sprint, not a big surprise as he's easily the best puncheur in the break. More interesting though, there's still 1,5 minutes left for him. We may get an upset break win here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0022.jpg

10 kilometers and 1'09 left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Aasvold and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Vila had to drop, but eight riders are still working together to stay ahead!

Reminder: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh is 41 seconds ahead of the breakaway riders. So a small win by them might be in his adventage, as the other sprinters won't be able to get bonification seconds this way. But it's risky for sure...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0023.jpg

6 kilometers to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Poljanec, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Van der Ploeg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vangenechten break away from their breakaway buddies!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0024.jpg

But who am I kidding. They all get caught with 3 kilometers to go. Time for another classic sprint it seems. Who will prevail?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0025.jpg

And in this sprint preparation, The same two teams as yesterday are trying to set up a train. The order is as follows:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Ferreirapcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Belgasem
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Coutinhopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleire
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerdenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png McLay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Vanoverscheldepcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Vanderaerdenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Carsi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Angarita
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri

Keukeleire in front of McLay is interesting... Also Guardini is far behind once again, but at least looks like he's going to try today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0026.jpg

With 1,5 kilometers to go we can see that Rothaus has the best train today! Not that much of a gap though, so all other sprinters are still in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0027.jpg

With 700 meters other sprinters have to hurry though, as we're seeing the same as yesterday but with different teams: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden getting the perfect leadout with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Vanoverschelde looking to steal victory from him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0028.jpg

300 meters, Van Heerden is a bit ahead but Vanoverschelde has the inside corner! Salleh is having a bad day though, and so is Guarnieri (well, more like average in his case), he might lose the GC today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0029.jpg

But before we can get to the GC we still have to finish the stage of course... And in the end, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden who wins the sprint with relative ease, he even gets to cheer a little before the finish line! A great win for him, but especially the Rothaus team who worked for him all day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0030.jpg

Behind him, Keukeleire barely beats Guillén for third. Manninen, Carsi and Guarnieri follow him. and then it's finally time for Salleh in 8th, who has to be worried about his GC lead.

Yesterday's stage winner Vanderaerden and Angarita complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0031.jpg

A very bad day from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Matthews as well. He only finishes 15th...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0032.jpg

Time for the podium then! And we can see Van Heerden celebrate his win once more. Though I have a suspicion that it may not be for the final time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0034.jpg

And indeed, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden is the winner of the 2018 Course de Solinardosc! Proving that a rider with a clear weakness can win as long as his team is strong enough. Three okay sprints for him followed by the stage win was enough for him to win by quite a margin.

Salleh just managed to hold on for second. A shame, but with the points he's gotten from leading already, he may have done better than Van Heerden in the grand scheme. Vanoverschelde and Guillén take third and fourth on consistency, which is insane to say of the latter rider. Keukeleire and a disappointing Manninen finish fifth and sixth. Actually, the #2-#6 all finished within four seconds of each other!

Stage winner Vanderaerden, a terrible Guarnieri, Carsi and Matthews finish off the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0035.jpg

Same thing in the points jersey standings. Well, almost then. Van Heerden wins in front of Salleh and Vanoverschelde.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0036.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Amanuel steps up the podium for his KoM win as well. Though in the end, it was a tie with fellow Eritrean rider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0037.jpg

And the U25 jersey goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Poljanec, thanks to some bonification seconds gained in the break today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/4/PCM0038.jpg

And with that we have to finalise the coverage of the 2018 Course de Solidarnosc. Quite an interesting one as a neutral viewer, if you like mass sprints of course. In the end, it definitely proves that "exentric" riders in the CT can still gain major victories. And water is still wet, too.

See you next year hopefully for another sprinting gala!
